Teach swimming gradually and let your dog choose to approach the water. Begin in calm, shallow water with a properly fitted dog life jacket, reward relaxed exploration, and move deeper only while your dog remains comfortable. Stay close, supervise continuously, and teach your dog how to get back out. Never push, pull, or throw a hesitant dog into the water.
Can all dogs swim?
No. Some dogs may paddle naturally, but swimming ability and comfort vary between individuals; breed tendencies are not a guarantee. Even a dog that can paddle may tire, panic, or fail to find a safe exit. Treat swimming as a learned activity, not proof that a dog is safe around water.
Ask your veterinarian before starting if your dog has a health or mobility concern. VCA advises checking first when heart or lung disease could make water activity unsafe, and PetMD recommends veterinary guidance before introducing senior dogs with underlying health or mobility issues. See VCA’s guidance on water sports for dogs and PetMD’s advice on teaching a dog to swim.
Choose a safe place to learn
Pick a setting where you can stay within arm’s reach and your dog can enter and leave without struggling. For a pool, that means accessible steps or a dog-friendly ramp. For a lake, pond, or beach, look for a gradual, stable entry and exit, and check local water-quality advisories before you go.

The American Animal Hospital Association’s water-safety guidance, updated June 11, 2026, covers risks in pools and natural water. Conditions can change, so check current local advisories rather than relying on a past visit.
Get your dog comfortable with flotation gear
Use a dog life jacket while your dog is learning. VCA recommends a life jacket for beginner swimmers; AAHA advises choosing one that fits snugly without restricting movement and has a sturdy handle for spotting or lifting your dog. A bright or reflective color can also make your dog easier to see.

Let your dog wear the jacket on dry land or near the water before the first lesson. Check that it stays secure and allows comfortable movement. The handle is for assistance, not a reason to lift or carry your dog by the jacket unnecessarily. A flotation aid is backup—not a substitute for staying close and watching continuously.
A leash can be hazardous in the water if it snags. Do not leave one attached where it could catch on an obstacle. For equipment considerations, see VCA’s guide to teaching a dog to swim.

Introduce water in small, voluntary steps
- Start at the edge. Let your dog approach and investigate at its own pace. Praise calm interest; do not lure it farther than it wants to go.
- Reward small signs of comfort. Offer praise, a treat, or an optional floating toy for approaching the water or wetting its paws. Use a toy that floats and does not become waterlogged; it is a reward, not safety equipment.
- Stay in the shallows at first. Stand beside your dog and invite it a little farther only while it remains relaxed. Keep the life jacket on and make sure the dog can return to land easily.
- Build gradually over visits. Increase depth and time in small increments across sessions, with breaks. If your dog hesitates, return to shallower water or land and let it settle; do not force the next step.
- Stop when your dog is tired or distressed. End the lesson and help your dog leave the water if you see fatigue, fear, or difficulty. A fixed lesson length or temperature rule is not a universal veterinary standard; respond to the conditions and your individual dog’s comfort and stamina.
Throwing a dog into the water can frighten it rather than teach it. Michele Godlevski, a certified professional dog trainer and canine behavior consultant, told the American Kennel Club that throwing a puppy or young dog in the water “may, in fact, damage the dog’s courage about swimming for life.” Read the AKC article on whether dogs can swim and how to teach them.

- In a pool: Show your dog the steps or ramp, then practice reaching that exit from different parts of the pool. Do not assume it will find the way out on its own.
- In natural water: Use an entry and exit the dog can reach without fighting a current or climbing a steep, unstable bank.
Keep supervising closely even after your dog can swim and locate the exit: fatigue, panic, or changing water conditions can still create danger.
Rinse, dry, and watch your dog afterward
After swimming, offer fresh drinking water, rinse your dog with fresh water to remove pool chemicals or natural-water irritants, and dry it—especially around the ears, paws, and skin folds. Watch for unusual signs after the outing, including vomiting, coughing, lethargy, or changes in breathing. Contact a veterinarian if you are concerned.
