Start with origin
Look for the place linked to a dog. The Abruzzo-Maremma Sheepdog is Italian, the Aidi is native to the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, and Agassaei is linked to prehistoric Britain.
Some entries describe a wider region. Africanis is found across southern Africa, while African village dogs are indigenous to Africa.
Check the listed height
Use the height shown for a direct size comparison. The Affenpinscher is listed at 25, the Aidi at 52, the Afghan Hound at 63 and the Abruzzo-Maremma Sheepdog at 62.
No height is supplied for every entry, so do not fill in a missing figure from another breed.
Read what the dog was for
The Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog is described as a livestock guardian. The Aidi is used to protect sheep and goats.
The Affenpinscher is a small German toy dog of Pinscher type. African village dogs were not formally bred; most remain landraces.
Note unusual entries
Abyssinian sand terriers are described as hairless dogs from Africa, and it is unknown whether any examples still exist.
Adirondack Pointing Dog, Afghan mastiff, Afghan Spaniel and Agassin are listed as dogs without additional figures here.
Breed lists are arranged A to Z. They are not ranked and have no paid places.
