Colossal Biosciences says it produced four living clones from Gulf Coast canids it calls “red ghost wolves.” Those donors reportedly carried substantial red-wolf ancestry, but the public evidence does not establish that they were pure red wolves from the official recovery population. The cloning claim and the label “red wolves” are separate questions.
What Colossal says it produced
In April 2025, Colossal announced four cloned canids: Neka Kayda, Ash, Blaze and Cinder. The company describes them as “red ghost wolves” or “ghost wolves,” and says they were made from cells collected from living Gulf Coast canids. It has presented the work as a way to preserve genetic material that may be missing or underrepresented in the managed red-wolf population. Colossal’s project explanation and Associated Press reporting describe the announcement.
Colossal says it used endothelial progenitor cells obtained from blood, rather than relying on a surgical tissue biopsy. In conventional somatic-cell nuclear transfer, a donor cell’s nucleus is placed into an egg cell whose own nucleus has been removed; an embryo is then carried by a surrogate. A resulting clone is intended to closely match the donor’s nuclear DNA. It is not necessarily identical in every biological respect: mitochondrial DNA comes from the egg donor, while development and environment also shape the animal. Colossal describes its method on its science page.
Neka Kayda is identified by Colossal as the first clone in the project. The company says her donor was a female Gulf Coast “ghost wolf” with an estimated 70.8% red-wolf ancestry. Across the ghost-wolf animals it studied, Colossal reports estimates in the range of roughly 69% to 72%. These are company-reported ancestry estimates, not a simple measure of how much of an animal is one species. Colossal Foundation’s project description gives the Neka Kayda donor figure.

What “ghost wolf” means—and why the name matters
“Ghost wolf” is not a universally recognized species name. Colossal uses it for Gulf Coast canids whose genomes, it says, retain “ghost alleles”—genetic variants associated with historical red wolves—alongside coyote ancestry. Independent coverage has described the donors as Gulf Coast canids commonly characterized as coyotes with substantial red-wolf ancestry, rather than straightforward members of the managed red-wolf population. Scientific American’s coverage discusses this distinction.
The key difference is between cloning an animal and deciding how that animal should be classified. A clone is a genetic copy of a particular donor’s nuclear genome; cloning does not turn a mixed-ancestry donor into a pure red wolf or recreate the full genetic diversity of historical red wolves. So “Colossal cloned four Gulf Coast canids carrying red-wolf ancestry” is more precise than saying, without qualification, that it cloned four pure red wolves.

That distinction is especially relevant because the endangered red wolf, Canis rufus, is managed through an established U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Association of Zoos and Aquariums recovery and captive-breeding structure. The federal program has operated with AZA oversight since 1984. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recovery-program page describes that system. The agency’s program materials do not, by themselves, establish that Colossal’s clones have been accepted into it.
How strong is the public evidence?
There are several distinct claims to evaluate:
- Do living animals exist? Colossal has announced four named animals, and the announcement has been covered by news outlets including the Associated Press. This supports the report that the company produced living animals.
- Were they made by cloning? Colossal says yes and describes a blood-cell-based cloning method. The available material for this article does not include an independent, peer-reviewed genomic audit of each animal.
- What were the donors? The company identifies them as Gulf Coast “ghost wolves” and reports substantial red-wolf ancestry. That ancestry and the donor classification should be attributed to the company rather than presented as a settled, independently verified taxonomic finding.
- Are the clones part of the official recovery effort? The public sources cited here do not establish formal incorporation into the federal/AZA managed breeding program or approval for release.
The absence of publicly available independent genomic confirmation is a limit on what can be concluded from public evidence; it is not proof that cloning did not occur. A clearer scientific assessment would require published methods and genomic data that outside researchers could evaluate, as well as a transparent account of how ancestry was estimated.

Could cloning help red-wolf conservation?
Potentially, but it has not been shown that these four animals have restored the red wolf or improved the official recovery population. If a donor carries rare genetic variants, cloning could make additional animals carrying that donor’s line. That is a possible way to preserve or expand representation of a genetic line—not a way to create new variation or automatically solve inbreeding.
Before the clones or their descendants could contribute to a recovery program, conservation managers would need to assess the ancestry and genetic risks, health and fertility, and whether introducing that line fits the program’s goals. Captive-born animals would also need appropriate behavioral preparation before any consideration of release. A clone is not automatically adapted to life in the wild, and multiplying one donor does not create the broad genetic base of a resilient population.

Those questions sit alongside the practical work of recovery: managing breeding and releases, protecting habitat, and addressing threats such as disease and human-caused mortality. Colossal’s proposed conservation application is therefore best treated as a possibility to evaluate, not an accomplished species-recovery result. The USFWS program information describes the existing managed effort.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this differs from Colossal’s dire-wolf claim
The two projects involve different claims and techniques. The red-wolf project is described as cloning living Gulf Coast canids that carry red-wolf ancestry. The dire-wolf project used gene editing in gray wolves, drawing on ancient DNA to identify or model selected traits; it did not clone a living dire wolf. Coverage in TIME explains the distinction. Debate over whether gene-edited gray wolves should be called “dire wolves” does not, by itself, disprove the separate claim that Colossal cloned living canids.

The verdict
Colossal’s announcement appears to describe real living cloned animals, and the company says their donors carried substantial red-wolf ancestry. But “cloned red wolves” is incomplete if it leads readers to picture four verified pure red wolves from the federal/AZA recovery population. The most careful description is that Colossal says it cloned Gulf Coast “ghost wolves” carrying red-wolf ancestry. Their precise genetic status, independent verification and potential role in official conservation remain separate questions.
