Research models can classify calls, find patterns and suggest contexts. Those are meaningful advances, but they are not the same as knowing what a pet means. This assessment reflects evidence available as of August 18, 2026.
What would it mean to “translate” a pet?
The word translate can describe several different tasks. A system that detects a bark has not necessarily identified the dog; one that recognizes a call type has not necessarily inferred its purpose. A useful distinction is:
- Detection: Is an animal vocalization present?
- Identification: Which species—or individual animal—made it?
- Classification: Does the sound resemble a known call type, such as an alarm, contact or distress call?
- Context prediction: What situation or behavior tends to accompany the sound?
- Meaning inference: What does the sound appear to accomplish?
- Translation or communication: Can the system reliably map a signal to a stable message, or exchange signals the animal understands?
AI has made progress on detection, identification, classification and pattern discovery. A model that predicts “this sound is often recorded when another animal is nearby” has not established that the animal is saying “There is another animal.” Correlation can be informative without being a decoded message.
What AI had achieved by the end of 2025
NatureLM-audio: analyzing animal recordings
Earth Species Project describes NatureLM-audio as an audio-language model built for bioacoustics and related sound tasks. Its work includes identifying species and call types, detecting and counting sounds, producing captions, and answering natural-language questions about recordings. The project says the model combines a fine-tuned BEATs audio encoder with Llama 3.1 8B Instruct; it also made code, datasets and an interactive demo available, according to its 2025 annual report.

Earth Species Project reported 99% accuracy at distinguishing frogs from non-frogs and 82% accuracy identifying the focal species among the five most-recorded frogs in a FrogID evaluation. Those results concern defined frog-recognition tasks. They do not show that the model can interpret a particular dog’s bark or a cat’s meow as a sentence. A generated caption can make a recording easier to inspect, but it is not automatically a ground-truth account of an animal’s intention.
DolphinGemma: modeling sound sequences, not translating dolphins
Google announced DolphinGemma on April 14, 2025. The approximately 400-million-parameter model was trained on recordings of wild Atlantic spotted dolphins collected by the Wild Dolphin Project and designed to help researchers identify recurring acoustic patterns and predict likely next sounds. Google describes it as a research tool for investigating structure and possible meaning—not a finished dolphin-to-human translator.
A separate effort called CHAT explores synthetic whistles associated with objects such as toys or vegetation. That is an attempt to establish a limited shared vocabulary: researchers introduce signals and investigate whether dolphins learn or respond to them. It differs from decoding an existing natural communication system, just as teaching a pet a button routine differs from translating its spontaneous vocalizations.

Project CETI: a longer path from pattern to evidence
Project CETI studies sperm whales in Dominica. Its approach links large-scale recordings with whale movements and behavior, then uses machine learning to analyze patterns and investigate possible interpretations. The project describes playback studies as a way to test interpretations: researchers can play a signal and examine whether animals respond in a predicted, repeatable way. That kind of validation is essential. A plausible model output alone cannot establish meaning.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Species-specific tools also show what bioacoustics AI can do without being translators. For example, BirdNET identifies bird sounds and supports ecological monitoring; its stated coverage is more than 6,000 species. Recognition at that scale is valuable, but it is not equivalent to translating a bird’s call into a human sentence.
Why a dog-or-cat translator is especially difficult
Researchers generally have recordings, not a verified dictionary. Human translation systems can learn from huge collections of text paired across languages. Animal recordings are much harder to label with independently confirmed meanings. As Nature’s explainer on animal communication notes, scientists do not begin with a bilingual corpus that says what each sound means.

Sound is only one part of a pet’s behavior. Posture, facial expression, tail and ear position, distance, nearby people or animals, food, toys, time of day, health and learned household routines can all change how a vocalization should be interpreted. A microphone-only model may miss the context that separates a greeting from a warning, a request from attention-seeking, or a familiar sound from a sign of distress.
There is also individual variation. Dogs and cats do not all use identical repertoires; age, breed, socialization, training, environment and personality may matter. A model trained on one group may not work well for another animal or household. And animal communication need not map neatly onto human sentences: a sound may reliably accompany a situation without functioning as a word for it.
Generative AI adds a particular risk. It can produce a fluent, emotionally compelling caption even when the recording supports only a broad classification—or several possible explanations. Fluency is not evidence of understanding.

What would count as convincing evidence?
A serious claim of translation needs more than a demonstration in which an app labels a sound and the owner recognizes a plausible story. Researchers would need to test whether the interpretation generalizes and whether it predicts behavior:
- Test new animals and situations: Evaluate on pets, locations and contexts absent from training.
- Use blind assessment: People coding the animal’s behavior should not know the model’s prediction.
- Separate sound from context: Change the sound while holding the situation steady, then vary the situation while using similar sounds. This helps reveal what the system is actually responding to.
- Seek behavioral confirmation: Where ethical and appropriate, playback experiments can test whether animals respond consistently to a predicted signal.
- Report uncertainty and errors: A trustworthy system should offer alternatives or say it cannot tell, not assign precise emotions to ambiguous sounds.
- Publish independent, reproducible evaluations: Dataset details, baselines, error rates and negative results matter as much as impressive examples.
Project CETI’s stated interest in playback validation illustrates the gap between finding an acoustic pattern and showing that an interpretation is meaningful to the animal. Without such evidence, a system may be useful for generating research hypotheses without being ready to tell a pet owner what an animal “said.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did the “by 2025” prediction come true?
| Claim | Status by December 31, 2025 |
|---|---|
| AI can detect and classify some animal sounds | Yes, for defined research and identification tasks. |
| AI can find recurring patterns in animal vocalizations | Yes, including species-specific research models. |
| AI can predict likely sound sequences | Demonstrated as a research capability, including in dolphin work. |
| Researchers are exploring limited shared signals | Yes; this is distinct from translating natural animal communication. |
| A consumer can reliably translate ordinary pet sounds into English | Not established in the reviewed evidence. |
| A universal dog-and-cat translator exists | No verified evidence of one in the reviewed primary sources. |
The prediction was partly right about progress in listening technology and wrong if it promised an everyday pet-to-English translator by the end of 2025. That conclusion is limited to the evidence reviewed here; it does not mean animal communication is impossible to study or that future systems cannot improve.

What pet owners can use now
Observe patterns instead of treating an app’s caption as a verdict. If you want to understand a recurring sound, note what happened just before it, the animal’s posture and movement, what happened afterward, and whether the behavior repeats in the same circumstances. A record of repeated situations may help you identify a routine or give a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional useful context. It does not prove the animal is using a human-like word.
A sudden or sustained change in barking, whining, meowing, hissing or yowling can have medical, environmental or behavioral causes. Pain, illness, anxiety and conflict can affect vocal behavior. Do not use an AI label to rule out a health problem or delay veterinary advice.
Button products are a different kind of tool. FluentPet sells sound buttons and HexTiles that play human-selected words or phrases when a pet presses them; its offerings include teaching resources and an app-integrated option. A pet may learn to use a button to request something or attract attention, but this is a human-designed, trained communication aid—not automatic translation of barking or meowing. It is best approached as gradual learning and observation, not proof that the pet has acquired a human vocabulary.
For bird identification or wildlife research, tools such as BirdNET serve a specific purpose: recognizing likely bird species from sound. NatureLM-audio is a research-oriented animal-sound analysis model, while DolphinGemma is focused on Atlantic spotted dolphin research. Neither is a general consumer dog-or-cat translator.

Questions to ask before trusting a “pet translator” claim
- Which species and populations was the system trained and tested on?
- Are labels tied to observed behavior, or are they simply human guesses about recordings?
- Has anyone independent of the developer evaluated it?
- Does it distinguish recognition and context prediction from claims about meaning?
- Does it show uncertainty and explain when it cannot tell?
- Does it use video or other context, and what household data does it store or upload?
- Could a false reassuring result cause an owner to miss pain, distress or illness?
Be especially cautious of products that confidently assign a pet a specific emotion, request or medical state without publishing species-specific validation. A system can be entertaining or useful for organizing observations while still being a poor basis for consequential decisions.
The outlook
The genuine breakthrough is not that AI has turned barking into English. It is that researchers have new ways to sift through large collections of animal sounds, identify structure and formulate testable questions. The next important step is not a more convincing caption; it is stronger evidence that a proposed interpretation predicts how animals behave across new individuals and contexts.
