Buying pet medication online can save money and make recurring prescriptions easier to manage—but only if the pharmacy carries the exact product your veterinarian prescribed and verifies the prescription before shipping. The right choice depends on what you need: a standard FDA-approved drug, a compounded liquid or chew, a human generic, local pickup, or automatic refills.
These 10 pharmacies and medication services stand out for different reasons. Delivery times, state availability, prescription rules, prices, and product selection can change, so confirm the final cost and estimated arrival date at checkout. Research for this guide was checked on August 8, 2026.

1. Chewy Pharmacy: best overall for convenience
Chewy is a practical first stop for many routine prescriptions because it combines medications with veterinary diets, over-the-counter products, supplements, and pet supplies. Its pharmacy is accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and certified by LegitScript.
To order, search for the medication, add it to your cart, and enter your pet’s and veterinarian’s information during checkout. You can select “Chewy Contacts Vet” or mail an original prescription. Chewy does not accept prescription photos or photocopies. Gabapentin prescriptions must be mailed to a separate Chewy Pharmacy address in Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Chewy says veterinary approval can take up to three business days. Once the prescription is received, pharmacy processing generally takes 24–48 hours, followed by delivery in approximately three to five business days. Prescription drugs generally cannot be returned, although incorrect or damaged shipments may be refunded or replaced case by case.
2. PetMeds: best-established dedicated pet pharmacy
PetMeds is a long-running online source for prescription and nonprescription medications for dogs, cats, and other animals. It also operates the 1-800-PetMeds telephone service; the consumer-facing online pharmacy is PetMeds.com.
Add the medication to the cart, provide the pet and veterinarian details, and allow the pharmacy to request approval from the clinic. The order cannot ship until the veterinarian authorizes it. The company says prescriptions may be processed or filled at its Delray Beach, Florida, or Lynbrook, New York, pharmacies, which it states are licensed in every state where it ships medication.
On the current PetMeds-powered pharmacy platform, standard delivery is listed as two to five business days after processing. That estimate does not include time spent waiting for the veterinary clinic to respond.

3. PetCareRx: best for a broad pharmacy and supply selection
PetCareRx sells prescription and OTC medications alongside food, supplements, and everyday pet supplies. The company says it is licensed in all 50 states, employs licensed pharmacists, dispenses FDA- and EPA-approved medications, and operates as a verified .pharmacy site.
During checkout, choose the option for PetCareRx to contact your veterinarian, or mail the original signed prescription. The pharmacy holds an order for seven days while waiting for authorization. After approval, delivery generally takes three to seven business days.
Pay close attention to the exact product listing. Similar names can hide meaningful differences in strength, formulation, quantity, or species. Compare the label with the veterinarian’s prescription before placing the order.
4. Walmart Pet Pharmacy: best for Walmart shoppers and prescription management
Walmart is convenient if you already use Walmart.com and want pet prescriptions or veterinary diet food in the same account. From the website, go to Services → Pharmacy → Pet Pharmacy. You can also use Account → Pets → Pet Pharmacy.

Add the product, enter the pet and veterinarian information, and submit the order. Walmart contacts the clinic for verification. If the veterinarian does not respond within two business days, Walmart says it contacts the clinic again; verification can take up to five business days.
Walmart’s prescription workflow has a few unusual price and substitution rules. The veterinarian may change the item, strength, dosage, or weight range. If the item remains the same and the price rises by 10% or less, Walmart may approve the change automatically. A larger increase or a changed item requires your approval; declining or missing the response deadline cancels the order.
For an existing refill, use My Account → Pets → Prescriptions → Refill now. If no refills remain, choose Reorder Now to begin a new veterinarian-approval request.
5. Costco Pharmacy: best for comparing pet prescriptions with human-pharmacy prices
Costco can be worth checking when your veterinarian says a pet’s prescription may be filled with an appropriate human generic. Start at Costco.com/pet-medications for pricing, then bring the prescription to a local Costco pharmacy. Costco also offers prescription delivery, and same-day Instacart delivery is available in some areas.
The veterinarian must decide whether the human medication, strength, dosage, and formulation are suitable. Do not substitute a human product yourself simply because the active ingredient appears to match.
Costco is not primarily a veterinary pharmacy, so its regular pharmacy may not carry veterinary-only preventives, compounded products, flavored formulations, or other animal-specific medications. Availability also varies by location.
6. Petco Pharmacy: best for Petco customers and Autoship
Petco’s online pharmacy fulfills prescriptions through Vetsource. Its catalog includes flea and tick products, dewormers, allergy medications, pain medicines, and other veterinary prescriptions.
To start, sign in and open My Prescriptions under My Profile. If the medication is not already linked, find it in Petco Pharmacy and add it to the cart. Enter your pet’s and veterinarian’s details at checkout; Vetsource then contacts the clinic.

Petco says to allow five to 10 days for verification, processing, and delivery. For refills, use My Pet Prescriptions. A paper prescription must be the original document, not a photo or scan. Place the order first and include the order number with the mailed prescription.
Prescription products cannot be returned in stores or by mail. Petco says the first qualifying prescription Autoship order receives 35% off, capped at $20, with exclusions.
7. Allivet: best for Autoship discounts and compounding
Allivet carries prescription and OTC products for dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. It lists state pharmacy licenses and says it can ship prescription medications to all 50 states, subject to applicable rules.
Add the medication to the cart and enter the pet and veterinarian information. Allivet can contact the clinic, or the veterinarian can call, email, or fax the prescription. An existing prescription may also be mailed.

8. VetRxDirect: best for chronic medications and veterinarian-centered service
VetRxDirect focuses on veterinary medicines, supplements, and compounded products, including commonly used heart, thyroid, eye, allergy, pain, and behavioral medications. It says it is verified by the NABP and licensed to distribute prescription products in every U.S. state except Alaska.
You can place an order online or by phone, then print VetRxDirect’s authorization form and give it to the veterinarian. The clinic must fax the prescription directly to the pharmacy; VetRxDirect says it cannot accept a prescription faxed by the pet owner.

Shipping thresholds shown on the site have changed over time, so check the product page or checkout rather than relying on an older free-shipping article. If you live in Alaska, choose another pharmacy for prescription items.
9. GoodRx for Pets: best for comparing prices and human-pharmacy alternatives
GoodRx is a price-comparison and coupon service, not a pharmacy that fills every prescription itself. Its pet service supports local-pharmacy savings for many human medications prescribed for pets and home delivery for selected pet-specific and human medications.
For home delivery, search for the medication on GoodRx.com, select GoodRx for Pets in the Home Delivery section, confirm the supply and quantity, add it to the cart, and sign in or create a GoodRx for Pets account. You will then enter shipping, payment, and veterinarian information.
GoodRx says OTC products generally ship within 24 business hours. Prescription products generally ship within 24–72 business hours after veterinary approval, with delivery typically taking another three to five business days.
A standard GoodRx coupon does not work for every veterinary drug. It generally applies to human medications prescribed for a pet, not animal-only medications that are not FDA-approved for humans.

Wedgewood specializes in compounded veterinary medications and alternative dosage forms, such as flavored chewables, small tablets, oral liquids, and transdermal preparations. It reports more than 46,000 medication options for companion animals, horses, and other species.
Use Wedgewood.pet to manage the animal’s prescription. The veterinarian must submit a valid prescription before Wedgewood prepares the medication. Processing time depends on the formulation and appears in the Wedgewood.pet account. Standard transit is generally three to five business days after processing; faster shipping reduces transit time but not preparation time.
If a product is marked Temporarily Unavailable, Wedgewood says you may still order by phone, but shipment will wait until the ingredients or product are replenished.

Compounded veterinary medications are not the same as FDA-approved finished animal drugs. The FDA does not review animal drugs compounded from bulk drug substances for safety and effectiveness for their intended uses. Your veterinarian should decide whether compounding is appropriate.
How to choose the right online pet pharmacy
- Identify the type of prescription. Check whether it is a standard commercial drug, a veterinary diet, a compounded formulation, or a human generic prescribed for your pet.
- Compare the exact product. Match the medication name, active ingredient, strength, dosage form, quantity, species, and weight range. A lower price for a different concentration is not a real saving.
- Include approval time. Delivery estimates usually begin after the pharmacy receives veterinary authorization. Ask the clinic to watch for the request, especially when medication is running low.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include shipping, cold-pack fees, Autoship terms, membership requirements, and the cost of a required minimum order.
- Choose a suitable refill system. Autoship can help with long-term medication, but pause or cancel it when the veterinarian changes the dose or stops treatment.
Safety checks before ordering
Use a pharmacy that requires veterinarian authorization for prescription products and publishes a physical U.S. address, telephone number, licensed-pharmacist information, and state licensing details. Be cautious of sites selling prescription medication without asking for a prescription or offering a price that seems implausibly low.
When the package arrives, check the pet’s name, medication, strength, quantity, expiration date, lot information, and storage condition. Do not give your pet a human medication—or change the dose—without specific veterinary instructions. Prescription products often cannot be returned because a pharmacy cannot safely restock medication once it has left the facility.
Online shipping is not appropriate for an emergency. If your pet needs medication today, ask the veterinarian or an emergency clinic about immediate dispensing or local pickup while an online order is processed.

Do I need a prescription to buy pet medication online?
Yes, for prescription products. A reputable pharmacy verifies a valid prescription or authorization from a licensed veterinarian before shipping. Over-the-counter products do not require a prescription, but they should still be appropriate for your pet.
How long does online pet medication take to arrive?
It varies. Veterinary approval may take two to seven business days, and shipping often takes another two to five business days. Compounded medication can require additional preparation time. Check the pharmacy’s estimate after approval, not just the product-page shipping promise.
Can I use a GoodRx coupon for my pet’s medication?
Usually only when the prescription is for a human medication that a pharmacy can legally fill for your pet. Traditional GoodRx coupons generally do not apply to animal-only medications that are not FDA-approved for humans.
Is compounded pet medication safe?
