What is Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park?
Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a managed wildlife-observation facility where visitors can watch Japanese macaques living in their natural mountain environment. The monkeys are not zoo animals kept in cages. The park says it attracts them through a regulated feeding routine, while visitors observe their behavior in an open setting.
The nickname “snow monkeys” refers to Japanese macaques living in a region with substantial winter snow. Some macaques use the park’s hot-spring pool during cold weather, producing the familiar photographs of red-faced monkeys sitting in steaming water.
The park’s official guide makes the purpose clear: Our facility is to provide the place for observation of monkeys’ ecology to everyone, not an Onsen (hot spring) facility for human bathing.
The hot spring is part of the monkeys’ environment and behavior; it is not an attraction where people and animals share the water.
When is the best month to see the snow monkeys bathing?
Winter is the best season for the classic snowy scenery and the strongest chance of seeing Japanese macaques in the hot spring, because the park says the monkeys bathe to help stave off the cold during winter. A winter visit still does not guarantee that a monkey will be in the water.
The official guide states: Monkeys do bathe in the park’s hot spring baths, but they do this as a means of staving off the cold during winter.
The monkeys do not use the bath at every hour, every day, or throughout the year. The park also warns that monkeys may not visit on some days and that appearances can be particularly sporadic in autumn.
| Season | What you may experience | How predictable is bathing? |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Snowy mountain scenery and the strongest seasonal reason for monkeys to use the hot spring | Best chance, but no guarantee on a particular day or at a particular hour |
| Spring | Changing mountain scenery and active macaques | Do not assume the bath will be occupied |
| Autumn | Seasonal colour and cooler conditions | Official park information says monkey appearances can be particularly sporadic |
| Summer | Milder walking conditions and a different mountain setting | The monkeys do not use the bath throughout the year, so bathing is not a reasonable expectation |
No reliable official probability is available for seeing a bathing monkey at a specific time or on a specific date. Plan for a wildlife encounter rather than a guaranteed display, and check the park’s current status immediately before leaving.

Is the Snow Monkey Pass worth considering?
The SNOW MONKEY PASS may simplify costs and planning for visitors travelling on Nagano Dentetsu during its published validity period. Nagano Electric Railway describes the pass as combining Nagano Dentetsu rail travel, a Yudanaka–Snow Monkey Park local-bus round trip, and one park admission.
The Nagano Electric Railway pass information lists a 2026 sales period from April 1 through September 30, 2026, at ¥4,800 for adults and ¥2,400 for children aged 6–12. Those dates and prices are a dated offer, not a permanent fare. Confirm that the pass is valid and available for the actual travel date before buying it.
How long is the walk to Snow Monkey Park?
The official route from the Snow Monkey Park bus stop to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen takes approximately 35 minutes on foot. The walk is not a flat, paved city stroll: the approach can be snowy, icy, muddy, uneven, unpaved, and stepped, particularly in winter.
Official visitor information describes average winter temperatures around -1°C, possible lows near -10°C, and expected snow cover of 40–50 cm. The official Snow Monkey Park visitor information recommends warm clothing and hiking shoes or boots.
Wear waterproof, insulated hiking boots and allow extra time for ice, snow, and slower movement. Microspikes or traction cleats for icy paths can be sensible when the forecast and current trail conditions warrant them, but no single footwear setup is right for every date. Protect phones and cameras from cold and moisture, and bring warm layers, gloves, and a hat.
Is Jigokudani Monkey Park accessible by wheelchair?
Jigokudani Monkey Park is not accessible to wheelchairs and carts on either approach according to the official access information. The routes include unpaved roads, uneven surfaces, and steps, so mobility needs should be assessed before booking the visit rather than after arriving.

Visitors should treat the macaques as wild animals: do not feed, touch, chase, or obstruct them. Keep a safe distance, follow staff instructions, and do not attempt to attract a monkey into the hot spring for a photograph.
Can you bring a dog or other pet?
No. Pets are not allowed under the park’s stated policy, including assistance animals. The park explains that dogs are regarded as a natural enemy of the monkeys. Guardians should also keep young children’s hands held rather than allowing children to approach or handle the animals.
What should you plan before visiting?
- Check attendance expectations: A bathing monkey is never guaranteed, and the monkeys may not appear on a particular day.
- Check the weather and trail: Snow, ice, mud, and cold can materially change the walk.
- Confirm hours and admission: Use the official guide immediately before departure because the park can shorten hours or close without notice.
- Confirm transport: Recheck rail and bus timetables, fares, and seasonal service.
- Plan enough time: Include the approximately 35-minute walk from the bus stop in both directions, plus time at the park.
- Pack for a mountain walk: Bring warm layers, gloves, a hat, suitable boots, and conditional traction equipment.
- Respect the animals: Do not feed, touch, chase, bathe with, or deliberately disturb the macaques.
If Jigokudani is one stop on a larger itinerary, a current Japan travel guidebook can help connect Nagano with Tokyo, Kyoto, Kanazawa, and other destinations. Verify live transport, park hours, weather, and trail conditions separately because a guidebook cannot guarantee current operating details.
What else can you do in the area?
Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen are natural add-ons for travellers building a regional itinerary around the park. Nagano and other destinations in the wider region can also be combined with Jigokudani, depending on the route and available transport.
