For most owners seeking long-lasting protection, Seresto is the strongest all-around pick; PetArmor Extend is a similar eight-month alternative, while Advantage suits owners seeking a four-month option and Hartz UltraGuard Pro adds flea-egg claims and reflectivity. The right choice depends on your dog’s age and size, water exposure, target pests, fit, and medical history. These are editorial picks based on labeled claims and practical considerations, not an independent head-to-head trial.
A flea collar can be convenient, but the best choice depends on more than the number of months printed on the box. Water exposure, minimum age, neck size, target pests, fit, and your dog’s medical history all matter.

#1 Best Overall
- Vet-recommended, premium flea and tick protection for dogs and puppies without the price tag
- Long-lasting flea and tick collar kills and repels fleas for 8 continuous months
- Seresto is the #1 veterinarian recommended flea and tick collar* *Elanco Animal Health, data on file
- Starts working after 24 hours to kill and repel fleas through contact so pests don't have to bite your dog to die
- Hassle-free, non-greasy, easy-to-use flea and tick protection
Seresto uses imidacloprid and flumethrin. Elanco says it kills and repels fleas and ticks through contact, so the pest does not need to bite the dog for the collar’s active ingredients to work. Its labeled duration is up to eight continuous months.
That eight-month figure assumes ordinary use, not repeated soaking. The collar is water-resistant, but Elanco says dogs that swim or are bathed more than once a month may receive approximately five months of flea control and seven months of tick control. A dog that spends every weekend in the water should not be evaluated as though it will receive the full headline duration.
Seresto is the strongest all-around pick here for owners who prioritize long duration and do not need a collar aimed specifically at flea eggs or larvae. It is also the product on this list that deserves the most careful safety discussion. The EPA’s current review describes reports of adverse events, including itching and, less commonly, neurological signs such as convulsions or ataxia. EPA received 1,400 death reports associated with Seresto incidents from 2016 through 2020, but those are reports—not a finding that the collars caused 1,400 deaths. EPA said many reports lacked enough information to determine causation or involved other medical factors.
EPA allowed Seresto to remain registered while requiring additional mitigation, including more detailed warnings, removal instructions, annual incident and sales reporting, and separate dog and cat registrations. Do not use a dog collar on a cat unless the specific label expressly permits it.

- Active ingredients: imidacloprid and flumethrin
- Coverage: fleas and ticks; kills and repels through contact
- Duration: up to 8 months under labeled conditions
- Water caveat: frequent bathing or swimming may reduce duration
- Best reason to buy: the longest labeled replacement interval among these mainstream options
2. PetArmor Extend Flea & Tick Collar
Best for: Owners seeking an eight-month imidacloprid-and-flumethrin collar, potentially at a lower purchase price than Seresto.
PetArmor Extend uses the same two active ingredients as Seresto and is labeled to provide up to eight months of protection against fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. It comes in two dog versions: one for dogs up to 18 pounds and one for dogs over 18 pounds. The manufacturer says puppies must be at least seven weeks old.
The water limitation is significant. PetArmor says frequent bathing or immersion can reduce flea protection to approximately five months and tick protection to approximately seven months. If your dog swims often, compare the realistic interval—not simply “eight months”—with other prevention options.

PetArmor’s directions say to remove ticks already attached when applying the collar. Prevention of tick reinfestation starts after 48 hours; the instructions say new ticks are killed after six hours following 24 hours of collar application. Do not leave an attached tick in place and wait for the collar to handle it.

3. Advantage Collar for Dogs
Best for: Dogs that need a four-month collar with flea life-cycle and mosquito claims, and for owners who prefer a shorter replacement cycle.
The current EPA label, stamped March 26, 2026, lists deltamethrin at 4% and pyriproxyfen at 1%. The collar provides four months of continuous protection and is labeled for dogs and puppies at least 12 weeks old.
Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator, which gives this collar a different angle from products focused mainly on killing or repelling adult fleas. The label includes flea-egg and flea-life-cycle claims, while the product also carries a mosquito claim that excludes California. That exclusion matters if you live there; do not generalize the mosquito claim nationwide.
Advantage is not the longest-lasting choice, and it has a stricter minimum age than PetArmor Extend. It may nevertheless suit owners who would rather replace a collar every four months, especially when flea-egg control is a priority. As with any pesticide collar, use only the dog size and age category on the current label.
- Active ingredients: 4% deltamethrin and 1% pyriproxyfen
- Duration: 4 months
- Minimum age: 12 weeks
- Extra claim: mosquito protection, except in California
- Best reason to buy: shorter-term protection with flea life-cycle coverage
- Critical warning: never use this dog collar on a cat
4. Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs and Puppies
Best for: Budget-minded owners who want a reflective feature as well as flea and tick claims.
Rank #3
- Vet-recommended, premium flea and tick protection for dogs and puppies without the price tag
- Long-lasting flea and tick collar kills and repels fleas for 8 continuous months
- Seresto is veterinarian recommended flea and tick collar
- Starts working within 24 hours to kill and repel fleas by contact so pests don’t have to bite your dog to die
- Hassle-free, non-greasy, easy-to-use flea and tick protection
Hartz UltraGuard Pro is labeled to kill and repel fleas and ticks, kill flea eggs and larvae, and prevent flea eggs from hatching. Hartz says it lasts seven months, is water-resistant, and can remain on during rain and swimming. Its directions say to replace it every seven months and not to replace it earlier than every five months.
The collar fits dogs with necks up to 26 inches and is labeled for dogs and puppies at least 12 weeks old. A reflective strip is rated by Hartz to reflect direct light up to 450 feet. That is a visibility aid, not a replacement for a properly fitted identification tag, microchip, leash, or supervision after dark.

Leave two to three inches for adjustment and growth before cutting off excess material. The collar should be loose enough to avoid rubbing but not so loose that the dog can chew it or catch a paw or jaw in it. Hartz also generally advises using only one flea-and-tick product at a time unless a veterinarian tells you otherwise.
UltraGuard Pro is the practical budget-and-visibility pick, but it is not automatically the right option for every dog. Puppies under 12 weeks, dogs with a history of reactions to flea products, and dogs that are sick, elderly, medicated, pregnant, or nursing should be discussed with a veterinarian before use.
- Coverage: fleas, ticks, flea eggs, and flea larvae
- Duration: 7 months

- Neck size: up to 26 inches
- Extra feature: reflective strip rated to reflect direct light up to 450 feet
- Best reason to buy: combines immature-flea claims and visibility at a budget-oriented position
How to choose the right flea collar
Start with the label, not the brand name
Match the collar to your dog’s species, age, weight or neck size, and the pests you need to control. A product intended for a large dog can expose a small dog to too much pesticide. Dog products should not be transferred to cats; some ingredients used in dog products are more toxic to cats.
Adjust the duration for your dog’s water habits
“Water-resistant” does not mean that repeated swimming has no effect on performance. For Seresto and PetArmor Extend, frequent water exposure can reduce the labeled flea duration from eight months to about five. Hartz gives a seven-month replacement interval and says the collar may remain on during swimming, but follow its specific directions rather than applying the Seresto timetable to it.

Know what “flea control” means
A collar may kill adult fleas, repel ticks, affect flea eggs or larvae, prevent reinfestation, or combine several of these functions. These are not interchangeable claims. A collar that kills adult fleas does not necessarily eliminate every immature flea stage already present in your home.

Inspect the dog even with a collar
Check for ticks after outdoor exposure, particularly around the ears, eyelids, collar area, armpits, groin, and between the toes. Remove attached ticks promptly using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. No collar should be described as preventing every tick bite.
How to put on a flea collar safely
- Read the package directions and confirm the collar is labeled for your dog’s species, age, weight, and size.
- Remove the collar from its packaging as directed. Do not let your dog chew the unused collar.
- Place it around the neck and adjust it so it is snug without pressing into the skin. You should be able to fit the number of fingers specified by the label.
- Leave the required adjustment allowance, then trim the excess if the instructions call for trimming.
- Do not attach a leash to a flea collar.
- Wash your hands after handling it.
- Check the skin under the collar during the first days and periodically afterward. Look for redness, hair loss, swelling, or persistent itching.
What to do if your dog reacts
Possible reactions to flea and tick products include skin irritation or redness, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, a depressed appearance, and seizures. If you suspect a reaction to a collar, EPA advises removing it immediately, bathing the dog with mild soap and plenty of water, and contacting a veterinarian. You can also contact the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378.
Seek urgent veterinary care for seizures, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, collapse, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not put the collar back on simply to test whether the symptoms return.
Why fleas may remain after fitting a collar
Seeing fleas during the first days or weeks does not automatically prove that a collar failed. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae can remain in carpets, bedding, furniture, cracks, and shaded outdoor areas. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that complete control of an established infestation commonly takes two to three months.
Vacuum frequently, wash pet bedding, and address humid, shaded outdoor areas. Treat every household pet with a veterinarian-approved product appropriate for its species. If fleas continue, possible explanations include an incorrect size, poor fit, missed treatments, bathing or swimming, reduced kill speed, underdosing of another product, or insecticide resistance.

Purchase from a reputable retailer and inspect the packaging before opening it. EPA warns that counterfeit pet pesticides may have missing EPA registration numbers, missing English directions, foreign labels covered by stickers, incorrect animal packaging, missing precautionary statements, or packaging that is not child-resistant.
Do not use a product if its box, collar, and directions do not match. When available, verify the EPA registration information through the Pesticide Product Label System. A familiar product name alone is not enough because similar or alternate brand names can be associated with the same registration.

Can you combine a flea collar with another treatment?
Do not automatically combine a collar with a topical flea treatment, oral flea medication, or another pesticide. Hartz warns that combining flea-and-tick products can cause interactions, illness, or irritation. Check both labels and ask your veterinarian—particularly for a sick, debilitated, elderly, medicated, pregnant, or nursing dog, or one with a seizure history.
Flea collars also do not replace veterinarian-directed heartworm prevention. A mosquito claim on a collar is not a heartworm treatment.
FAQ
Which flea collar lasts the longest for dogs?
Seresto and PetArmor Extend are both labeled for up to eight months under normal conditions. Frequent bathing or swimming can reduce their flea protection to about five months, so active swimmers may get less than the headline duration.
Are flea collars safe for puppies?
It depends on the product. PetArmor Extend is listed by its manufacturer for puppies at least seven weeks old, while Advantage and Hartz UltraGuard Pro require dogs and puppies to be at least 12 weeks old. Always follow the current label and ask your veterinarian about young, sick, medicated, pregnant, or nursing dogs.
Can my dog wear a flea collar while swimming?
The products in this review have water-related instructions, but water exposure can shorten protection. Seresto and PetArmor Extend specifically warn that frequent bathing or immersion reduces duration. Hartz says UltraGuard Pro is water-resistant and may remain on during swimming. Follow the instructions for the exact collar.
What should I do if my dog has a reaction to a flea collar?
Remove the collar immediately, bathe the dog with mild soap and plenty of water, and contact your veterinarian. EPA lists redness, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, depression, and seizures among possible adverse effects. Severe or neurological symptoms require urgent veterinary attention.
Can a flea collar eliminate fleas from my house?
Not by itself. Eggs, larvae, and pupae can remain in the environment, and an established infestation commonly takes two to three months to control, according to Merck Veterinary Manual. Vacuum frequently, wash pet bedding, and treat all household pets with species-appropriate products.
The Bottom Line
Seresto is the best overall long-duration choice when its water limitations and safety precautions fit your dog. PetArmor Extend is the closest alternative for an eight-month collar, with separate size versions and similar water caveats. Choose Advantage for a four-month option with flea life-cycle and region-limited mosquito claims, or Hartz UltraGuard Pro for a budget-oriented collar that adds flea-egg and larval claims plus reflectivity.
Whichever you choose, use the exact labeled size, inspect your dog for ticks, avoid unapproved product combinations, and stop using the collar if an adverse reaction occurs.
