Feeding Schedules for Chickens: Starter, Grower, Layer and Broiler Feed

Feed chickens a complete ration matched to age and purpose: starter for chicks, grower or developer for pullets, layer feed near egg production, and a separate broiler program for meat birds.

Use a complete ration matched to a chicken’s age and purpose: chick starter first, grower or developer feed during pullet growth, and layer feed as hens approach or begin laying. Broilers need a separate meat-bird program. Keep feed and clean water available, follow the directions on the feed bag, and adjust timing for the flock’s development rather than treating one age as universal.

Layer-chicken feeding schedule

The table compares two widely used extension schedules. Their cutoffs differ, so the formulation and transition instructions on your product label take priority.

Stage Penn State small-flock guidance University of Minnesota guidance What to use
Chicks Starter from 0–6 weeks; its laying-flock guidance specifies an 18–20% protein starter for the first 6–8 weeks. Starter mash generally for the first 6–8 weeks. Complete chick starter labeled for layer chicks.
Growing pullets Grower from 6–18 weeks; 14–15% protein grower/developer to 18 weeks. Grower or developer after about 8 weeks. Complete pullet grower or developer ration.
Approaching or beginning lay Layer ration from about 18 weeks; a 16–18% protein layer ration is described for hens over 18 weeks. Layer mash when pullets begin laying, at about 20 weeks. Complete layer feed when the label and flock’s maturity indicate the transition.

These are extension recommendations, and the retrieved Penn State pages do not state publication years. Breed, growth rate, lighting, health and the feed’s formulation can change the best transition point. Do not move growing pullets onto layer feed simply because they have reached a calendar age: layer diets contain calcium levels intended for eggshell production.

Chick stage: starter feed

Offer a complete chick starter as the sole principal ration during the first weeks. Starter is formulated for rapid early growth and supplies protein, energy, vitamins and minerals in a balanced ratio. Keep it available so chicks can eat whenever they need it. Do not dilute it with scratch grain, kitchen scraps or treats; those foods cannot replace a complete ration.

Pullet stage: grower or developer feed

Switch to a complete grower or developer ration at the point specified by the bag and your flock adviser. This stage supports frame and muscle development while avoiding the calcium load of layer feed. Penn State’s cited guidance lists 14–15% protein through 18 weeks, but products differ, so use the guaranteed analysis and feeding directions for the specific ration.

Transition to layer feed

Prepare the change when pullets are close to production or the first eggs appear, following the product directions. Penn State’s cited layer guidance lists 16–18% protein for hens over 18 weeks; Minnesota places the change at the onset of laying, around 20 weeks. Make the change gradually if the manufacturer recommends a step-up, and monitor appetite, body condition and egg production.

Broilers require a different schedule

Do not copy an egg-layer schedule onto meat birds. Minnesota guidance describes broiler starter at 22–24% protein for at least the first week and up to week four, followed by a finisher with at least 18–19% protein. Heavier birds may use a developer before a high-energy finisher. Those figures are extension guidance, not a universal prescription for every strain, growth target or commercial feed. Use a broiler-specific program and the manufacturer’s withdrawal or finishing instructions where applicable.

Water is part of the schedule

Provide fresh water continuously, alongside feed. Penn State advises cleaning waterers daily and warns that laying hens without water for more than 12 hours can suffer reduced or stopped egg production. In temperate climates, birds generally drink about 1.5–2 times as much water as feed by volume, but age, heat and other conditions change demand. Check waterers more often during hot weather and whenever bedding or mud can contaminate them.

Calcium and grit for laying hens

Once hens are on a layer program, provide grit and a separate free-choice calcium source such as oyster shell, as recommended by Penn State. Keep the calcium source separate from the complete ration so birds can regulate their intake. The cited guidance does not establish one universal supplement dose; follow the product label and local poultry advice.

Making the schedule work in the coop

Keep feed available without waste

  • Use a feeder that keeps litter and droppings out of the ration.
  • Offer complete feed free choice—available at all times—as Penn State’s small-flock guidance states.
  • Store bags in a dry, rodent-proof place and use feed before it becomes stale, damp or moldy.
  • Give scratch grains and scraps only as optional treats, not as a substitute for starter, grower or layer feed.

Provide enough access

As chicks grow, increase feeder space so smaller birds are not pushed away. Minnesota’s pullet guidance starts at 1 linear inch of feeder space per chick and increases space as birds grow. Treat that figure as a setup reference, then follow the equipment instructions and observe your flock for crowding.

  • Laying hens: complete layer feed.

Read the animal class, age range, protein analysis and feeding directions on the label before buying. A bag marketed for layers is not automatically suitable for chicks or pullets.

How to adjust a schedule safely

  1. Identify whether the flock is being raised for eggs or meat.
  2. Check each bird’s age, growth and— for layer strains—whether laying has started.
  3. Match the current ration to the stage named on the feed label.
  4. Plan the next transition using the label, extension guidance and advice from a poultry veterinarian or local extension service.
  5. Maintain uninterrupted water and observe intake, droppings, body condition and competition at feeders.
  6. Investigate promptly if birds stop eating or drinking, grow unevenly, become lethargic or show a sudden production change.

Common scheduling mistakes

  • Using layer feed for young birds: growing pullets need a grower/developer ration, not a high-calcium layer diet.
  • Keeping chicks on starter indefinitely: change when the label and flock stage call for grower feed.
  • Applying layer timing to broilers: meat birds need broiler-specific nutrient and finishing programs.
  • Replacing complete feed with grain or scraps: treats can unbalance the diet.
  • Overlooking water: a full feeder cannot compensate for dirty or empty drinkers.
  • Assuming one age fits every flock: published extension cutoffs range from roughly 18 to 20 weeks for layer transitions.
