A remarkable underwater video shows hundreds, possibly thousands, of female Port Jackson sharks resting close together on the seafloor in Australia’s Beagle Marine Park. The sharks were filmed at about 65 metres below the surface, and researchers had seen a similar aggregation in the same area in 2018.
The gathering may be connected to the species’ seasonal reproductive movements, but that is still a hypothesis. The video shows where the sharks were and what they were doing—not exactly why they gathered, why the group was so large, or why it appeared to consist entirely of females.
These are Port Jackson sharks—not generic “sleeping sharks”
Port Jackson sharks (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) are distinctive Australian bottom-dwelling sharks. They have blunt heads, compact bodies and dark, harness-like markings across their backs. Unlike the fast-swimming image associated with many shark species, Port Jackson sharks spend much of their time close to the seabed.

They are also generally considered non-aggressive toward people. In this footage, the animals are lying or moving slowly along the bottom rather than displaying hunting behavior.
If you want to identify the species’ markings and learn more about its egg-laying biology, a Port Jackson shark book or Australian shark-identification field guide is a useful educational companion. It should not be treated as a guide to this specific expedition unless the book explicitly documents it.
Where was the shark gathering filmed?
The footage was recorded in Beagle Marine Park, a protected marine area off Tasmania, at approximately 65 metres depth. Researchers from the University of Tasmania reported that the later survey revisited an area where a comparable Port Jackson shark gathering had been observed in 2018.
That repeat observation matters. A single large group could be an unusual coincidence or a temporary response to local conditions. Seeing a similar gathering at the site years later suggests that the area may be used repeatedly by Port Jackson sharks, perhaps during a particular part of their annual cycle.

Are the sharks really asleep?
“Thousands of sharks asleep” is an understandable description of the striking footage, but “resting” is more scientifically precise.

Port Jackson sharks are benthic, or bottom-living, animals and are non-obligate ventilators. That means they do not have to swim continuously to force water across their gills. They can remain stationary on the seafloor while continuing to breathe.
Scientists can distinguish periods of swimming from periods of resting in this species, and activity appears to increase around sunset and decline before sunrise. Even so, a motionless shark is not necessarily in a state identical to human sleep. It may remain responsive, make small movements or shift position while resting.

The leading explanation is seasonal reproduction
Port Jackson sharks are oviparous, meaning that females lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young. Their eggs are enclosed in tough, dark-brown, spiral-shaped cases.
The species is known to congregate around seafloor features such as caves, ledges and gutters during the late-winter-to-spring breeding period. Research from eastern Australia has identified a synchronized annual breeding season extending from austral winter into spring, with peak egg-laying generally occurring from August through October in New South Wales.
Those seasonal patterns make reproductive activity the most credible context for a female-heavy aggregation. The sharks may have been moving toward or away from a reproductive area, resting during a seasonal migration, or using the site as a staging location.

But the footage cannot tell us which of those possibilities is correct. It does not prove that the sharks were mating, preparing to lay eggs, feeding before migration or depositing eggs at the location. Reproduction is the leading explanation, not a settled answer.
Why were all the sharks female?
The apparent all-female composition is one of the most intriguing details. Sex segregation and female-biased use of particular resting or reproductive areas are known features of Port Jackson shark ecology, but the reason can differ depending on the season, the sharks’ age and maturity, their reproductive condition and their movements.
One possibility is that females were using the area during a seasonal reproductive movement while males occupied another habitat or arrived at a different time. Another is that the site simply offered favorable conditions for daytime resting or staging, and females happened to be the group most likely to use it during the survey.
Researchers would need more than visual footage to distinguish those explanations. The sex of every animal would need to be confirmed, individual sharks would need to be identified where possible, and observations would need to be repeated across different seasons and times of day.
Why the size of the group remains uncertain
The University of Tasmania described the gathering as numbering in the hundreds, possibly thousands. That wording is important: the video gives researchers an impressive estimate, but it does not provide a verified count of every shark in the area.
Dense underwater groups are difficult to count accurately. Animals may overlap in the camera’s view, disappear beyond the illuminated area or be present outside the section filmed. The responsible description is therefore “hundreds, possibly thousands”, not an exact total.

What could explain the aggregation besides breeding?
Reproduction is not the only possible factor. A large group could reflect several influences operating together:
- Seasonal movement: the sharks may have been traveling between feeding, resting and reproductive habitats.
- Seafloor shelter: underwater ledges, gutters or other features may provide a suitable place to remain still.
- Temperature and currents: local water conditions could make the site energetically favorable at a particular time.
- Food availability: the sharks could be gathering near a productive feeding area, although the resting footage does not demonstrate that they were feeding.
- Social or behavioral patterns: groups may form because individuals respond to the same environmental cues, even without coordinated social behavior.
Nothing in the video alone can rank these possibilities with confidence. The recurring sighting is a reason to investigate the site, not proof that one explanation has been confirmed.
What scientists would need to find out
A stronger study would survey the location repeatedly through the year and compare the number, sex and maturity of sharks present. Researchers could also record:
- water temperature, depth, currents and other local conditions;
- the exact shape and shelter available on the seafloor;
- the time of day and season when aggregations appear;
- evidence of egg cases or other reproductive activity;
- individual markings, to determine whether the same sharks return;
- movement patterns using tags or acoustic telemetry.
Genetic research on Port Jackson sharks has found evidence of female reproductive philopatry—the tendency for females to return to established reproductive areas. If Beagle Marine Park is one of those repeatedly used sites, long-term monitoring could reveal an important part of the species’ life cycle.
That possibility also gives the footage conservation value. A recurring aggregation site may be especially important if it supports predictable seasonal movements or reproduction. Protecting the area and continuing non-invasive surveys could help researchers understand whether disturbance or habitat change affects the sharks’ use of it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A spectacular observation, not proof of a new shark behavior
The footage is unusual and visually astonishing, but it does not show a completely new behavior. Port Jackson sharks are already known to rest on the seafloor and form seasonal aggregations. What makes this observation valuable is its scale, its female-heavy composition and the fact that a similar gathering was recorded in the area in 2018.

The most defensible conclusion is that a large group of female Port Jackson sharks was using Beagle Marine Park during a period that may have been associated with seasonal reproduction. Researchers still need to determine why so many sharks gathered together, why males were apparently absent and what the site means in the species’ annual cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of sharks are shown in the video?
The sharks in the footage are female Port Jackson sharks (Heterodontus portusjacksoni), an Australian bottom-dwelling species recognizable by its blunt head and dark harness-like markings.
Were the sharks actually asleep?
The footage shows the sharks resting on the seafloor. Port Jackson sharks can breathe while stationary, but that does not necessarily mean they were all in a human-like sleep state.
How many sharks were in the gathering?
Researchers reported hundreds, possibly thousands, of sharks at about 65 metres depth in Beagle Marine Park. A similar aggregation was observed there in 2018, but no verified exact count is available.
Why did so many female Port Jackson sharks gather?
Seasonal reproductive movement or a breeding-related aggregation is the leading explanation. However, the footage does not prove that the sharks were mating, laying eggs or using the site as a permanent breeding colony.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The video shows hundreds, possibly thousands, of female Port Jackson sharks resting at about 65 metres in Beagle Marine Park. Seasonal reproduction is the leading explanation, but the footage does not prove mating, egg-laying or a permanent breeding colony—and “resting” is more accurate than assuming every shark was asleep.
