Rover acquired European dog-care marketplace Gudog on April 29, 2025, as it launched services in Denmark and Ireland and planned further expansion. The purchase price was not disclosed. The deal’s practical result is now clearer than its financial impact: Gudog users and activity were moved to Rover, and new Gudog activity ended on July 29, 2025.
What Rover acquired
Founded in 2015 by Timothy McElroy and Loly Garrido, Gudog connected dog owners with sitters and walkers. At the time of the acquisition announcement, Rover said Gudog had a network of about 20,000 sitters and walkers across the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Gudog had recorded more than one million service days booked and approximately 300,000 pet-parent reviews, according to Rover’s announcement.
Those figures describe Gudog’s network and activity, not Rover’s. Gudog’s later notice to customers said Rover’s wider network included more than 300,000 approved sitters and walkers and more than six million pet parents; those are Rover figures cited in the Gudog transition notice.
The value was not just a recognizable name. A marketplace needs enough nearby providers to give customers a choice, and enough customers to make the platform worthwhile for providers. Gudog’s local supply, reviews and booking history gave Rover an existing base to integrate rather than building every market from scratch. That is the strategic rationale; the public announcements do not quantify any cost savings or resulting revenue.

Why Rover wanted a stronger European foothold
Rover said Europe was its fastest-growing geography for first-time customers and that European bookings represented about 16% of its global new bookings in 2024. It also estimated a $6.5 billion long-term opportunity in the markets it was targeting. Both figures are company statements, not independently verified market measurements.
Alongside the acquisition, Rover announced launches in Denmark and Ireland and said it planned to enter Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Poland and Belgium. It projected an additional $15 million of European investment over five years and said its global footprint would reach 17 countries by the end of 2025. These were plans and estimates, not proof of returns or market share.

Rover’s January 2026 Meowtel announcement listed its European markets as the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Poland and Switzerland. That later list indicates that the countries named in the 2025 expansion plan were included in Rover’s stated footprint by then; it does not establish how many sitters were active in each place or whether the service was equally available in every city.
The acquisition also fits a longer pattern. Rover acquired DogBuddy in 2018 to accelerate its European growth, then acquired Cat in a Flat in October 2024. In January 2026, it announced the acquisition of North American cat-sitting platform Meowtel. Together, these deals show a strategy of combining regional marketplaces with acquisitions that add a pet-care category, rather than relying only on organic launches. What happened to Gudog users and sitters
Gudog’s transition notice said account details, upcoming bookings and chat history would move to Rover, while past bookings and reviews would be preserved. Users were to receive personalized links to activate Rover accounts. The notice described the transition as seamless, but that characterization is Gudog’s; the public materials do not provide an independent audit of how completely every profile, review, message or booking transferred.
A later Digital Services Act disclosure records that Gudog was acquired on April 29, 2025, and that new user activity ceased on July 29, 2025, following migration to Rover. It also reports an average of 22,342 monthly active EU recipients in Gudog’s final six-month reporting period. That is a regulatory measure of EU recipients, not Gudog’s total global user count.

For former Gudog customers and providers, the published transition information does not settle every account-specific question. It does not independently confirm whether reviews transferred one-for-one, what terms governed each pre-existing booking, or how unresolved complaints, refunds and claims were handled. Nor does it establish whether historical messages and booking records remain accessible to every user. Anyone dealing with an open booking, payment or dispute should check their account and contact Rover directly rather than assume the answer from the general migration notice.

Rover said Gudog users would gain access to its technology, services and support. The broader service mix can matter to customers who want more than dog walking or boarding: Rover lists services such as house sitting, daycare and drop-in visits, as well as cat care. For Rover, bringing users into one platform could make it easier to cross-sell services and apply common payment, support and safety systems. These are plausible benefits of integration, not evidence that every Gudog customer used the added services or experienced better support.

Consolidating the marketplace also creates trade-offs. A familiar local brand can lose visibility when its users move to a larger platform. Provider rankings, fees, cancellation terms and customer discovery may change, and the available public statements do not establish how each of those worked for each former Gudog account. A larger total network does not guarantee a suitable sitter in a particular neighborhood; actual choice depends on local supply, service type and dates.
How to assess Rover in your area
If you are a pet owner
- Search your city and required dates rather than relying on a country launch announcement. Compare recent reviews for the specific service you need, such as boarding, house sitting, daycare, walking or drop-in visits.
- Check the full checkout total, cancellation terms and the sitter’s availability before booking. Fees vary by market, so do not assume a figure quoted for one country applies elsewhere.
- Read the applicable country’s guarantee and claims terms. Rover said its European guarantee could reimburse eligible veterinary expenses up to €25,000, but that is not comprehensive pet insurance or unconditional coverage; eligibility, exclusions and procedures matter.
- If you previously used Gudog, confirm that your account, reviews and booking details appear correctly in Rover before relying on them for a new booking.
If you are a sitter or walker
- Compare expected net earnings, not just the listed rate. Rover’s U.S. help page says owners pay an 11% booking fee and providers generally retain 80%; UK/Ireland guidance says the owner fee is 15%, capped at €49 per booking, and sitters generally retain 85%. These are market-specific help-page figures, not a Europe-wide rate. See the U.S. fee guidance and UK/Ireland fee guidance and verify the terms shown for your account.
- Ask Rover to clarify any missing reviews, repeat-client history, profile details or verification status after migration. The public transition notice promises preservation of some information but does not document each user’s outcome.
- Check local tax and reporting obligations, including any applicable DAC7 requirements, and review payout and cancellation terms before accepting bookings.
Rover’s U.S. provider guidance says profile-review fees range from $49 to $79 depending on location. That is a U.S.-specific figure; it should not be treated as the fee for signing up in Europe. Rover publishes country-specific provider pages, including Ireland and Denmark.
What the deal does—and does not—show
Gudog gave Rover a substantial local network by the standards disclosed in the announcement, and the subsequent migration made Rover the destination for Gudog’s users rather than leaving two independently bookable marketplaces. That supports the conclusion that the acquisition was intended to speed European expansion and consolidate operations.
It does not show that Rover bought Gudog for a particular price, that Gudog added a known amount of revenue or profit, or that migrated customers and sitters stayed. The announcements also do not establish a return on the planned investment, market dominance in any European country, or country-level market share. Those outcomes cannot be inferred from network size, a launch list or management’s opportunity estimate.
