Colossal Biosciences’ January 2025 announcement of a $200 million financing was a research investment, not evidence that a woolly mammoth, thylacine or dodo has been recreated. The company is pursuing genetically engineered proxies for the extinct animals, using different genome-editing and reproductive technologies for each species.
The headline also needs an update: Colossal said in September 2025 that it had raised another $120 million, bringing the Series C total to $320 million. The figures describe capital and valuation, while the biological outcomes remain experimental and largely company-reported.
What the $200 million announcement actually covered
Colossal announced the initial $200 million Series C in January 2025. Axios reported that TWG Global led the financing and that it valued the company at $10.2 billion post-money. In September 2025, Colossal said the round had expanded by another $120 million, for a stated total of $320 million and a $10.32 billion valuation.
| Announcement | Amount | Valuation | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial Series C | $200 million | $10.2 billion post-money | Colossal announcement; valuation reported by Axios, January 2025 |
| Additional financing | $120 million | $10.32 billion | Colossal statement reported through Business Wire, September 2025 |
| Series C total after the addition | $320 million | $10.32 billion | Colossal statement, September 2025 |
Coverage of the original financing described Colossal as pre-revenue at that time. That is a historical description of the 2025 financing story, not a current financial statement.

What “de-extinction” means in Colossal’s projects
Colossal’s own definition is closer to genetic reconstruction than literal resurrection. Its FAQ says the company uses “CRISPR-based genetic engineering and other technologies to reproduce close approximations (not clones) of extinct species’ genomes in order to restore the species to life.”
For the mammoth, the company describes its objective as “a cold-resistant elephant with all of the core biological traits of the woolly mammoth.” That would be an engineered elephant carrying selected mammoth-associated traits, not an exact genetic or historical duplicate of an individual mammoth.
This distinction matters because the extinct genomes are incomplete or difficult to interpret, and because changing DNA does not automatically recreate an extinct animal’s development, behavior, microbiome or ecological relationships. Colossal also acknowledges that predictions about the effects of mutations, adaptation and speciation are imperfect.

How the mammoth, thylacine and dodo programs differ
| Program | Stated biological approach | Host or surrogate issue | Main unresolved step described by Colossal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woolly mammoth | Sequence mammoth genomes, select traits associated with cold adaptation and edit an elephant relative’s cells. | Gestation would use an elephant relative. | Moving from edited cells to a viable pregnancy and healthy offspring with the intended traits. |
| Thylacine | Sequence the thylacine and a living dasyurid relative, establish marsupial cell lines and edit hundreds of genomic loci. | A surrogate and an external-pouch development system are required. | Making the edited genome function through marsupial development, including the surrogate and pouch stages. |
| Dodo | Compare dodo and host genomes, predict mutations linked to physical traits and use a surrogate system. | The company has described a surrogate system rather than a conventional bird-cloning route. | Predicting which edits produce the desired phenotype and then raising viable birds. |
Woolly mammoth: an engineered elephant proxy
Colossal’s mammoth workflow starts with genome sequencing and analysis, followed by editing in elephant-related cells. The intended endpoint is an elephant that can tolerate cold and expresses a set of traits associated with mammoths. The company’s project page calls this a “resurrection” but immediately qualifies it as a cold-resistant elephant with mammoth biological traits.

The reproductive problem is separate from the editing problem: an edited cell or embryo would still need to develop into a healthy animal, with an elephant relative serving as the gestational host described by the company.
Thylacine: a marsupial development challenge
The thylacine plan uses a living dasyurid relative as a source of comparative biological information and as part of the cell-line strategy. Colossal says it is establishing marsupial cell lines and editing hundreds of loci into a host genome.

Marsupial reproduction adds stages that do not map neatly onto elephant or bird work. The company has described both a surrogate and an external-pouch stage, so success would require the edited animal to develop correctly across those environments, not merely to carry a thylacine-like sequence.
Dodo: predicting traits in a living bird
For the dodo, Colossal says it will compare the extinct bird’s genome with that of a living host, predict mutations associated with visible traits and use a surrogate system. The company has not presented those predictions as certain; its FAQ cautions that mutation effects and evolutionary outcomes are difficult to forecast.

What progress has been publicly reported
Artificial-egg work
In 2026, Colossal said 26 chickens had hatched using its artificial-egg system, describing the work as a step toward dodo and moa research. The announcement included no peer-reviewed paper and no comparative hatch-rate data. The number is therefore a company-reported milestone in a supporting technology, not evidence that a dodo embryo has been produced.
Artificial-womb work with fat-tailed dunnarts
In May 2026, Colossal reported progress across all three stages of an artificial-womb system using fat-tailed dunnarts. The company said it had bridged the transition between stages two and three, while identifying the transition between stages one and two as the final remaining step.
Those results were reported by Colossal and were not independently verified in the available reporting. Dunnart progress may inform marsupial development, but it is not the same as producing a thylacine.

What has not been demonstrated
- No source establishes that Colossal has produced a living woolly mammoth, thylacine or dodo.
- No source establishes that an engineered proxy would be behaviorally, ecologically or genetically equivalent to the extinct species.
- The reported bird and artificial-womb milestones do not include the independent comparative data needed to assess their success rates.
Why scientists remain cautious
The Associated Press reported scientists’ skepticism about both the feasibility and the desirability of de-extinction. The concerns are not proof that Colossal’s projects cannot work, but they underscore the distance between a planned genome-editing program and a viable animal that could survive and function in an ecosystem.
Each project combines uncertain genomic interpretation with difficult reproductive biology. A mutation that appears associated with a mammoth coat, a thylacine feature or a dodo body plan may have effects that are hard to predict in a different genome or developmental environment. Colossal itself says its forecasts about mutation effects, adaptation and speciation are imperfect.
The available sources do not provide a comprehensive scientific consensus, an independently audited probability of success or a topic-specific statistic showing a conservation benefit. It is therefore more accurate to describe these animals as proposed engineered proxies and the milestones as reported research progress.
How to interpret the financing headline
The $200 million figure signals that investors were willing to fund a large, long-term biotechnology program. It does not measure biological success, confirm the company’s technical claims or show that any extinct species has returned.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe later $120 million disclosure is equally important for accuracy: stories that repeat a $200 million Series C without noting the September 2025 update are describing the original announcement, not the round’s subsequently reported total. The two valuations should also remain tied to their sources and dates—$10.2 billion post-money in Axios’s account of the January financing and $10.32 billion in Colossal’s September update.
For now, Colossal’s work is best understood as three related but technically distinct research programs: an elephant proxy for mammoth traits, a marsupial reconstruction attempt for the thylacine and a bird-genome and surrogate project for the dodo. Funding and reported laboratory steps show ambition and activity; they do not yet show de-extinction in the everyday sense of seeing those extinct animals alive again.
