To make a useful birdhouse, choose a cavity-nesting bird that lives in your area, then build a nest box to a plan designed for that species. The box needs a correctly sized entrance, drainage, ventilation, a cleanable opening, and a suitable mounting location; there is no single cut list that fits every bird.

The steps below explain how to follow a species-specific plan. A bluebird box is one example, not a universal template.

1. Choose the bird and a matching plan

Start by identifying a cavity-nesting species found in your region and habitat. Use a plan that specifies the bird’s entrance size and height, interior dimensions, mounting height, and site. Plans vary, so do not combine measurements from different designs.

For example, the U.S. Geological Survey’s bluebird-box plan describes a hole close to 1.5 inches. That is a specification for that plan, not a standard for every birdhouse. Alaska Department of Fish and Game guidance likewise recommends adapting plans to the selected species’ dimensions.

2. Gather materials and tools

Follow the materials list for your chosen plan. A USGS bluebird plan uses a standard 1-by-6-inch board four feet long, a separate 1-by-10-inch roof board about 10.5 inches long, galvanized fasteners, pivot fasteners, and a door fastener. These are that plan’s materials, not a universal shopping list.

  • Untreated lumber specified by your plan; Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources advises against pressure-treated wood.
  • Galvanized nails or screws, plus any hinge, pivot fastener, or latch specified in the plan.
  • A saw, drill, measuring tools, and the hole-cutting tool needed for the plan’s entrance.
  • Eye protection and a safe way to secure the work while cutting or drilling.

USGS advises adult help with measuring and sawing. Use tools only as directed and follow the safety guidance for your tools.

3. Measure and cut the panels

Cut the front, back, sides, floor, and roof to the dimensions in your selected plan. Some designs use a taller back than front to create the roof pitch. Mark each piece before cutting, and keep the plan’s measurements together rather than borrowing dimensions from another box.

Check that the pieces fit as intended before assembly. If you are new to woodworking, ask an experienced adult to help with measuring and cutting.

4. Cut the species-sized entrance

Mark and cut the entrance at the diameter and height specified by the plan. The opening and its placement are species-specific: Oregon State University Extension explains that nest-box dimensions should match the intended bird. Do not assume that a hole sized for a bluebird or another species will suit every cavity-nesting bird.

Keep the cut clean and smooth away rough edges without changing the opening size. Do not add a front perch; University of New Hampshire Extension lists a perch among features to avoid.

5. Add drainage and ventilation

Include the drainage and ventilation features shown in the chosen plan. Designs implement them in different ways: the USGS bluebird plan uses cut floor corners for drainage and a ventilation gap near the roof, while other plans use drilled holes. Use one plan’s design rather than mixing details from incompatible plans.

6. Assemble the box without a front perch

Fit and fasten the panels securely, following the order and fastener instructions in your plan. The USGS plan specifies galvanized fasteners. Check that the box is square and that joints fit together as intended.

A front perch is not needed for nesting birds. Leave it off a functional nest box.

7. Make the box easy to open and inspect

Include a hinged or swinging side, or another secure opening specified by the plan, so the box can be inspected and cleaned when appropriate. The opening should close securely when the box is in use. Plan for access before mounting the box, and follow local wildlife guidance when maintaining it.

8. Mount it for the species and site

Follow the plan’s mounting height, habitat, and support instructions. The USGS bluebird plan says to mount its box on a post in a grassy area, not on a tree. That advice applies to that bluebird design; other birds and settings may call for different placement.

Before installing the box, check that the chosen location matches the target species and leaves the entrance accessible. Follow the mounting guidance from your plan and local wildlife authorities.

How do different birdhouse plans compare?

Plan consideration What to check Why it matters
Target species and local range Whether the bird occurs in your area and habitat A box is useful only if its intended bird can use the site
Entrance and interior dimensions Hole diameter and height, floor size, and box depth These measurements vary by species and plan
Weather features Drainage and ventilation method Plans provide these features in different ways
Access and mounting Cleanable opening, mounting height, habitat, and support Inspection and placement depend on the selected design

When should you clean a birdhouse?

Follow local wildlife guidance and clean or inspect a box only when it is appropriate to do so. University of New Hampshire Extension notes that old nesting material may deter birds and that rodents may use boxes in winter. Plan access for maintenance before the box is occupied, and do not disturb an active nest.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a universal cut list: Choose measurements for the target species and follow one complete plan.
  • Choosing the wrong entrance: Use the diameter and height specified by the selected plan.
  • Skipping drainage or ventilation: Include the features and method shown in that plan.
  • Using pressure-treated wood: Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources advises against it for its birdhouse plan.
  • Adding a front perch: University of New Hampshire Extension says one is not needed.
  • Mounting by convenience alone: Follow the target species’ habitat and mounting guidance.
  • Making the box impossible to open: Provide the cleanable access described in the plan.

FAQ

Can I use the same birdhouse plan for every bird?

No. Entrance and interior dimensions, mounting height, and habitat vary. Choose a cavity-nesting species in your region and follow a plan designed for it.

Is a 1.5-inch entrance hole right for every birdhouse?

No. The USGS bluebird plan calls for a hole close to 1.5 inches, but that is an example for its bluebird design. Use the entrance measurement in the plan for your target species.

Does a birdhouse need a perch?

No. University of New Hampshire Extension says a front perch is unnecessary. Leave it off a functional nest box.

How should a birdhouse drain and ventilate?

Use the features shown in your selected plan. Designs may use clipped floor corners or drilled holes for drainage, and a ventilation gap or holes near the roof. Do not combine details from different plans without checking that they work together.

How do I make a birdhouse easy to clean?

Build in a secure hinged or swinging side, or another cleanable opening specified by your plan. Follow local wildlife guidance about when inspection and cleaning are appropriate.
