Scientists have not yet produced a proven 11-day mosquito repellent for humans or pets. The headline refers to a July 2024 PNAS Nexus study in which researchers engineered two skin bacteria and used them on mice. Those mice showed reduced attraction and feeding by mosquitoes for up to 11 uninterrupted days under the study’s experimental conditions.
That is a promising research result, not a treatment you can buy or safely apply to a dog, cat, or person. The study did not establish human or veterinary safety, protection against mosquito-borne disease, regulatory approval, or a consumer product.
What the researchers actually invented
Liu and colleagues engineered two bacteria normally found among human skin microbes: Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium amycolatum. They deleted genes for L-lactate dehydrogenase, reducing production of L-(+)-lactic acid.
Lactic acid is one chemical cue associated with skin that can help mosquitoes locate a host. The researchers applied or engrafted the modified bacteria onto mouse skin, then measured mosquito attraction and feeding. The experiments included Aedes aegypti; the results should not be generalized to every mosquito species.

The paper describes the concept this way: “This study demonstrates that two genetically engineered human skin bacteria turn a mammal host less attractive to mosquito bites for over 11 days.” The statement refers to the tested mice, not to people or household animals. (Liu et al., PNAS Nexus, 2024)
How long did it work in the mouse experiments?
The study reports reduced mosquito attraction and feeding for up to 11 uninterrupted days after the engineered bacteria were established on mouse skin. In the S. epidermidis comparison, attraction was lower than in mice treated with the unmodified strain on specific test days:

These percentages are relative results from the researchers’ mosquito-attraction assays. They are not estimates of the percentage of human or pet bites prevented. The paper’s headline duration and the day-3 figure describe different aspects of the mouse work: duration refers to the period of reduced attraction and feeding, while 64.4% is one measured comparison on day 3.
Does the 11-day repellent work on humans, dogs, or cats?
It has not been shown to work on any of them. The evidence is from mice whose skin was treated with laboratory-engineered bacteria. No human clinical trial or veterinary study in the cited sources demonstrates protection, appropriate dosing, persistence on real-world skin, or safety.

- Do not apply laboratory strains, research cultures, or homemade bacterial preparations to a pet or person.
- The study does not show prevention of malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, heartworm, or any other mosquito-borne infection.
- A reduction in mosquito attraction is not the same as complete bite prevention.
- Effects could vary with host species, skin chemistry, weather, bacterial survival, mosquito species, and exposure level.
For pets, use only mosquito and parasite products labeled for that species and approved in your jurisdiction. A product safe for dogs can be dangerous to cats, and human repellents are not automatically suitable for either.
How this approach differs from DEET
The paper uses DEET as background context, not as part of a controlled human head-to-head trial. Its Significance Statement cites approximately 4–8 hours of DEET protection, compared with more than 11 days of reduced attraction in the mouse experiment.

Because the study did not test DEET against the engineered strains under identical conditions, the two duration figures should not be treated as a direct product ranking.

A possible microbiome-based repellent category
Most repellents work by putting a chemical barrier or deterrent on the skin. This research explores a different strategy: changing which odor-related compounds skin microbes produce. If future work can make that approach predictable and safe, living or microbiome-based repellents could become a new product category.

Safety questions
Engineered bacteria would need extensive testing before human or animal use. Important questions include whether the strains remain genetically stable, how long they persist, whether they alter the normal skin microbiome, whether they can transfer genes, and what happens in people or animals with damaged skin or weakened immune systems.
Regulatory and practical questions
The cited sources do not establish approval, manufacturing standards, a treatment schedule, storage requirements, or instructions for applying these organisms. They also do not establish protection in outdoor conditions or against the full range of mosquitoes that bite pets and people.
Can you buy this 11-day engineered-bacteria repellent?
No consumer product based on these engineered strains is identified in the PNAS Nexus paper or its cited coverage. The authors present the findings as a foundation for future microbiome-based products, not as a finished repellent for sale. The bibliographic record is available from PubMed, and the contemporaneous news report appears at BGR.
What pet owners should do now
- Ask a veterinarian about a mosquito-control product specifically labeled for your dog or cat.
- Use the exact species, weight, age, and frequency directions on the label.
- Reduce exposure by removing standing water, using screens, and keeping pets indoors during periods of heavy mosquito activity when practical.
- Do not substitute the mouse-study bacteria, human insect repellent, essential oils, or another unapproved preparation for veterinary prevention.
The research is scientifically interesting because it sustained a measurable change in mosquito behavior for much longer than the paper’s cited DEET duration. It is not evidence that an 11-day repellent is ready for pets or people.
