Yes: Omron’s NeCoRo was a genuine 2001 rival to Sony’s AIBO in the premium robotic-pet market, but it was not an AIBO equivalent. The furry cat-shaped robot was built for touch, sound and simulated temperament; Sony’s doglike ERS-210 walked, recognized voice commands, took photos and supported a broader software ecosystem.
Why NeCoRo and AIBO were competitors
Sony introduced AIBO in 1999 as a consumer entertainment robot designed to behave like a companion. Two years later, Omron entered the same emerging category with NeCoRo, a robotic cat intended to invite interaction and attachment. Both were premium electronic pets whose appeal depended on responsive behavior rather than practical household work. Contemporary coverage explicitly framed NeCoRo as competition for AIBO (EE Times).
The comparison is meaningful at the level of audience, price bracket and emotional proposition. It becomes misleading if “competitor” is taken to mean that NeCoRo could do everything AIBO could.
What Omron’s NeCoRo was
Omron announced NeCoRo, model EPA-R01, on October 16, 2001, and scheduled its Japanese launch for November 20. The company announced a limited production run of 5,000 units at ¥185,000. It was initially a Japan-only release, with no overseas rollout planned at the time because Omron lacked an overseas support system (ASCII.jp; EE Times).

Inspired by an American Shorthair, NeCoRo came in gray or brown and wore artificial acrylic fur. It measured about 260 × 160 × 320 mm, excluding its tail, according to ITmedia; EE Times reported a weight of about 1.6 kg (EE Times). Its intended appeal was close and tactile: stroke it, hear catlike sounds, and watch it react with movements and expressions.
How NeCoRo sensed and responded
NeCoRo had tactile sensors in its head, chin and back, a microphone in its head, an image sensor in its nose, and acceleration sensors that helped it detect posture and movement. Contemporary reports describe 48 cat sounds and six emotional expressions. They also describe roughly 15 articulated movements or degrees of freedom; terminology varies between sources, so those figures should not be treated as a single precisely defined mechanical specification (EE Times; ITmedia).

Gentle stroking could prompt an affectionate response; rough treatment could produce angry or defensive behavior. NeCoRo could move its eyelids, ears, mouth, neck, legs and tail, but it did not walk. ITmedia reported that it responded to voice waveforms, not that it understood spoken words in the ordinary sense (ITmedia).
MaC meant simulated emotion, not consciousness
Omron called NeCoRo’s behavior system MaC, short for “Mind and Consciousness.” The name described a proprietary emotion-generation model, not evidence of biological feelings or philosophical consciousness. In the reported design, sensors registered how the robot was being handled; recognition and internal emotional states influenced one another; and the resulting state shaped sounds, expressions and behavior. Repeated interactions could make its apparent temperament seem more affectionate or more self-willed (ASCII.jp).

NeCoRo versus Sony AIBO ERS-210
The relevant contemporary comparison is Sony’s doglike ERS-210, announced in October 2000—not the earlier ERS-110 or today’s ERS-1000. Sony’s announcement described the ERS-210 as an autonomous walking robot with 20 degrees of freedom, sensors, voice recognition and photography with the appropriate software. Its AIBO-ware software, including AIBO Life, expanded its behavior; Sony said AIBO Life enabled recognition of about 50 simple words. Other software and wireless LAN options broadened the platform (Sony).
| Category | Omron NeCoRo EPA-R01 | Sony AIBO ERS-210 |
|---|---|---|
| Animal design | Furry cat inspired by an American Shorthair | Doglike robot |
| Launch | Announced October 16, 2001; Japanese sales scheduled for November 20, 2001 | Announced October 2000; orders began November 16, 2000 |
| Japanese launch price | ¥185,000 | ¥150,000 before tax |
| Production and availability | Announced 5,000-unit limited run; initial launch in Japan | Sony said it would make units to fill orders, with no order-period or quantity limit |
| Movement | Moved body parts but did not walk | Autonomous four-legged walking |
| Interaction | Touch, sounds, posture and emotion-like expressions | Touch, voice and name recognition, autonomous behavior and photography with relevant software |
| Software and extensibility | Omron’s MaC behavioral model; no comparable consumer programming ecosystem is established in the cited sources | AIBO-ware, including AIBO Life, plus software and wireless options |
| International reach | Japan-only initial launch; overseas rollout was not planned at the time | Sony announced sales in Japan, the United States and multiple European markets |
The Japanese launch figures make NeCoRo ¥35,000 more expensive than the ERS-210’s ¥150,000 pre-tax base price. That is a comparison of the cited historical prices, not a claim that the products had identical costs: software and accessories could add to AIBO’s total. Sony also listed a US ERS-210 price of $1,500 before tax. The contemporary dollar conversion sometimes given for NeCoRo reflects 2001, not an inflation-adjusted present-day price (Sony; ASCII.jp; EE Times).

Why Omron chose fur instead of walking
NeCoRo was not simply AIBO with a cat body. Omron placed the emphasis on the physical sensation of petting: its project leader said fur was essential because touch was the first form of communication. The robot’s stationary design concentrated on stroking, catlike vocalizations, posture and expression instead of the walking autonomy, learning and software extensions that defined much of AIBO’s appeal (EE Times).
That choice offered a more petlike surface and a cat-centered interaction, but less visible autonomy and experimentation. NeCoRo’s fur could make contact feel more intimate; it could also make a largely stationary, moving plush figure seem uncanny rather than lifelike. AIBO was less physically like a real animal but more capable of exploring its surroundings.

Was NeCoRo really an AIBO rival?
- As a category rival: yes. Both targeted consumers looking for an expensive robotic companion rather than a conventional toy.
- As a price rival: partly. NeCoRo occupied a similar premium market, though its announced Japanese price was higher than the ERS-210’s pre-tax base price.
- As a feature-for-feature substitute: no. NeCoRo did not walk and had no comparable AIBO-ware platform established in the cited sources.
The most useful distinction is that the two robots offered different ideas of companionship: AIBO acted like a mobile artificial dog, while NeCoRo tried to make a robot feel catlike through fur, touch and responsive temperament.
What happened to NeCoRo—and what came next for AIBO
NeCoRo was announced as a limited Japan-only product in 2001. It does not appear among current Omron products, and no current official NeCoRo sales or support page is available in the cited material. That does not establish the exact date sales ended, how many units were ultimately made or whether the announced run sold out.
Sony’s original AIBO business also had an end: Sony says production stopped in 2006 and post-sale services ended in 2014. The company revived the brand with a new-generation robot in 2017 and announced the ERS-1000 for release in 2018 (Sony). This modern, cloud-connected aibo is a different product from the ERS-210. Sony’s current US product page says an AI Cloud Plan subscription is required for full use of certain My aibo features; it also lists regional restrictions, including Illinois and Baltimore, Maryland (Sony).
