Electrical Harps for Asian Hornets: How They Work and What Beekeepers Should Know

Electric harps can reduce Vespa velutina hunting pressure near beehives, but they need careful placement, frequent inspection and realistic expectations.

An electric harp can reduce Vespa velutina hunting pressure immediately around honey-bee hives, but it does not locate or eliminate hornet nests. It is a powered interception barrier: useful in some affected apiaries, provided it is installed, checked and operated with care. Evidence comes mainly from Spanish field studies, so results should not be treated as a guarantee for every location or design.

What is an electrical harp for Asian hornets?

An electric harp is a non-baited frame of parallel wires placed near beehives. Neighboring wires connect alternately to opposite electrical poles. When a hornet bridges two wires, it receives a shock and may be stunned or temporarily paralyzed, then fall into a tray or other collector beneath the frame. The “harp” name refers to the parallel wires; sound is not the lure.

The target in most European beekeeping discussions is the yellow-legged Asian hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax, or the broader species Vespa velutina. It is not the Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia. Species and control advice vary by region, so confirm what hornet is present and follow local reporting guidance.

The device aims to intercept hornets that hover near hive entrances and catch returning bees. It may reduce local hunting pressure and help bees resume foraging. It cannot stop every hornet, protect every approach to a hive, or remove a nest elsewhere in the landscape. Field research on electric harps and a management review describe them as a local defensive measure, not eradication.

What does the evidence say about whether harps work?

2022 field experiment in Galicia

A field experiment across three apiaries in Galicia, Spain, followed 36 hives: six in each apiary had electric-harp protection and six were unprotected. Researchers initially left the harps switched off for a week so honey bees could become accustomed to their presence. More than 90% of the 4,359 insects captured were V. velutina. Mean capture rates were 1.6 hornets and 0.17 non-target insects per trap per day. The protected hives had 88.8% lower observed predation pressure than unprotected hives; researchers also reported better foraging, pollen income, brood production, worker weight and winter survival, particularly at sites with intermediate-to-high predation pressure. Read the study.

Those results apply to the tested design, sites, season and hornet pressure. They are evidence that a harp can help under some field conditions, not a performance guarantee for every commercial product or apiary.

2026 comparison with muzzles

A study published in 2026 compared four groups protected with muzzles, four groups protected with two electric harps, and four untreated control groups, covering 36 hives over ten consecutive weeks of peak predation. The fieldwork took place in 2020 in northeastern Catalonia. Harp-protected groups had lower hornet abundance and slower declines in honey, pollen and brood. At the end of the experiment, 25% of harp-protected colonies remained active, while the untreated and muzzle-protected colonies had collapsed. The authors cautioned that pre-existing colony health strongly affected outcomes. This is a result from one high-pressure experiment, not a general survival rate or proof that harps alone prevent colony collapse. Read the study.

How selective are they?

Harps can be highly selective in some settings, but they are not harmless to all other wildlife. A three-year study at four locations in Girona found that Asian hornets made up 82.9% of 3,902 captures overall, with site- and year-level values ranging from 20.5% to 94.3%. Native insects averaged 1.7% of captures, and European hornets accounted for 0.1%. That variation matters: local conditions and device setup can change the balance between target captures and bycatch. See the Girona study.

Honey bees may be shocked or killed if they touch adjacent wires. Other wasps, flies and wild bees may also be caught; a management review notes reports of birds found in electric harps in Galicia. Wire spacing, collector design, position, cleanliness and maintenance all affect selectivity. A collector that lets smaller insects escape may reduce some bycatch, but “selective” does not mean wildlife-proof. The review discusses these risks.

How is a harp different from a trap or hive muzzle?

Measure Main purpose How it acts Important limitation
Electric harp Reduce hornet hunting pressure close to hives Intercepts flying insects at electrified wires; usually does not use bait Needs power, safe placement and frequent checks; does not remove nests
Baited trap Surveillance or seasonal reduction where locally recommended Uses bait or a lure to draw insects into a container May catch non-target insects; requires bait management and inspection
Hive muzzle or entrance screen Modify access around the hive entrance Creates a physical barrier or altered approach Does not necessarily stop hornets hunting outside; poorly managed screens can affect hive traffic or ventilation

No method universally replaces the others. A harp targets activity in the flight path near hives; a trap may serve monitoring or population-reduction goals; a muzzle changes the hive entrance area. In the 2026 comparison, harps performed better than the tested muzzles under the study conditions, but that does not establish that every harp outperforms every screen or muzzle.

Where should a harp go?

Placement should make hornets cross the wires without forcing normal bee traffic through them. Research and management guidance commonly place harps in front of entrances or between neighboring hives, with a tray or collector below. One review describes layouts with a harp between every two or three hives in some cases, but there is no universal spacing or harp count. Consider hive arrangement, terrain, shade, wind, vegetation and the hornets’ approach paths; follow the specific product’s instructions.

  • Position the frame so a hovering hornet is likely to cross it while bees retain a clear route to the entrance.
  • Avoid placing it so close that it disrupts bee traffic or increases bee contact with wires.
  • Use a stable frame and secure collector; keep vegetation and debris from touching the wires.
  • Watch whether hornets start going around the device. They may learn its position, so repositioning can be necessary.

The 2022 experiment placed harps between contiguous hives and used a modified design intended to minimize bycatch. That arrangement is not a universal installation specification. Study details and management guidance provide context.

What maintenance and troubleshooting does a harp need?

Frequent inspection is part of operating a harp, not an optional extra. Check the frame and collector according to the manufacturer’s schedule and local conditions, especially after storms or heavy insect activity.

  • Look for dead hornets, trapped bees, escaped insects or a full collector.
  • Remove mud, dust, wax, vegetation and insect remains that could bridge wires or interfere with operation.
  • Check wire tension, connections, insulators, corrosion, enclosure seals and power indicators.
  • Verify the unit is actually operating; a dark solar panel, failed battery or faulty controller can leave a harp inactive without obvious signs.
  • Note whether captures fall while hornets remain active nearby, which may indicate bypassing, changed flight paths or device failure.

If there are no captures, do not assume hornets are gone: confirm power and inspect wiring, then consider whether hornets are approaching by another route. If bee bycatch rises, check distance from entrances, wire geometry and collector design, and suspend operation until the cause is addressed. If water, corrosion or damaged insulation is present, isolate the system as its instructions require and have a qualified person inspect it before restarting.

Solar systems can underperform in shade or during prolonged low light, and batteries and controllers need monitoring. Rain, condensation, snow and debris can affect performance or create unintended conductive paths. Confirm that the unit is rated for local weather, whether it has battery backup, and how it shuts down and discharges before servicing. One seller recommends a water tray, sometimes with a little soap to reduce surface tension and prevent stunned hornets escaping; treat that as seller guidance for its product, not a universal instruction. What is the Hackster electrical-harp project?

A 2018 Hackster.io student engineering project describes a harp intended to sit in front of hives. Its architecture takes DC input, uses an inverter to convert DC to AC, then uses a Greinacher voltage-multiplier circuit to raise the voltage applied to the wires. The page shows circuit testing in LTspice and lists components including a 1N4007 diode and a 680-µF electrolytic capacitor. View the project.

The page identifies the work as a work in progress; it is not a safety-certified commercial design or a validated build manual. Its component list and diagrams do not establish a safe operating voltage, current, pulse behavior, weatherproofing or discharge behavior. A voltage multiplier can retain charge after power is removed, and moisture or contamination can change leakage paths. Do not infer an appropriate voltage or treat the listed parts as a complete bill of materials.

For ordinary beekeepers, a professionally designed system with clear operating and shutdown instructions is a more appropriate route than reproducing an unverified high-voltage circuit. Any custom design belongs in the hands of a qualified electrical designer or experienced, supervised maker with suitable test equipment, enclosure and insulation design, overcurrent protection, current limiting, guarding and a safe discharge procedure.

Electrical and wildlife safety

An energized harp is not safe simply because it is sold for apiary use or powered by a small solar panel. Before choosing equipment, confirm its electrical safeguards, weather rating and maintenance procedure. Keep children, pets, livestock and unprotected workers away from the energized frame. Do not service it while powered or after wet weather unless the manufacturer’s shutdown and discharge steps have been followed.

  • Use a guarded, stable installation with insulated connections and clearly identified high-voltage areas.
  • Confirm how the device limits current, protects against faults and discharges stored energy before maintenance.
  • Inspect for water ingress, damaged cables, loose wires and conductive debris; do not operate a visibly damaged unit.
  • Check the collector for non-target insects and birds, and adjust or stop operation if harm is occurring.
  • Verify local electrical, wildlife and product rules; legal requirements and species guidance differ by region.

Evidence cited here is concentrated in European locations invaded by V. velutina, especially Spain and Catalonia. It does not establish performance against other hornet species or local approvals for every country. No U.S.-specific regulatory position or product approval is established here.

Should you buy a commercial harp or build one?

For most beekeepers, a purpose-designed commercial unit is preferable to a homemade high-voltage build, provided the product has clear safety documentation and suits the apiary. Commercial harps use the same general interception principle as research devices, but that does not mean a particular product is the one evaluated in a published study.

Example: Tartago solar kit

The seller lists a Tartago stainless-steel water-harp kit with a harp frame, electrical module, 10-W solar panel and plastic water tray. The seller describes a frame 60 cm wide by 95 cm high, 20-mm wire spacing, ceramic insulators, self-tensioning wires and a solar module it says can power up to five harps. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance validation. The page displayed prices of €259.95 and €272.50 in its tax-inclusive pricing area when checked for this article; prices, tax treatment, stock and currency presentation can change. See the product listing.

The same seller’s category page showed separate harp frames, modules, solar and battery kits, trays, extensions, traps and lures at varying listed prices. A standalone frame may still require a controller, power supply, wiring, tray and mounting hardware, so compare the cost and completeness of the system rather than the frame price alone. Browse the seller’s category.

Buying checklist

  • Does the system include the frame, power module, power source, collector, cabling and mounting parts you need?
  • How many harp frames can its controller support, and does solar operation have battery backup for shade or low light?
  • Are the wire spacing, insulators, tensioning and collector appropriate for local bee traffic and non-target wildlife?
  • Does the supplier provide clear instructions for shutdown, discharge, cleaning, fault checks and weather exposure?
  • Can you obtain replacement wires, insulators, batteries and other parts, and inspect the apiary often enough?
  • Does the supplier ship to your region, and does the product meet local electrical and wildlife requirements?

A solar kit may suit a small, sunny European apiary with confirmed V. velutina pressure and regular maintenance. It may be a poor fit for a shaded or remote site without backup power and inspections, a large apiary needing a more capable power-distribution system, or a buyer who needs locally approved equipment that cannot be verified.

What should accompany a harp?

Use the harp as one component of an integrated response, not a substitute for it. Report suspected nests through the locally appropriate channel and leave nest approach or removal to trained professionals; do not disturb a suspected nest yourself. Maintain colony health through appropriate nutrition, disease management, queen care and routine hive management, since a harp does not correct underlying weakness. Entrance screens, physical barriers and selective baited traps may have a role where local guidance supports them, but each brings its own trade-offs and should be monitored.

A harp is most reasonable when V. velutina has been confirmed and hornets are actively hunting near hive entrances, the layout permits safe interception, and someone can inspect the equipment regularly. Its defensible promise is reduced local predation pressure under suitable conditions—not hornet eradication or guaranteed colony survival.
