8 Places Where Venomous Snakes and Snakebite Risk Are Especially Significant

There is no reliable global ranking of “snake infestations.” These eight countries and regions are documented settings of medically important snakes or substantial modeled snakebite burden, with the evidence and limits for each explained.

The phrase “8 Places Around The World With The Most Venomous Snake Infestations” suggests a precise global ranking, but no comparable dataset measures “infestation.” Snake abundance, number of species, venom potency, bites, envenomings and deaths produce different lists. The eight settings below are therefore documented areas of substantial medically important snake presence or snakebite burden—not a definitive top eight.

Snakebite envenoming is concentrated mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that snakes bite about 5.4 million people each year, causing 1.8–2.7 million envenomings and 81,410–137,880 deaths annually (WHO, 2026). These are estimates; many cases never reach a health facility and are not recorded.

How to interpret the eight settings

The examples use different evidence types, which are labeled rather than combined into an invented score. A species-range description shows where medically important snakes occur; a mortality rate describes modeled human deaths for a specified period. Neither is a measure of venom potency or snake density.

Setting Primary evidence What it does—and does not—show
India Modeled mortality context, 1990–2019 Large absolute public-health burden; not a current snake count
Somalia 2019 modeled age-standardized death rate: 4.5 per 100,000 Per-capita mortality estimate for one year; not a live surveillance count
Central African Republic 2019 modeled age-standardized death rate: 3.4 per 100,000 Same limitations as above
Eritrea 2019 modeled age-standardized death rate: 2.9 per 100,000 Same limitations as above
South and Southeast Asia Documented ranges of cobras, kraits, Russell’s vipers and Malayan pit vipers Regional species presence and exposure; no single regional rate
Sub-Saharan Africa Documented ranges of carpet vipers, puff adders and mambas Broad ecological distribution; burden varies sharply by country and locality
Latin America Bothrops lance-headed vipers and rattlesnakes Important causes of bites, disability and death across parts of the region
Papua New Guinea Papuan taipans and country-specific mortality context Deaths are concentrated here within the Australia–New Guinea comparison described by WHO

Eight settings with major venomous-snake or snakebite significance

1. India

India is a major setting for human snakebite burden. A global mortality analysis covering 1990–2019 found that India had the greatest absolute decrease in age-standardized snakebite death rate over that period. That finding describes modeled change, not a current national ranking, and it cannot be converted into a measure of how many venomous snakes live in the country.

Risk differs among Indian states and districts according to local species, farming and outdoor work, housing, monsoon or seasonal conditions, transport and access to antivenom-equipped facilities.

2. Somalia

For 2019, the same global analysis estimated an age-standardized snakebite death rate of 4.5 per 100,000 in Somalia. “Age-standardized” adjusts the modeled rate to a standard population so places can be compared more fairly; it is not a tally of confirmed deaths. Health-service access and incomplete reporting can make the real burden difficult to measure.

3. Central African Republic

The analysis estimated a 2019 age-standardized snakebite death rate of 3.4 per 100,000 in the Central African Republic. This is a modeled estimate for that year, not evidence that every part of the country has the same risk. Rural occupation, distance to treatment and the local distribution of medically important snakes all matter.

4. Eritrea

Eritrea’s modeled 2019 age-standardized death rate was 2.9 per 100,000. As with the other mortality figures, the estimate covers a defined period and method; it should not be presented as a current count or as proof of unusually high snake abundance.

5. South and Southeast Asia

WHO identifies several important bite-causing groups across South and Southeast Asia, including cobras, kraits, Russell’s vipers and Malayan pit vipers. Kraits may enter dwellings at night and bite people sleeping on floor mats, making housing and sleeping arrangements part of the risk profile.

Country and community conditions vary widely. Agricultural work, walking barefoot, nighttime movement, flooding and delays in reaching a facility can increase danger even where snake populations are not measured.

Effectiveness will vary depending upon where the bite or sting occurred and how deep it is. Always seek professional medical attention immediately

6. Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa contains medically important carpet vipers, puff adders and mambas. WHO describes puff adders as broadly distributed through sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, while mambas occupy a range of sub-Saharan habitats. “Broadly distributed” does not mean evenly abundant, and national statistics are often incomplete.

The public-health outcome depends on exposure and treatment as much as on species. A bite in a remote area without rapid transport or appropriate antivenom can be more dangerous than a bite in a well-served location.

7. Latin America

Lance-headed vipers of the genus Bothrops are a major cause of snakebite death and disability across much of Latin America. Rattlesnakes also occur in the Americas. The relevant risk is local: forest, pasture and agricultural work, seasonal activity, housing and the time needed to reach care determine how often bites become severe.

8. Papua New Guinea

WHO distinguishes Papua New Guinea from Australia in its regional discussion: most deaths in the Australia–New Guinea comparison occur in Papua New Guinea and are caused by Papuan taipans. This is a country-specific mortality context, not a claim that Papuan taipans are the world’s most venomous snakes by every laboratory measure.

Why Australia should not be labeled the world’s “most infested”

Australia is famous for highly venomous snakes, including brown snakes and taipans, but WHO’s FAQ says bites in Australia are very rare. Species venom potency and human bite burden are different measurements. A place can contain exceptionally potent venom without recording the greatest number of bites or deaths.

What actually determines snakebite risk?

  • Exposure: farming, herding, forestry, walking and sleeping arrangements bring people into contact with snakes.
  • Housing: gaps, floor sleeping and nearby debris or vegetation can allow snakes into living areas.
  • Time and season: nighttime activity, rain, harvest periods and flooding can change encounter rates.
  • Health-system access: transport, trained staff, diagnostics and regionally appropriate antivenom strongly affect outcomes.
  • Surveillance: deaths and bites treated outside formal facilities may never enter national statistics.

Practical ways to reduce exposure

  • Wear sturdy footwear for outdoor work and use protective gaiters where local guidance considers them appropriate.
  • Clear rubbish, stacked materials and dense vegetation from paths and immediately around homes.
  • Use a light when walking outside after dark.
  • Improve doors, floors and other barriers that prevent snakes entering dwellings.
  • Where snakes may enter sleeping areas, WHO describes a raised sleeping platform and a well-tucked mosquito net as useful precautions.

These measures reduce opportunities for contact but cannot guarantee safety, especially in rural or heavily vegetated environments.

What to do after a suspected snakebite

Arrange prompt transport to a suitable health facility. Antivenom selection depends on the snakes endemic to that region, and treatment requires clinical assessment. Do not rely on folk remedies, attempt to catch the snake or assume that one universal first-aid technique is safe everywhere. WHO warns that some first-aid practices are ineffective or dangerous and may delay definitive care. Follow current local emergency instructions while seeking medical help.

Bottom line

There is no defensible global ranking of eight places with the “most venomous snake infestations.” India, parts of South and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Papua New Guinea and several countries with high modeled mortality are important snakebite settings for different reasons. Human risk reflects species, exposure, living and working conditions, reporting and access to timely treatment—not venom potency alone.
