Newer evidence includes a notable Minnesota record of a female with kittens in 2026, while Minnesota’s wildlife agency says most cougar presence farther east remains transient.
What the study actually confirmed
Michelle A. LaRue and colleagues analyzed confirmed cougar locations across 14 states and provinces in Midwestern North America from 1990 through 2008. Their 2012 paper reported 178 confirmations, drawn from evidence such as carcasses, tracks, photographs, video, and DNA. The University of Minnesota’s release says wildlife professionals verified reports and that animals known to have been released from captivity were excluded.
The researchers found that confirmations increased over the study period (r = 0.79, P ≤ 0.001). Counts by jurisdiction ranged from one in Kansas, Michigan, and Ontario to 67 in Nebraska. These are confirmed records, not estimates of how many cougars lived in the region or how many live there now. Read the study abstract.
What the habitat and sex figures mean
Carcasses were the most common confirmation type, with 56 recorded. Among carcass confirmations with known sex, 76% were males. That male-skewed pattern is consistent with young males dispersing long distances from established western populations; it does not show that those animals settled or bred where they were found.

The journal abstract also reports that 79% of confirmations were within 50 km of highly suitable habitat, defined there as forest with steep terrain and low road and human densities. This is a spatial association between records and the study’s habitat category, not a measure of population size. The University of Minnesota release gives a different rounded statistic—about 62% within about 10 miles of suitable habitat—so the figures should not be blended. The university’s 2012 summary also quotes LaRue describing evidence of western-population spread and Midwest re-establishment; the journal abstract’s more cautious interpretation is that recent occurrences were likely due to dispersal and may signal further expansion.
Does a confirmed sighting mean cougars are breeding there?
No. A verified cougar establishes that an animal was present at a particular place and time. A single record—even a carcass, photograph, or DNA sample—does not by itself demonstrate a resident breeding population. Stronger evidence of local establishment would require signs of repeated presence or reproduction, interpreted across a defined area and period.
Rank #2
This distinction matters because a dispersing animal can travel far from an established population. The 2012 study supports increased verified occurrence and likely dispersal into the Midwest, but it does not establish a widespread, self-sustaining population across the jurisdictions it covered.
What newer Minnesota evidence adds
Minnesota DNR reports that a University of Minnesota research project obtained trail-camera video in March 2026 of a female cougar with three kittens northeast of Orr. The agency also cites an Upper Peninsula of Michigan breeding-female observation during winter 2024, and says these records confirm two breeding females farther east than expected.

Those are important breeding observations, not proof that a broad regional population has become established. Minnesota DNR says verified observations, scent-post surveys, and winter tracking still indicate that cougar occurrence in Minnesota and farther east is primarily due to transient animals, mostly males dispersing from western Dakotas and Nebraska. A 2024 individual-based model hindcast nine observed eastern North American recolonization events from the 1990s through 2023, then projected limited expansion by 2100: cougars reclaimed 2.1% of unoccupied range in the model, mostly in boreal Canada. Of jurisdictions unoccupied at the model’s baseline, only Manitoba was supported in every model run as a place that could host a breeding population by 2100.

This is a model projection, not an observation or guarantee. It points to possible, geographically limited recolonization under the model’s assumptions—not a forecast of rapid recovery across the full historical range. The 2024 study is published in Biological Conservation.
Quick Recap
How to read a cougar report
- Check the evidence: distinguish a professionally verified record—such as a carcass, tracks, image, video, or DNA—from an unverified sighting report.
- Check the date and place: a historical record establishes past presence, not current occupancy throughout a state or region.
- Separate presence from establishment: one animal may be transient; evidence of kittens or repeated breeding activity is more directly relevant to reproduction.
- Keep observations separate from projections: field records describe what was documented; models estimate what might happen under specified assumptions.
