Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

The safest hummingbird nectar recipe uses 1/4 cup plain white sugar per 1 cup water. Learn how to prepare, store, and replace it without risking mold or fermentation.
6-minute read By Animalso Team

The safest hummingbird nectar recipe is simple:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup plain refined white granulated sugar
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a 1:4 sugar-to-water ratio by volume. The nectar should be clear, with no red dye, honey, vitamins, or other additives. Just as important as the recipe is good feeder hygiene: sugar water can spoil quickly in warm weather.

Hummingbird nectar recipe

Water White sugar
1 cup 1/4 cup
2 cups 1/2 cup
4 cups 1 cup

Use ordinary refined white sugar, usually sold as granulated, table, or cane sugar. Do not substitute brown sugar, raw sugar, turbinado sugar, molasses, honey, artificial sweeteners, or flavored sugar products.

How to make hummingbird nectar

  1. Measure the ingredients. Use one part sugar to four parts water by volume.
  2. Warm or boil the water. Boiling is useful when making a larger batch for refrigeration. If you are using safe drinking water and preparing only enough for immediate use, boiling is not required.
  3. Stir in the sugar. Continue stirring until every grain has dissolved.
  4. Cool the nectar completely. Never pour hot nectar into a feeder or put it outside while it is still warm.
  5. Fill a clean feeder. Add only as much as the birds are likely to drink before the next cleaning.
  6. Refrigerate the remainder. Store unused nectar in a clean, covered container.

Boiling helps dissolve sugar and can reduce contamination before storage, but it does not make nectar safe indefinitely once it is hanging outdoors. A shaded feeder still needs regular emptying and cleaning.

How long does hummingbird nectar last?

There is no single schedule that works in every yard. Heat, direct sunlight, feeder size, and the number of birds using the feeder all affect how quickly nectar deteriorates.

Conditions When to replace the nectar
Hot weather or direct sun Daily or every other day
Temperate weather About every three days
Cool weather About twice a week may be sufficient

Replace the nectar immediately if it is cloudy, discolored, moldy, fermented, sour-smelling, or contaminated by ants, bees, or wasps. Do not wait for the feeder to become empty. Nectar can spoil while some remains in the reservoir.

Keep unused nectar refrigerated in a covered, clean container and make only enough for several days. A conservative storage limit is about one week. Older guidance has allowed longer refrigeration, but a shorter limit is easier to follow and reduces the chance of serving stale nectar.

How to clean a hummingbird feeder

Cleaning is part of feeding hummingbirds safely. Take the feeder apart completely so you can reach the reservoir, feeding ports, seams, and small cavities where mold can hide.

  1. Empty any remaining nectar.
  2. Rinse the parts with hot tap water.
  3. Scrub the reservoir and ports with a bottle brush or suitably sized cleaning brush.
  4. For additional cleaning, use a weak vinegar solution or hydrogen peroxide.
  5. Rinse every part thoroughly so no cleaner remains.
  6. Allow the feeder to drain or dry as appropriate, then refill it with fresh nectar.

Clean the feeder whenever it is emptied during hot weather and at least every two or three days in warm conditions. Clean it immediately if the nectar is cloudy, mold is visible, a sick bird has visited, insects have entered, or the nectar smells fermented or sour.

Guidance differs on dish soap: some recommendations permit hot soapy water, while others advise avoiding soap because residue can remain in the feeder. Hot water and thorough scrubbing are a reliable default; vinegar or hydrogen peroxide can provide extra cleaning power when needed. Whatever cleaner you use, rinse all components carefully.

What not to put in hummingbird nectar

  • Red food coloring: unnecessary and potentially harmful. Red feeder parts or nearby flowers are enough to attract attention.
  • Honey: diluted honey can encourage bacterial and fungal growth and mold.
  • Brown, raw, or turbinado sugar: these products contain additional compounds that are not appropriate for feeder nectar.
  • Artificial sweeteners: they provide no usable energy for hummingbirds.
  • Vitamins, electrolytes, salt, fruit juice, spices, and supplements: hummingbirds do not need these additions in sugar water.

Commercial nectar is not nutritionally necessary. Plain refined white sugar and water are sufficient for a feeder.

Can you use a stronger nectar recipe?

The 1:4 recipe is the standard formula for general use. In cold, rainy, or foggy conditions, a mixture of approximately 1/3 cup sugar per 1 cup water—a 1:3 ratio—may provide additional energy when natural water is plentiful.

This stronger mixture is not needed as a routine summer recipe. More sugar does not make old nectar safe, and increasing the concentration is never a substitute for replacing spoiled nectar. When in doubt, use the standard 1:4 recipe and maintain a more frequent cleaning schedule.

Do hummingbirds need more than sugar water?

Yes. Nectar supplies quick energy but very little protein or other nutrients. Hummingbirds also eat small insects and spiders, particularly when feeding nestlings. Flowers and insect-rich habitat are important parts of their diet.

Use a feeder as a supplement rather than a replacement for natural food. Planting nectar-producing flowers, avoiding unnecessary insecticide use, and providing suitable shelter can support hummingbirds more effectively than adding ingredients to the feeder.

Common hummingbird nectar mistakes

“The nectar must always be boiled.”

Not necessarily. Safe drinking water and immediate use do not require boiling. Boiling is helpful for dissolving sugar and preparing a refrigerated batch, but it does not prevent outdoor nectar from spoiling.

“Red dye attracts hummingbirds.”

Hummingbirds can see the red parts of many feeders and nearby flowers. The liquid itself should remain clear.

“Honey is a healthier, more natural sweetener.”

Honey is unsafe in a hummingbird feeder because diluted honey can promote fungal and bacterial growth. It is not an equivalent substitute for refined white sugar.

“The feeder can stay up until the birds finish it.”

Not safely. Nectar can ferment or develop mold before the reservoir is empty, especially in heat or direct sun. Follow a replacement schedule and inspect the liquid each time you visit the feeder.

How often should hummingbird nectar be changed?

Change it daily or every other day in hot weather, about every three days in temperate conditions, and roughly twice a week in cool weather. Replace it sooner if it becomes cloudy, moldy, discolored, fermented, or contaminated.

Can I use honey instead of white sugar?

No. Diluted honey can support dangerous fungal and bacterial growth. Use refined white granulated sugar only.

Should I add red food coloring to hummingbird nectar?

No. Red feeder parts or nearby flowers provide a visual attraction. Hummingbird nectar should be clear and free of food coloring.

How long can homemade hummingbird nectar be refrigerated?

For best reliability, use refrigerated nectar within about one week in a clean, covered container. Make smaller batches if you will not use it quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can hummingbirds live on sugar water alone?

No. Sugar water provides energy but little protein. Hummingbirds also need insects, spiders, and natural flowers, so feeders should supplement a suitable habitat rather than replace it.

The Bottom Line

Make hummingbird nectar with 1 cup water and 1/4 cup plain white sugar. Dissolve the sugar, cool the mixture, and fill a clean feeder. Refrigerate leftovers for up to about a week, replace outdoor nectar before it spoils, and clean the feeder thoroughly on a regular schedule. Skip honey, red dye, and every other additive.

These recommendations are consistent with guidance from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and the U.S. Forest Service.
