It is a feature-rich, large appliance, but the available evidence does not establish how often it has bugs or whether current software fixes have resolved every reported problem. Consider it if you value camera and activity features; be cautious if you need proven long-term reliability or want those features without a subscription.
What the Litter-Robot 5 Pro does
The 5 Pro is an automatic sifting litter box that separates waste into a drawer after use. Whisker says it combines visit and weight monitoring with an AI-powered dual-camera system and is designed for households with up to five cats. The front camera faces the approach and supports cat recognition; the interior-facing camera shows the litter bed. Its size deserves attention before purchase. Whisker lists dimensions of 29.9 inches tall, a 22-by-27-inch footprint and a 15.75-by-15.75-inch entryway; empty weight is 29.6 pounds. Are the cameras and app features worth paying for?
The camera hardware does not mean every camera or history feature is included without membership. Whisker says basic access includes recorded events and live streaming for up to five minutes daily. Enhanced features—including facial recognition, more storage, unlimited streaming and longer-term activity insights—require Whisker+. The standard app view provides a seven-day look at visits and individual weights; Whisker says Whisker+ can provide up to two years of history. The cameras can be toggled off in the app, according to the Litter-Robot 5 User Manual. On privacy, Whisker says: “Our AI is trained to detect and record pets—not people—so your privacy stays protected. However, the camera will record you if you are in the frame with your pet.” The company also says users can turn the camera off or delete videos in the app. This is Whisker’s statement, not an independent privacy audit. What WasteID does—and what it cannot promise
Whisker says WasteID distinguishes urine from feces so the robot can wait longer after urine, allowing clumps to form, and cycle sooner after solid waste to help contain odor. The company says the feature is available on Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro. Its release notes for the rollout cautioned that the system was still learning, accuracy might vary and availability would roll out in stages; later notes describe WasteID improvements. What do we know about bugs and reliability?
Whisker’s published release history shows repeated app and firmware maintenance, including fixes involving scale taring, motor-fault reporting, connectivity errors and a Wi-Fi chip fault. The listed app release 1.41.0, dated August 27, 2026, describes minor improvements. For the Pro, firmware 5.10.2 dated August 4, 2026 lists bug fixes. March 25, 2026 notes include WasteID improvements and error-reporting fixes related to scale taring and motor fault; December 19, 2025 notes mention waste-weight fixes and connectivity and “WiFi Chip Fault” fixes. These entries identify areas addressed; they do not say how many units were affected, whether each fix worked for every owner or which problems remain. WhiskerOS release history

One independent hands-on report offers a limited positive data point: WebVet Editorial Team’s review, published September 21, 2026 and medically reviewed by Dr. Pippa Elliott, BVMS MRCVS, reports smooth app onboarding in the household it tested. The test covered setup, Wi-Fi onboarding, cameras, dashboard and drawer access on setup day; it did not establish long-term reliability or drawer-emptying intervals. Taken together, the release notes and setup report do not quantify bug frequency. The available evidence cannot establish how common bugs are or whether all current problems have been resolved. It would be misleading to treat individual complaints as a defect rate—or to treat the existence of updates as proof that reliability concerns are over.
Wi-Fi requirements and setup
Whisker states that the 5 Pro requires a 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal and IPv4 or IPv6 addressing. A compatible signal and phone app are part of ownership, so this is not a good fit for a household that wants an appliance independent of connectivity. Whisker product FAQ

- Add the robot in the Whisker app.
- Press the robot’s Connect button for three to five seconds, until the indicator blinks blue.
- Scan the QR code shown in the app from about six inches away.
- Keep the app open while the robot connects. Whisker says a yellow camera indicator may mean the Wi-Fi credentials were entered incorrectly; its support guide also gives power-cycle and factory-reset instructions for specified onboarding failures.

Whisker recommends standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter. It says some silica beads or crystals may work if they pass through the screen, but translucent or white litter may interfere with litter-level and drawer-full indicators. The company recommends replacing the carbon filter and OdorTrap packs every two to four weeks for optimal odor absorption. Whisker’s product page

Drawer-emptying frequency depends on the number and size of cats. Whisker’s “as low as once every 10 days” is a best-case manufacturer statement, not a universal interval. Plan to check the drawer and indicators rather than budgeting around that minimum-frequency claim. Whisker’s product page

When Whisker’s product page was accessed on September 27, 2026, it listed a starting price of $899, a 90-day in-home trial and a one-year warranty. These terms can change; confirm the price, trial conditions, return-shipping responsibility and service coverage directly before buying. Who should consider the 5 Pro?
- A plausible fit: You want an automatic sifting box, value camera-based monitoring and activity history, have space for its footprint, and are comfortable with app and Wi-Fi dependence. Check which camera and history features require Whisker+.
- Think carefully: You need demonstrated long-term reliability, prefer a simpler appliance, have limited space, or do not want subscription-linked features. The available independent test is setup-day evidence from one home, not a long-term reliability comparison.
- Compare before choosing: For the regular Litter-Robot 5 or other automatic boxes, compare total purchase and subscription cost, camera access without membership, household and cat-identification needs, dimensions and entry size, app dependence, update history, litter and consumable requirements, and trial, warranty, return and service terms. The evidence here does not include a head-to-head test establishing a superior alternative.
Whisker calls WasteID “an industry-first technology available exclusively on Litter-Robot 5 and Litter-Robot 5 Pro.” That is the maker’s marketing claim, not an independently verified industry finding. Whisker’s product page
