6 Best Pooper Scoopers: Reviews and Buying Guide

Compare six pooper scoopers for lawns, walks, soft waste, and larger yard cleanups. Consumer Reports tested three of the products; the remaining picks are based on specifications and specialist coverage.

For routine lawn cleanup, the Dogit Jaws for Grass is a straightforward long-handled option; for walks, consider the compact DogBuddy Portable Dog Poop Scoop. A bag-based catcher such as the GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go can help with soft waste, while a rake-and-bin or rake-and-pan tool is better suited to larger yard cleanups.

These recommendations are not the result of a single hands-on test of all six products. Consumer Reports says it tested the GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go, Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake, and DogBuddy Portable Dog Poop Scoop. The other picks are based on product specifications and specialist coverage, not a shared test protocol.

The six best pooper scoopers

1. Dogit Jaws for Grass: Best for lawns

The Dogit Jaws for Grass uses spring-triggered jaws on a 25-inch handle, allowing you to pick up waste without routinely crouching or bending. Its teeth are designed to be gentler on grass than a rigid shovel edge, making it a sensible choice for ordinary lawn maintenance.

The trigger is intended to be comfortable during repeated pickups, and the jaws can grasp waste without requiring a separate rake. This is the simplest style for a dog that uses one part of the yard consistently.

#1 Best Overall
TOOGE Pooper Scooper, Dog Pooper Scooper Long Handle Stainless Metal Tray and Rake for Medium Small Dogs Heavy Duty Pet Supplies to Use for Grass, Dirt or Gravel
  • 【No More Bending】Extends up to 38" in tray and 36" in rake, TOOGE metal pooper scooper offers a comfortable and extended reach to clean dog poop without bending over.
  • 【Easy to Use】Each tray and rake is connected with 3 tubes. No extra tool is needed to assemble this heavy duty pooper scooper!
  • 【Strong & Sturdy】Pooper scooper for medium small dogs is made of stainless metal to ensure its sturdiness. Upgraded clip-on structure is more long-lasting because the tray will never dislocation or falling apart.
  • 【Easy to Clean & Store】The metal and aluminum build makes this pooper scooper RUST-PROOF and easy to clean. 2-in-1 snaps together and integrated hanging hook make it convenient to store.
  • 【Multipurpose Use】This dog pooper scooper is perfect for picking up pet waste, leaves and garden debris. Keep your garden clean by scooping on grass, dirt, gravel.

The limitation is cleanup. The jaws still contact the waste, and dried material can crust onto the teeth and moving parts. “Grass-friendly” describes the design goal; it does not guarantee that the tool will never disturb delicate turf, wet soil, or every type of lawn.

Choose it if: you want a straightforward, long-handled tool for routine lawn pickups.

Skip it if: you need a sealed, bag-based system or a compact tool for walks.

2. Four Paws Allen’s Spring Action Scooper for Grass: Best value

This Four Paws model uses spring-action jaws with jagged teeth and is positioned as a lower-cost lawn option. The wide handle and rinseable design are useful for regular yard cleanup, while the teeth are intended to reduce damage to grass compared with a hard scoop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no bag attachment, so the jaws need cleaning after use. The handle also lacks grip padding. Dogster reports that some users found the spring action flimsy or difficult, which is worth considering if hand strength or repeated squeezing is a concern.

Pay attention to the word Grass in the product name. Four Paws sells separate versions for grass and hard surfaces. The hard-surface model is described by the manufacturer as a durable plastic, one-handed scooper for concrete and hard flooring; those specifications should not be attributed to the grass version.

Choose it if: you want an inexpensive lawn scooper and do not mind rinsing the jaws.

Skip it if: you need a padded handle, dependable bag containment, or a model for mixed hard surfaces.

3. GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go: Best for no-touch pickup and soft waste

The Catch-N-Go attaches a disposable bag to the tool so the bag itself becomes the scooping surface. That keeps the main scoop from directly touching the waste and gives the bag some ability to conform to the ground, which is particularly helpful with soft or loose stool.

The product includes a bag dispenser and 12 starter bags. GoGo Stik says its large Dootie Bags fit best, although most standard plastic bags with or without handles can also be used. In practice, the exact bag matters: a loose fit, weak plastic, or poorly secured mounting point can turn a no-touch pickup into a spill.

The manufacturer’s product description lists an adjustable telescoping handle from 23 to 33 inches. Its FAQ refers to a 37-inch handle, so verify the exact Catch-N-Go model and listing before relying on the maximum length.

Consumer Reports identifies this as one of the three products it tested in its current comparison. The manufacturer-listed price was $30.49 when checked; prices can change.

Choose it if: you prioritize avoiding direct contact and often deal with soft waste.

Skip it if: you want to use any bag interchangeably without checking fit and strength.

4. Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake: Best for large yard cleanups

The Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake is a yard tool rather than a walking accessory. Its handle extends to 32 inches, and the 9-inch-long swivel bin lets you collect multiple deposits before emptying. The bin can swivel for disposal, reducing the need to turn or tip the whole tool.

Petmate lists the assembled product at 9 × 7 × 32 inches and 1.43 pounds. The set includes two heavy-duty bags with easy-tie handles and baking-soda odor control. The manufacturer says it can be used on grass, gravel, concrete, dirt, pavement, and other surfaces.

ienjoyed 28" Large Pooper Scooper for Dogs, Heavy Duty Poop Scooper for Large Medium & Small Dog, Pet Dog Pooper Scooper for Grass & Gravel Pick Up
  • 【Heavy Duty ABS Frame】Made of sturdy unbreakable yet lightweight plastic, keeps your device everlasting using for long time!
  • 【Less Bending】28-inch length large Pooper Scooper perfectly fits for your height, and keeps your face, hands, and nose away from messes and odors. More helpful than a 24-inch pick-up.
  • 【Easy to Use and Clean】One-handed operation, easy-pull handle and two durable spring guarantee your effortless scooping action. Non-stick surface is easy rinse after use.
  • 【It Snaps Tightly】The pooper scooper has teeth to assist with the pickup and the teeth are slightly open for any smaller debris to fall out (rocks, leaves etc.)
  • 【For All Surface】Picks up from all Surfaces -Easy to Pick up waste from all surfaces - Grass, gravel, concrete, dirt water, etc.Not only great for poo, but other messes and yard work, such as pine cones and leaves.

That broad surface range makes it more versatile around a property than a grass-specific jaw tool, but the rake still needs cleaning. The system also depends on replacement bags, and its size makes it awkward to carry during a walk.

Consumer Reports says it tested this model. Petmate’s listed price was $23.99 when checked; older retailer pages may show different packaging, measurements, or prices.

Choose it if: you clean a large yard and want a bin that can hold several pickups.

Skip it if: you need something that clips to a leash or fits in a walking bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. DogBuddy Portable Dog Poop Scoop: Best for walks

The DogBuddy is built around portability. It is a compact, bag-based scoop with a leash clip and integrated bag storage, so it can remain with the dog’s walking equipment instead of being left in the yard.

Its main advantage is convenience: the waste stays away from your hands, and the tool is more practical on a pavement or trail walk than a rake-and-bin system. Consumer Reports lists it among the three products it tested.

Compact size is also the compromise. A portable scoop has less capacity than a yard bin, and the scoop opening and bag fit may be limiting for very large dogs, multiple deposits, or unusually soft waste. Retail listings can also differ in color, size naming, and included bag count. Confirm the exact listing before buying.

Chewy listed one version at $16.99 and Walmart listed a version at $13.99 when checked. Those are retailer snapshots, not a fixed manufacturer price.

6. Precision Pet Little Stinker Poop Scoop with Rake: Heavy-duty product-specification pick

The Little Stinker is the substantial choice in this group based on its specifications. Its large version combines a zinc-plated steel rake and scoop with aluminum handles, a deep pan, and a telescoping handle that extends from 29 to 44 inches. Petmate lists the large model at 3.42 pounds; the small version weighs 2.2 pounds.

The deep pan is intended for larger quantities of waste, while the long handle can reduce bending for many users. Petmate says the tool can be wiped down or hosed off, and built-in hanger hooks provide a storage point. No assembly is required.

Its weight and bulk are the tradeoffs. Metal components require more storage space and more attention during cleaning than a disposable-bag catcher. This is a product-specification-based pick, not one of the three products Consumer Reports identifies as tested.

Petmate listed the large version at $89.99 when checked.

Choose it if: you need a long-handled, deep-pan tool for repeated or heavy yard cleanup.

Skip it if: you want something light enough to carry on a walk.

How to choose a pooper scooper

Match the tool to the surface

  • Grass: spring jaws with grass-oriented teeth are usually the most natural fit.
  • Concrete and pavement: a rigid scoop or hard-surface model can make scraping up residue easier.
  • Mixed yards: a rake-and-bin system offers more surface flexibility, but takes up more space.
  • Gravel: check whether the scoop can separate waste without collecting a large amount of stones.

Decide whether you want a bag-based design

A bag-mounted catcher can reduce direct contact and simplify disposal, but it does not make every part of the tool self-cleaning. Mounting points, seams, jaws, and scoop edges can still retain residue. Bag-based tools also depend on bags that fit securely and do not tear.

Consider reach and hand effort

A longer handle can reduce bending, but it does not eliminate it for every user. Your height, the pickup angle, and whether the waste is in a corner or against a fence all matter. Trigger tools also vary in required hand force; a theoretically convenient design may be uncomfortable after dozens of pickups.

Separate yard tools from walking tools

For walks, look for a small footprint, leash attachment, and integrated or easily carried bags. For a yard, capacity and cleaning speed matter more than portability. A 32-inch rake-and-bin system may be efficient at home and thoroughly impractical on a trail.

How these scoopers should be tested

A genuine “tested and reviewed” comparison should put every model through the same conditions rather than treating manufacturer claims as performance results. A useful protocol would include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use short grass, long grass, gravel, concrete, and damp ground.
  2. Test firm, soft, partially dried, and loose waste substitutes.
  3. Record attempts per pickup, spills, residue left behind, and time required.
  4. Assess bending, trigger force, grip comfort, handle length, and one-handed use.
  5. For bag-based models, check attachment security, leaks, tears, and whether hand contact is required.
  6. Time rinsing and inspect jaws, rakes, seams, and moving parts for trapped material.
  7. Measure storage footprint, leash suitability, handle flex, trigger reliability, and loose joints.
  8. Use small, medium, and large waste loads rather than inferring capacity from marketing language.
  9. Record the exact model, retailer, date, and price because listings and prices change.

What not to assume

  • “Every scooper works for walks.” Rake-and-bin and rake-and-pan systems are primarily yard tools.
  • “Bag attachment means zero cleaning.” Mounts and edges may still become soiled.
  • “Grass-friendly means all-surface friendly.” Grass and hard-surface versions can be separate products.
  • “A long handle eliminates bending.” User height and pickup position still affect posture.
  • “All six were tested by Consumer Reports.” Consumer Reports identifies only the GoGo Stik, Arm & Hammer, and DogBuddy as tested in its current comparison.

FAQ

Which pooper scooper is best for a yard?

For routine lawn pickups, the Dogit Jaws for Grass is the simplest fit. For clearing many deposits, the Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake offers a swivel bin, while the Precision Pet Little Stinker is a heavier-duty product-specification option.

Which pooper scooper is best for walks?

The DogBuddy Portable Dog Poop Scoop is the most walk-oriented choice because it is compact, has a leash clip, and includes integrated bag storage. The GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go is another option if no-touch pickup and soft-waste handling matter more than compactness.

Do pooper scoopers work with soft dog poop?

Bag-based designs such as the GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go can work well with soft waste because the bag conforms to the ground. Performance still depends on bag strength, fit, and how securely the bag is attached.

Do grass pooper scoopers work on concrete?

Not necessarily. Grass-oriented jaws are designed around minimizing lawn disturbance, and manufacturers may sell separate hard-surface models. Check the exact product version before using it on concrete or pavement.

The Bottom Line

For most lawn owners, the Dogit Jaws for Grass is the simplest everyday pick, while the Four Paws Allen’s Spring Action Scooper for Grass is the budget alternative. Choose the GoGo Stik Catch-N-Go for bag-based, no-touch pickup; the DogBuddy for walks; the Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake for larger yard jobs; and the Precision Pet Little Stinker if its long reach and deep pan suit your cleanup needs.
