Painted Lady Butterfly’s Inferred 2,600-Mile Transatlantic Flight

A 2024 study reconstructed a likely wind-assisted Atlantic crossing by painted lady butterflies, separating the 4,200-km ocean leg from a possible 7,000-km Europe-to-South America journey.

Vanessa cardui, the painted lady, appears to have crossed at least 4,200 kilometers (about 2,600 miles) of Atlantic Ocean from West Africa to French Guiana. Researchers reconstructed the wind-assisted journey from butterflies found on the South American coast—not from a transmitter tracking one insect continuously—so the crossing is an inference, estimated to have taken five to eight days.

What the study found

A 2024 Nature Communications study examined painted lady butterflies discovered on the Atlantic coast of French Guiana. The observations date to 2013: about ten butterflies were seen, and three were captured alive on a beach at around 6 a.m. on 28 October. Their damaged wings and resting behavior were consistent with a demanding arrival.

Using several independent analyses, the researchers concluded that the butterflies most likely arrived from West Africa. They estimated a minimum ocean crossing of 4,200 km (roughly 2,600 miles) lasting five to eight days. The paper describes the event as “potentially the first verified transatlantic crossing” by an insect, preserving a qualification because the route was reconstructed after the fact.

What “2,600 miles” measures—and what it does not

Distance Meaning Status
4,200 km (about 2,600 miles) Minimum Atlantic leg from a West African source to French Guiana Study estimate
7,000 km or more (about 4,350 miles or more) Possible full journey if the butterflies were born in Western Europe, then moved through Africa before crossing the ocean Broader inference, not an ocean-only measurement

The larger figure should not be presented as the length of the Atlantic crossing itself. It combines the estimated ocean leg with a probable earlier movement from Western Europe.

How could a butterfly cross the Atlantic?

Wind did most of the long-distance work

Trajectory modelling indicated that the journey was energetically feasible only with favorable winds. The butterflies therefore appear to have used sustained air currents to travel far beyond the distance they could cover by powered flight alone. “Wind-assisted” describes the inferred mechanism; it does not mean the insects were observed in flight for the entire route.

The route was reconstructed from multiple clues

  • Field surveys: coastal observations and the condition of the French Guiana specimens established where and when the arrivals were detected.
  • Wind trajectory modelling: atmospheric paths were tested to determine whether winds could connect the South American coast with likely African departure areas in the estimated time window.
  • Genomics: genetic comparisons helped identify the most plausible geographic source population.
  • Pollen metabarcoding: pollen carried by the butterflies provided clues about plants and regions they had recently visited.
  • Ecological niche modelling: habitat suitability was used to evaluate potential source areas.
  • Isotope geolocation: chemical signatures in tissues helped constrain where the insects had developed or moved.

Together, these methods supported a West African origin for the Atlantic segment and a likely earlier connection to Western Europe. No single measurement independently records every kilometer of the flight.

What is known about the 2013 arrivals

The butterflies were found in French Guiana in 2013, more than a decade before the report was published on 25 June 2024. The approximately ten sightings and three live captures supplied the physical evidence for the later reconstruction. The timing, damaged wings and resting behavior fit an exhausting arrival, but they cannot establish an exact departure point or prove that one captured individual flew the entire proposed route without interruption.

Why this is an inference, not a live flight record

Researchers did not attach tracking devices and follow a butterfly from Africa to South America in real time. The five-to-eight-day duration and 4,200-km minimum are estimates derived from models and biological evidence. Existing techniques for documenting long-range insect dispersal are limited, and many such movements could go undetected. The appropriate description is therefore a reconstructed, wind-assisted crossing by painted ladies, not a continuously witnessed flight.

How it fits painted ladies’ migration biology

Painted ladies are already known for multigenerational migrations. A separate 2024 iScience study used hydrogen and strontium isotope geolocation to examine their movements across the Sahara. It reported broad-front, roughly parallel movement, moderate connectivity among regions and “southward leapfrog” migration: early-autumn butterflies from higher latitudes travelled farther south than migrants arriving later in autumn.

That Sahara research provides ecological context rather than independent proof of the Atlantic event. Trans-Saharan movement is part of a recurrent migration system in which successive generations can contribute to a route. The French Guiana finding concerns a single inferred ocean crossing by individuals that may themselves have originated in Europe, so the routes and evidence should not be treated as observations of one documented Europe-to-South America flight.

What scientists can—and cannot—claim

  • Supported: painted ladies reached French Guiana; multiple analyses point to West Africa as the source of a minimum 4,200-km Atlantic crossing; favorable winds were necessary for energetic feasibility; and a Western European natal origin is probable in the broader reconstruction.
  • Estimated: the ocean crossing lasted five to eight days, and the full Europe–Africa–South America journey may have exceeded 7,000 km.
  • Still qualified: the study’s phrase “potentially the first verified transatlantic crossing” reflects the strength of the evidence while acknowledging limits in reconstructing an untracked insect journey.
