Project RattleCam’s official livestream shows a prairie-rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) aggregation on private land in northern Colorado. Cal Poly says as many as 2,000 snakes can gather there. The site is remote, its exact location is undisclosed, and it is not open to visitors—watch the den online instead.
Where to watch the rattlesnake livestream
Find the current Colorado feed through Cal Poly’s official Project RattleCam channel. The stream is seasonal: prairie rattlesnakes disperse or hibernate, so the camera may be offline at some times of year. Check the channel for its present status rather than relying on an old recording or a reposted link.
The camera is solar-powered and operates without researchers entering the den. That distance is deliberate: remote observation lets the team study wild snakes while minimizing disturbance.
Are there really thousands of snakes in one den?
Yes. Cal Poly Biological Sciences reported in 2024 that the northern Colorado rookery can hold up to 2,000 prairie rattlesnakes. An earlier Cal Poly project page estimated at least 1,500. “Mega-den” describes an unusually large seasonal aggregation, not a permanent pile of snakes living together year-round.

Prairie rattlesnakes use communal denning sites to survive cold conditions. When temperatures permit, they emerge to bask, move around the rock and soil, and eventually disperse across the surrounding habitat.
What you may see on the live camera
- Basking: Snakes position themselves to warm their bodies, often producing the busiest scenes in the morning and early evening.
- Quiet periods: Activity can drop during the hottest part of the day as snakes avoid overheating and conserve water.
- Social encounters: Individuals may crawl over or alongside one another at the aggregation.
- Rainwater drinking: Viewers can sometimes see snakes collect and drink water from wet surfaces after rain.
- Predators and visitors: Other wildlife occasionally appears, creating useful observations for the research team.
- Births and newborns: The feed has shown young snakes. Project lead Emily Taylor called seeing newborns “a huge privilege and endlessly fascinating” in Cal Poly’s 2026 update.
The snakes are not performing for the camera, and the project does not present them as attacking viewers. The value is seeing undisturbed behavior as it happens.

What Project RattleCam is studying
The livestream is a community-science research system, not simply a wildlife video. Researchers pair camera snapshots with data from a nearby weather station to examine how rattlesnakes maintain body temperature, limit sun exposure and conserve water.
Individual snakes can be recognized by distinctive scale patterns, which function much like fingerprints. Repeated appearances can therefore help researchers distinguish animals and track behavior without capturing them.

Emily Taylor, a Cal Poly biological-sciences professor and the project’s lead, said: “This livestream allows us to collect data on wild rattlesnakes without disturbing them, facilitating unbiased scientific discovery.”
How viewers can contribute from home
Watching is optional; reporting is the scientific contribution. Project RattleCam invites viewers to flag unusual visitors and behaviors in the livestream chat or through the project’s observation-submission forms. A useful report identifies the approximate time, what happened, and where in the camera view it occurred. Do not report guesses as confirmed species or behavior.

Taylor emphasizes that “the public can help us collect data” and that “this isn’t just a camera.” Reports still require scientific review; a viewer’s message is an observation, not automatically a research finding.

Morning and early evening generally offer the best chance of seeing movement because temperatures are more suitable for basking and travel. Around peak sunlight, the image may appear almost still. Weather can change the scene quickly: rain may bring drinking behavior, while cold conditions can keep snakes sheltered.

Because the Colorado aggregation is seasonal, a quiet or unavailable feed does not mean the den has disappeared. Check the official channel for announcements about the live schedule.
Can you visit the mega-den?
No. The den is on private land in a remote part of northern Colorado, and Cal Poly intentionally withholds the exact location. There is no public viewing site described by the project. Trying to locate the den could trespass, disturb the snakes or put people at unnecessary risk. Remote viewing is the safe and responsible option.
How large is the project’s audience?
Cal Poly University Communications and Marketing reported more than 21,300 YouTube subscribers, over 4.4 million views and 350,000 hours of watch time in 2025 figures. The 2024 Colorado installation generated 83 news articles and 13,761 new YouTube subscribers between July and November 2024. Those are time-stamped figures, not a current live counter.
The audience matters because the project pairs public education with research. By replacing fear-based assumptions with observations of feeding, basking, birth and seasonal movement, the livestream gives viewers a more accurate picture of rattlesnake ecology.
