South Africa’s Rhisotope Project implants a low-activity radioactive source inside some rhino horns to help radiation monitors detect them if they are trafficked. The goal is also to deter poaching or buying, but the available research does not show that the project has reduced poaching or increased real-world seizures.
A 2026 study reported no adverse biological effects among 16 measured implanted white rhinos six months after implantation, with recorded dose rates below deterministic thresholds. That is a promising, limited safety result—not proof of long-term safety for every rhino or evidence of conservation impact.
What the Rhisotope Project does
The Rhisotope Project combines nuclear science and conservation. Its stated approach is to place detectable radioisotope material in a rhino horn so that radiation monitors at transport hubs or border crossings may detect it if trafficked. Public knowledge of the treatment is also intended to make the horn seem hazardous or difficult to sell, potentially discouraging poaching or purchase. These are the project’s goals, not established outcomes. (Rhisotope Project)
The 2026 peer-reviewed study describes drilling a small opening in the horn, inserting a cobalt-60 pellet, and cementing the source in place. The study reports an opening about 4 mm wide. This is not a coating, and it does not make the entire animal radioactive. (Scientific Reports, 2026)

| Question | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| What is put in the horn? | A sealed, low-activity radioactive source; the study describes a cobalt-60 pellet. |
| Why do it? | To make a trafficked treated horn detectable by suitable radiation monitors and potentially deter poaching or purchase. |
| Does it make the whole rhino radioactive? | No. The source is implanted in the horn; the intervention is not whole-body contamination. |
| Has it been shown to stop poaching? | No measured reduction in poaching or increased real-world seizure rate is established by the cited research. |
What has been tested
The 2026 study reports that source implantation began in June 2024. Researchers implanted 18 white rhinos and two black rhinos. In January 2025, they measured 16 implanted white rhinos and five unimplanted white-rhino controls. Four implanted animals were not assessed because terrain created safety constraints. (Scientific Reports, 2026)
At six months, the authors reported no adverse biological effects among the 16 measured implanted white rhinos, and all recorded dose rates were below deterministic thresholds. These findings apply to the measured animals and the study’s follow-up; they do not settle every long-term or species-specific safety question.
The study also calls for more work on how radiation monitors perform under different shielding, concealment, transport routes, and environmental conditions. The project’s detection rationale is plausible, but the cited evidence does not establish a universal chance that a treated horn will be found in real trafficking conditions. How the project developed
The radioactive implantations followed an earlier research phase. Wits University’s 2021 account describes using stable, non-radioactive isotope-labeled material in two rhinos to investigate whether material could move from the horn into the body. It also discusses CT-based work, 3D-printed head phantoms, and dose modelling as safety preparation. Those early trials were not the same as implanting radioactive sources. (Wits University, 2021)
Wits’ 2021 account identifies collaborators including the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Colorado State University, ROSATOM, Necsa, researchers, rhino owners, and veterinarian William Fowlds. The current project site displays a broader set of partners and supporters. These listings show affiliations as presented by the sources; they should not be read as independent endorsement of every public claim. (Rhisotope Project)
Can customs detect a treated rhino horn?
A suitable radiation monitor may detect a treated horn if it passes through the monitor under conditions that produce a detectable signal. That is the intended supply-chain mechanism: a monitor registers radiation, officials investigate, and a horn may be intercepted. Detection depends on the equipment, route, cargo conditions, and follow-up.

The project FAQ points to monitors at ports, airports, land crossings, and elsewhere as part of the rationale for the approach. That is the project’s explanation, not an independent audit of detector coverage or a measured probability that a particular horn will be detected. (Rhisotope Project FAQ)
Wits reported in 2021 that 11,000 radiation monitors were installed globally at airports, ports, harbours, and border crossings. This is a dated institutional figure, not a current count or proof that every relevant route has a suitable monitor. (Wits University, 2021)
The peer-reviewed study describes interception as a potential and says detection estimates need further work under real-world conditions. A monitor alarm would not by itself identify a rhino horn or prove a wildlife crime; investigation and identification would still matter.

Does it stop poaching?
There are two proposed effects: deterrence before a poaching attempt, because people know the horn is marked, and detection after a treated horn enters transport. The project says signage and public communication are part of its deterrence approach. Neither effect has been demonstrated as a measured reduction in poaching by the evidence cited here. (Rhisotope Project; Scientific Reports, 2026)
The method also cannot prevent an attack in the field. It is one proposed tool within a wider conservation effort, not a replacement for reserve protection, law enforcement, ranger support, or community work. South Africa’s government describes an integrated approach involving intensive protection zones, cooperation between police and conservation authorities, ranger support, technology, and community economic opportunity. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains uncertain
- Long-term and species-specific safety: The published result covers 16 measured implanted white rhinos at six months, not every rhino species or lifetime outcomes.
- Real-world detection: More work is needed to estimate performance across shielding, concealment methods, transport routes, and environmental conditions.
- Deterrence and conservation impact: The cited research does not establish reduced poaching, increased seizure rates, or lower consumer demand.
- Coverage: Monitor availability and performance vary; the project FAQ’s rationale is not an independent coverage audit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are rhinos getting radioactive horns?
Some rhinos in South Africa have had a radioactive source implanted inside a horn as part of the Rhisotope Project. The source is localized in the horn; the procedure is not intended to make the whole animal radioactive.

Is the radioactive rhino horn safe for the animal?
The 2026 study reported no adverse biological effects among 16 measured implanted white rhinos six months after implantation, with dose rates below deterministic thresholds. The result is limited in sample and follow-up, so it does not establish long-term safety for every rhino or species.
Can customs detect a treated rhino horn?
A suitable radiation monitor may detect one under the right conditions. The study says further work is needed to assess detection across real-world shielding, routes, and concealment conditions, so detection is not guaranteed.
Does the project reduce rhino poaching?
The project aims to deter poaching and help detect trafficked horns, but the cited research does not demonstrate a measured reduction in poaching or an increase in real-world seizures.
How many rhinos were included in the published study?
The study reports implanting 18 white rhinos and two black rhinos. Its January 2025 measurement campaign included 16 implanted white rhinos and five unimplanted white-rhino controls; four implanted animals were not assessed because terrain created safety constraints.

The bottom line
South Africa’s Rhisotope Project implants a low-activity radioactive source inside some rhino horns to make them potentially detectable in transport and to deter poaching or purchase. A 2026 study reported reassuring but limited six-month findings in 16 measured white rhinos. Whether the approach works reliably in real trafficking conditions or reduces poaching remains unproven, and it should be viewed as one possible tool alongside broader conservation and enforcement work.
