The best pet tech depends on the problem. Compare feeders, GPS trackers, cameras, litter boxes, and monitors by safety, cost, upkeep, and pet acceptance.

The best high-tech pet gadget is the one that reliably solves a problem you have: missed meals, escape risk, uncertainty while you’re away, or a litter box that needs less daily attention. There is no single best device for every pet. Before buying, weigh safety, pet acceptance, maintenance, connectivity, and the full cost of subscriptions and supplies—not just the feature list.

Quick picks by problem

Need Best type of gadget Best fit Main drawback
Keep meals on schedule Automatic feeder with manual controls and backup power Pets eating measured dry-food portions Jams, power loss, or food theft can still disrupt a meal
Find an escape-prone pet Cellular GPS tracker Dogs and outdoor cats within supported network coverage Usually requires a subscription; location depends on coverage and battery
Check in from away Pet camera Owners who want to observe behavior or confirm a pet is home It cannot intervene, and cloud features may cost extra
Reduce scooping Self-cleaning litter box Cats that accept the design and owners who will maintain it Expensive, not maintenance-free, and not every cat will use one
Notice routine changes Weight, activity, eating, or litter-use monitor Tracking trends, especially alongside veterinary guidance Monitoring is not diagnosis
Encourage drinking Water fountain Pets that prefer moving water Filters and pumps need regular cleaning and replacement

Prices and model specifications below are U.S. listing signals observed August 18, 2026, where provided; they can change. Manufacturer pages are useful for current specifications and terms, but a listed feature is not proof of independent performance testing.

1. Automatic feeder: best for keeping dry-food meals on schedule

A connected feeder is useful when work or travel may make you late for a meal, or when you want to check that a scheduled dry-food portion was dispensed. Prioritize dependable dispensing and a fallback over a camera or voice feature. Check portion increments, schedule flexibility, food compatibility, hopper seal, cleaning access, jam and low-food alerts, and what happens if Wi-Fi or power fails.

As a current example, PETLIBRO lists its Granary Smart Camera Feeder at $139.99. The manufacturer specifies a 5-liter capacity, up to 10 scheduled meals or snacks daily, a 1080p camera with a 145-degree lens, app control, two-way voice, a quadruple-sealing design, and compatibility with dry kibble sized 2–15 mm. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every pet or kibble will work equally well.

Frienhund Automatic Cat Feeder with 2K Camera: 5G WiFi Automatic Dog Feeder with Night Vision,Cat Food Dispenser with 7L Large Food Storage Container for Multiple Pet,Detachable for Easy Clean -29 Cup
  • Go Out of Town Without Worrying : When you are traveling, attending a party or up too late to feed your pet at home, smart automatic cat feeder will regularly schedule your pet's daily food for you. No matter where you are, you can monitor your pet's daily routine and diet, as well as change your feeding schedule online, anytime, anywhere via the mobile app.
  • Feeding Schedule ( Regular Diet ) : Setting up a scientific feeding schedule for your pet (up to 15 meals per day, with a maximum of 20 portions per meal) with automatic dog feeder will not only improve your pet's eating habits, but also save pet owners' valuable time (you don't have to constantly think about whether your pet is getting food or not). Not only can you view your pet's feeding history in the app, but you can also view how much food is left in the dog food bowl via the camera.
  • Record Wonderful Moments ( Life ) : The Full HD 3 megapixel camera on the cat feeder automatic perfectly records every moment your pet is playing at home. Even when night falls, the infrared sensor in the camera provides clear night vision. It not only supports shooting and recording, but also supports storing data in TF card and cloud storage. (TF card supports up to 128GB) When you turn on motion detection, the APP will remind you when your cat is doing activities.
  • Dual-band WiFi : The Frienhund automatic cat feeder with camera supports dual-band WiFi (2.4GHz & 5GHz). Dual-band network lets you don't have to modify your router for channel compatibility issues. Faster 5G networks allow for more stable, crisp video quality.
  • Stay Close to Your Pet : “ Two-way Audio ” allows you to talk to your pet in real time. If your cat is sensitive to sound, you can adjust the volume of the feeder through the “Device Volume” in the APP. auto cat feeder supports various terminal logins, in addition to remote control via mobile phone or tablet, you can also log in to the IPC terminal via PC browser to keep your mischievous cat or dog company at all times.

Best for: A household that needs scheduled dry food and wants remote meal observation. Not a good fit: Wet-food-only diets without a separate safe solution, pets needing individually controlled access, or a home that cannot cover a missed meal if the mechanism jams. In multi-pet homes, one shared bowl may let a faster or more assertive pet take another’s portion; consider separated feeding stations or an access-controlled feeder.

Confirm whether the feeder continues its schedule offline, whether it has battery backup, and whether manual dispensing remains possible. Keep a backup feeding plan. An automatic feeder does not supply fresh water, supervise medication, provide exercise, or respond to an emergency—it is not a pet sitter.

2. GPS tracker: best for escape risk

For a pet that may leave the yard or roam, a cellular GPS tracker is generally more suitable than a Bluetooth tag. A GPS device determines location and sends it over a cellular connection, typically with a recurring service fee. Coverage, update speed, battery life, and performance indoors or in rural areas vary with the device, network, surroundings, and tracking mode.

Bluetooth and crowd-network tags are usually smaller and may be less costly, but they depend on nearby compatible phones or devices to update location. They are not equivalent to continuous, independent live GPS. Radio-frequency systems are another option in some settings, but typically use a dedicated receiver and closer-range searching.

Before buying, check the service price and contract, supported coverage where your pet travels, location history and safe-zone alerts, battery behavior in frequent-tracking mode, water resistance, attachment security, and device weight. A tracker is a poor choice if cellular service is unreliable or the collar can slip off. A microchip is different: it helps identify a recovered pet when scanned, but does not report live location. Keep the collar tag and microchip registration current, and use secure fencing and training too. A tracker supplements these safeguards; it does not replace them.

3. Pet camera: best for remote reassurance

A camera can show whether a pet is resting, eating, or moving around while you are away. Useful features include a practical field of view, night vision, motion or sound alerts, clear two-way audio, stable placement, and local recording or a cloud plan that suits your privacy preferences. Decide whether you need a camera-only model or would genuinely use treat dispensing; extra features also add mechanisms that can fail or require cleaning.

Place the camera where it can see the relevant area without being easy to knock over. Test alerts and audio before relying on them. Some pets may be unsettled by a speaker voice, and a camera can show behavior but generally cannot establish its cause or prevent a problem. If your pet needs someone physically present, a camera is not a substitute.

Cloud video history, longer clips, downloads, and advanced alerts may require a paid plan. For example, Petcube describes Petcube Care as an optional subscription for cloud video and smart-alert features. Compare that ongoing cost with a local-storage indoor camera if you only need basic monitoring. WIRED’s pet-camera guide also discusses practical limitations of treat features and pet robots, including awkward toy positioning and app reliability concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect camera privacy: use a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication if offered, limit account sharing, install app and firmware updates, and use a shutter or cover when appropriate. Avoid recording private spaces or conversations unnecessarily. Check what is saved in the cloud and for how long.

4. Self-cleaning litter box: best for reducing daily scooping

A self-cleaning box can reduce routine scooping, particularly in a multi-cat home, but it is a substantial purchase that still needs waste removal, cleaning, litter, and occasional troubleshooting. Check the cat’s weight against the product’s minimum and maximum, the number of cats it is intended to serve, litter compatibility, drawer capacity, safety sensors, jam recovery, replacement supplies, and whether useful app features carry a fee.

Whisker’s model comparison lists the Litter-Robot 4 at $699 for up to four cats and pets weighing 3–25 pounds. The Litter-Robot 5 Pro starts at $899, is listed for up to five cats and 3–30-pound pets, and adds integrated dual cameras. The EVO starts at $599 and is listed for up to two cats. Whisker’s product listings may show changing prices or offers, so verify the live listing and terms before purchase.

Those capacity and weight figures are manufacturer listings, not a promise that a particular household will get trouble-free use. Cats may reject an enclosed, elevated, or moving design; a kitten below the listed minimum may not trigger a unit safely. Introduce the box gradually and leave a conventional box available during acclimation. Keep a normal backup box accessible afterward too, especially if the automated unit jams or is offline. A cat that avoids the new box should not be forced to use it.

Budget for liners, filters, odor-control supplies, compatible litter, and cleaning time. “Self-cleaning” means the unit performs a cleaning cycle; it does not mean the unit cleans itself completely.

5. Health monitors: useful for trends, not diagnoses

Connected scales, feeders, litter monitors, and activity trackers may record weight, activity, eating or drinking patterns, or litter-box visits over time. A consistent record can help you spot a change and give your veterinarian useful context—especially when you are already monitoring a condition with professional guidance.

For example, Purina says its Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor uses AI to track a cat’s weight and bathroom events. Treat that as a monitoring claim, not proof of diagnostic accuracy. More frequent visits can have several causes, and a weight reading can be affected by placement or identification errors. In a multi-cat home, ask how the device distinguishes animals and how likely misattribution is.

Use a monitor to notice and record a trend, not to decide that a pet is healthy or to delay care. Contact a veterinarian about concerning symptoms or a sustained change even if an app labels the data normal. Consumer dashboards do not replace an examination, testing, or veterinary advice.

6. Water fountain: best only if your pet likes moving water

Some cats and dogs prefer a fountain, but a moving stream does not guarantee adequate hydration. The right test is whether your pet actually drinks from it and whether you will keep it clean. Compare stainless-steel and plastic drinking surfaces, pump noise, corded versus cordless operation, water-level alerts, ease of disassembly, and filter price and replacement frequency. Hair and residue can build up around the pump, so include regular cleaning in the ownership cost.

Keep an ordinary clean water bowl available while you find out whether the pet accepts the fountain—and as a fallback during cleaning or a power outage. If you want less upkeep, a simple stainless-steel bowl may be the more practical choice.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Interactive toys and pet robots: enrichment, with supervision

Remote-controlled toys, treat dispensers, and camera-equipped robots can add short bursts of activity for curious pets. Favor durable designs with safe moving parts, manageable noise, replaceable components, and a play pattern that gets the animal moving rather than simply watching. Check whether the toy needs an app or reliable Wi-Fi, and supervise early sessions to see whether your pet chews, swallows, guards, or attacks it.

Do not leave a fragile or string-like toy with a pet that may ingest pieces. Treats count toward the pet’s daily food intake. A laser alone does not provide a physical catch or reward, so it should not be presented as complete play. Interactive gadgets supplement walks, hands-on play, and companionship; they do not replace them.

8. Smart doors and access control

Microchip- or RFID-controlled doors can let a recognized pet pass while restricting other animals, which may help in a household that wants to manage outdoor access. Fit and installation matter: verify supported identification formats, the animal’s size, the door’s security, and how the door behaves during a power or connectivity failure. A smart door cannot make unsupervised outdoor access safe, and it is not appropriate for every pet or home.

For food theft between pets, a microchip or RFID feeder may be more directly useful than a camera-equipped shared feeder because it can restrict access to a recognized animal. Check that every pet can reach its own food calmly and that the device’s identification system fits your household.

Gadgets to approach cautiously

  • AI “translators” or diagnosis claims: Do not treat a consumer interpretation of a bark, meow, or behavior as a reliable translation or medical conclusion without published validation.
  • Devices with no fallback for an essential task: A feeder that cannot dispense manually or run offline may create more risk than convenience if the app, cloud, Wi-Fi, or power fails.
  • Feature-heavy products with recurring fees: Count cellular service, cloud video, AI alerts, filters, liners, bags, cartridges, and proprietary accessories before comparing prices.
  • Technology your pet avoids: A sophisticated litter box or robot is not useful if your animal is frightened of it or refuses it.

A simple bowl, secure fence, ordinary litter box, or human visit may solve the problem more reliably than another app-connected device.

How to choose without buying a gimmick

  1. Name the problem. Write down the specific recurring issue—missed meals, escapes, uncertainty during a short absence, daily scooping, or a need to log behavior. If there is no clear job for the device, wait.
  2. Check pet and household fit. Confirm species, size and weight limits, food or litter compatibility, number of animals supported, and whether pets can be identified separately.
  3. Plan for failure. Find out what happens when the internet, app, cellular signal, power, sensor, or mechanism fails. Essential functions should have a safe manual or physical fallback.
  4. Calculate total ownership cost. Add the hardware price to mandatory subscriptions, filters, bags, litter, batteries, replacement parts, and cleaning supplies. Check warranty, return window, and shipping terms.
  5. Assess upkeep and privacy. Be realistic about cleaning and refilling. For cameras and connected products, review account security, cloud storage, permissions, and update support.
  6. Introduce it gradually. Let the pet investigate and acclimate at its own pace. Keep ordinary food, water, or litter options available while checking that the new device works and is accepted.

Build a dependable setup with backups

  • Pair a GPS tracker with a secure collar, current ID tag, and registered microchip.
  • Pair an automatic feeder with a backup meal plan and fresh water.
  • Use a camera for observation, but arrange a person to check on a pet that needs hands-on care.
  • Keep a conventional litter box available beside an automated one.
  • Keep a regular water bowl alongside a fountain.

Technology earns its place when it makes care more reliable without becoming the single point of failure. Choose for the animal in front of you, and keep a simple backup for anything essential.
