There is no single universally defined “pit bull” breed: the term is commonly used for several related bull-and-terrier and bully-type dogs. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a specific breed, and the five dogs below can form strong bonds with their families, but loyalty does not guarantee friendliness toward every person or animal.
When choosing a dog, assess the individual’s temperament, history, health, and needs rather than relying on a label or appearance. The American Bulldog is often grouped with bully-type dogs, but it is not included in every definition of “pit bull.”
1. American Pit Bull Terrier
The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is the breed most directly associated with the words “pit bull.” The United Kennel Club describes it as medium-sized, muscular, agile, confident, enthusiastic, and eager to please. Its breed standard says APBTs can make excellent family companions and are noted for their affection toward children.
APBTs generally form strong bonds with their people and often enjoy working, training, sports, and interactive play.

The UKC states that many APBTs exhibit some degree of dog aggression, so careful socialization, obedience training, secure fencing, and responsible supervision are important. The breed standard also says human-directed aggression is uncharacteristic and highly undesirable. Individual behavior still varies.
See the UKC American Pit Bull Terrier standard.
2. American Staffordshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier, commonly called an AmStaff, is an AKC-recognized breed descended from the same historical bull-and-terrier stock associated with pit bull-type dogs. The AKC describes the AmStaff as smart, confident, good-natured, and a loyal, trustworthy companion when responsibly bred and well socialized.
AmStaffs typically stand 17–19 inches at the shoulder. They are usually happiest with physical exercise and mental challenges, and the AKC describes them as highly trainable.
AmStaffs are often people-oriented, attentive, affectionate companions who enjoy participating in family activities. The AKC advises choosing a responsibly bred, well-socialized dog and supervising interactions with children and other animals.

3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, often called a Staffy, originated in England and is a separate breed from the American Staffordshire Terrier. The AKC describes modern Staffords as courageous, tenacious, playful, and affectionate companions with a reputation for fondness for children.
Staffords are smaller than AmStaffs, standing about 14–16 inches and weighing approximately 24–38 pounds, depending on sex. Their short coat generally needs only basic grooming.
Staffords are typically affectionate, energetic, people-focused dogs that enjoy close interaction with their families. The AKC notes that the breed’s history can affect dog-to-dog behavior; it recommends early enrichment and socialization and cautions that Staffords may not suit dog parks or homes with multiple male dogs.

4. American Bully
The American Bully is a distinct breed developed from an American Pit Bull Terrier foundation, with additional influence from breeds including the American Bulldog, English Bulldog, and Olde English Bulldogge. The UKC recognized the breed on July 15, 2013.
The UKC lists three size varieties: Pocket, Standard/Classic, and XL. It describes the breed as muscular, confident, gentle, friendly, and primarily a companion dog, with a kind and loyal temperament. American Bullies are often affectionate, family-oriented, and eager to stay close to their owners.

The UKC warns against exaggerated specimens whose mass or structure interferes with health, movement, or physical activity. A very bulky appearance does not automatically make a dog a better representative of the breed.
See the UKC American Bully standard.
5. American Bulldog
The American Bulldog is a working breed descended from the old working Bulldog brought to the American South. It was used for farm work, livestock handling, property protection, and catching feral hogs. It is often grouped with bully-type dogs, but is not included in every definition of “pit bull.”
The breed is substantially larger than the others discussed here. Typical AKC guidance gives these ranges:
| Sex | Typical height | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|
| Male | 22–25 inches | 75–100 pounds |
| Female | 20–23 inches | 60–80 pounds |
The UKC describes the American Bulldog as a loyal family companion, and the AKC characterizes it as loyal and self-confident. Its working background can make it devoted, athletic, and alert. American Bulldogs need regular exercise, early training, and continued mental stimulation; the AKC warns that leaving one alone in a yard without enough activity can contribute to behavior problems caused by pent-up energy.
See the AKC American Bulldog profile.
Are Pit Bull-Type Dogs Naturally Loyal?
Breed standards and kennel-club profiles describe many dogs in this group as affectionate, people-oriented, eager to please, or loyal. But loyalty does not guarantee friendly behavior toward every person or dog. Temperament is influenced by genetics, early development, socialization, training, health, and individual experience.

Common Claims That Are Wrong or Misleading
“Pit bull” is a single standardized breed
It is usually an umbrella term, although American Pit Bull Terrier is also the formal name of a specific breed recognized by registries such as the UKC.
Every blocky-headed, short-haired dog is a pit bull
Visual identification is unreliable, particularly for mixed-breed dogs. Shelter and veterinary professionals can misidentify dogs based on appearance alone.
A loyal dog will automatically protect its owner
Not necessarily. The UKC describes APBTs as generally very friendly even with strangers and not ideal guard dogs. Attachment to a family and protective behavior are different traits.
A breed label predicts an individual dog’s entire personality
Breed tendencies can help you plan, but they do not replace evaluating the individual dog’s behavior, history, health, and responses to people and animals.

How to Choose One for Your Household
- Check local rules and housing policies. Some municipalities, insurers, landlords, or homeowners’ associations impose restrictions based on breed labels or appearance.
- Match size and exercise needs to your routine. American Bulldogs are substantially larger than Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and dogs’ activity needs differ.
- Ask about behavior around other animals. Do not assume a dog that is affectionate with people will automatically enjoy dog parks, cats, or living with another dog.
- Evaluate the individual dog. Consider its history, health, behavior, and response to people and animals.
- Plan for humane training and management. Use positive socialization, reward-based training, and responsible supervision.
FAQ
What is the most loyal pit bull breed?
There is no objective “most loyal” choice. All five dogs discussed here can form strong bonds with their families; the individual dog’s temperament, breeding, socialization, and history matter more than a simple ranking.
Are pit bull-type dogs good family pets?
They can be affectionate family companions when responsibly bred or carefully evaluated, socialized appropriately, trained humanely, and managed safely. Supervise children around dogs and assess compatibility with other animals rather than assuming it.
Is an American Bulldog a pit bull?
It depends on the definition. American Bulldogs are often grouped with bully-type dogs, but are not included in every use of “pit bull.” They have a distinct working-breed history and are substantially larger than the other dogs covered here.
Can you identify a pit bull breed by appearance?
Not reliably. Visual identification is especially uncertain for mixed-breed dogs. A dog’s behavior, history, health, and responsible evaluation are more useful when choosing a companion.

The American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, and American Bulldog can all be loyal companions. Choose based on the individual dog’s temperament, size, exercise needs, behavior around other animals, and fit with your household—not the label alone.
