Gujarat’s Lion Population Reaches 891: Why the Increase Is Good and Bad News

Gujarat recorded an estimated 891 Asiatic lions in 2025, a 32.20% rise since 2020. The recovery is encouraging, but expanding range, human conflict, infrastructure hazards and disease vulnerability make it a demanding management challenge.

Gujarat’s official 2025 estimate puts its Asiatic-lion population at 891, up from 674 in 2020. The 217-lion increase (32.20%) confirms a major conservation recovery, but it also expands the risks that come with a larger, more widely dispersed population: encounters with farms and villages, transport deaths, pressure on habitat and exposure to a disease outbreak affecting a population still concentrated in one broad region.

How many Asiatic lions are in Gujarat?

The Gujarat Forest Department’s 2025 estimate recorded 891 Asiatic lions, compared with 674 in 2020. That is an increase of 217 lions, or 32.20%. Adult females rose from 260 to 330, a 26.92% increase. Because adult females are the breeding base, that change is an important sign of reproductive capacity rather than simply short-term movement into Gujarat.

The estimate covers the wider Asiatic Lion Landscape, not only the Gir National Park core. It includes lions in newly recorded satellite populations and in a corridor-area population. The official figure is a structured population estimate, not a literal count of every animal. Visibility, vegetation, weather, animal movements and survey coverage can all affect the result.

Indicator 2020 2025 Change
Total estimated lions 674 891 +217 (32.20%)
Adult females 260 330 +70 (26.92%)
Lions in satellite populations Not stated 497 across nine populations Not comparable

Earlier official figures show the same long-term direction: 411 lions in 2010, 523 in 2015 and 674 in 2020, according to a 2025 parliamentary reply from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Why the increase is good news

A subspecies has recovered from near-collapse

Asiatic lions once faced severe losses from hunting, habitat destruction and declining prey. Protection and habitat management allowed the remnant population to reproduce and recover. The 2025 estimate is evidence that those efforts have produced a growing wild population.

More adult females indicate breeding strength

The rise from 260 to 330 adult females matters because a sustainable population needs breeding females, not just transient or dispersing males. It does not by itself prove that every age group or every sub-population is thriving, but it is a stronger conservation signal than a headline total alone.

Lions are using more of the landscape

Nearly 500 lions were recorded across nine satellite populations in 2025. Expansion beyond the traditional Gir core shows that lions can use a broader network of forests, grasslands, river corridors and other habitats when prey, water and protection are available. A connected network can reduce crowding and give dispersing animals additional places to establish territories.

Conservation investment is supporting the recovery

Government protection funding increased from ₹91.03 crore in 2021–22 to ₹155.53 crore in 2023–24, according to the ministry’s 2025 parliamentary reply. Project Lion links habitat security with local livelihoods, community participation, veterinary capacity and broader biodiversity conservation. Local residents, trackers and Vanya PraniMitras are part of the monitoring and response system.

Why a larger population is also a warning

More lions mean more contact with people and livestock

As lions move through agricultural land, grazing areas, village edges and revenue land, encounters become more likely. Most encounters do not become attacks, but livestock losses can affect household income, and close contact can create fear and accidental danger for both people and animals. Managing a larger population therefore requires rapid reporting, fair compensation, safe livestock practices and outreach with communities living near lion habitat.

Roads and railways create a changing mortality map

Dispersing lions increasingly cross roads and railway corridors. Open wells can trap or kill animals, while poorly designed barriers can block movement or funnel lions toward danger. Gujarat has introduced hotspot speed restrictions, patrols and a railway-protection standard operating procedure because infrastructure risks now extend beyond the historic core.

Disease could affect a large share of the population

All free-ranging Asiatic lions remain concentrated in one broad region, and the subspecies descends from a historically narrow genetic base. A contagious disease outbreak could therefore affect a substantial proportion of the population at once. Veterinary surveillance, domestic-animal health measures, investigation of carcasses and rapid laboratory testing are essential safeguards. A high population total does not remove this vulnerability.

Habitat capacity is finite

A rising estimate can conceal local crowding, limited prey or water, poor cub survival or broken movement corridors. The meaningful test is not simply whether the number rises, but whether growth remains compatible with ecological security and the safety and livelihoods of nearby communities.

Where are lions spreading outside Gir?

The 2025 landscape estimate includes nine satellite populations and a corridor-area population beyond the Gir core. These groups use a mixture of forest, grassland, river and human-dominated settings. The Gujarat Forest Department recorded 497 lions in satellite populations in 2025, showing that the recovery is increasingly distributed across a network rather than confined to one protected-area block.

Barda Wildlife Sanctuary is being developed as a second home for lions. Corridor management is intended to allow safer movement between sub-populations and reduce the chance that dispersing animals must cross the most dangerous roads, rail lines or settlement edges.

What Gujarat and India are doing about the risks

Monitoring and rapid local response

  • Satellite telemetry, field trackers and Vanya PraniMitras help locate animals and identify movement routes.
  • Hotspot patrols and speed restrictions target roads where crossings are most likely.
  • Railway safeguards and a protection standard operating procedure address collisions and dangerous track access.

Improving habitat, prey and water

  • Grassland restoration and prey-base improvement support lions outside the core.
  • Water augmentation reduces pressure during dry periods.
  • Corridor protection keeps satellite populations connected instead of isolating them in small pockets.

Reducing conflict and supporting residents

  • Farmer machans can provide safer observation and protection where lions pass through agricultural areas.
  • Community outreach explains how to report sightings, protect livestock and avoid risky encounters.
  • Livelihood and participation measures are part of Project Lion, rather than treating local people only as a source of conflict.

Building disease and veterinary capacity

  • Veterinary facilities are being strengthened for treatment, surveillance and emergency response.
  • Domestic-animal health and carcass investigation help detect threats before they spread widely.
  • Big-cat diagnostic and treatment expertise is a stated Project Lion objective.

Why a second free-ranging population matters

Conservation planners have repeatedly identified a geographically separate, secure population as a strategic safeguard. If an epidemic, extreme weather event or other catastrophe struck the current concentration, a second population could prevent the loss of the entire subspecies in one event. The Gujarat Forest Department describes this as a longer-term priority, not a completed solution.

Policy choice Potential benefit Main risk or cost
Expand habitat and corridors More space, safer dispersal and less crowding Greater exposure to farms, villages and infrastructure
Maintain one concentrated population Simpler protection and established management systems A disease or catastrophe could affect a large share of all lions
Establish a second secure population Geographic and disease-risk diversification Requires suitable habitat, prey, community consent and long-term protection
Prioritize rapid numerical growth Visible recovery in the short term May hide crowding, low cub survival or rising conflict

What the 891 figure does—and does not—tell us

  • It does show: a substantial increase since 2020, more adult females and widespread use of satellite areas.
  • It does not show by itself: cub survival, prey sufficiency, disease security, the safety of every corridor or whether every local community is benefiting.
  • The next indicators to watch: mortality causes, livestock-loss patterns, disease surveillance, prey abundance, water availability, corridor integrity and the performance of Barda as a second home.

Gujarat’s lion increase is therefore both a conservation success and a management test. Protecting the gains now means making room for lions while reducing the costs of coexistence, strengthening veterinary defenses and creating a genuinely separate population so that recovery is resilient rather than concentrated and fragile.
