The animal in the 2024 camera footage was a juvenile Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), filmed at Richard Underwood Nature Refuge in Queensland. Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) reported about 400 of the wombats in 2024. In a later update dated 18 June 2026, AWC put the estimate at around 450 before counting a newly photographed joey as number 451.
What animal was caught on camera?
It was a Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat, one of the world’s rarest large mammals. The juvenile appeared in motion-sensor camera footage from Richard Underwood Nature Refuge in south-west Queensland. AWC ecologist Andy Howe found the recording while reviewing more than 100 hours of footage. AWC said the animal appeared to be in good health.
Howe thought it might be the same wombat first detected as a large pouch young in early 2023, but the animal’s exact age was difficult to determine. That possible connection is an informed identification, not a confirmed age measurement. BGR’s 4 September 2024 report covered the sighting, drawing on AWC’s release of 3 September 2024.
How many Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats are left?
The figure of about 400 belongs to AWC’s 2024 report; it should not be read as a current exact count. In a release dated 18 June 2026, AWC said an ecologist estimated there were around 450 before a newly photographed pouch young was counted as 451. The 451 figure is AWC’s reported count framing, not an independently cited census result. Population estimates can change as monitoring identifies animals and young.

Where do the remaining populations live?
AWC’s species profile lists three Queensland locations: Epping Forest National Park (Scientific), Richard Underwood Nature Refuge and Dhuny Yumba National Park Scientific. The third population was established at Dhuny Yumba in 2024. AWC describes Epping Forest as the remnant population and Richard Underwood as a reintroduced population.

What does the camera footage tell us?
A motion-sensor camera can document that an animal was present and provide observations of activity, behavior and possible reproduction. AWC uses camera monitoring to improve its understanding of the wombats and their local populations. In this case, the footage recorded a juvenile at one refuge; by itself, it cannot establish the animal’s exact age, count the global population or demonstrate a species-wide population trend.

Why is the species endangered?
AWC classifies the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat as Critically Endangered. Its listed pressures include habitat loss and degradation, competition with livestock and rabbits, and predation by dingoes or wild dogs. Protecting habitat, excluding feral predators at the refuge and monitoring the animals are among the measures described in the recovery work.
AWC says the population has recovered from 35 individuals to around 400 over roughly three decades. That historical comparison reflects AWC’s organizational account; it does not make the single 2024 camera sighting evidence of a new increase. The broader recovery program has involved Queensland’s environment department, AWC and The Wombat Foundation, with Glencore also named by AWC as a supporter. More context is available in AWC’s recovery-program history.
