Scott van Zyl, a 44-year-old South African professional hunter and safari operator, disappeared near Zimbabwe’s Limpopo River on 7 April 2017. DNA testing later confirmed that remains recovered from Nile crocodile stomach contents were his. The evidence establishes the crocodile connection; it does not establish every detail of how he died.

Who was Scott van Zyl?

Van Zyl was a South African professional hunter who operated SS Pro Safaris. In April 2017, he was assisting Zimbabwean safari operator Tokkie van der Merwe on an expedition in the Chikwarakwara area of Zimbabwe’s Beitbridge East district, near the Limpopo River, according to the Heritage Protection Group’s timeline. NewsDay Zimbabwe reported that he was 44.

Some coverage describes Van Zyl as a trophy hunter. The available operational account identifies him as a professional hunter and safari operator; those descriptions should not be treated as proof of further details about the hunt or its purpose.

Where and when did he disappear?

Van Zyl went missing on 7 April 2017 while on the expedition near the Limpopo River. He was accompanied by a local tracker and a pack of dogs. Van Zyl and the tracker separated while searching near the river. The dogs returned without him, and a search began.

Searchers followed footprints to the riverbank and found his backpack there. Underwater searches covering roughly 300 metres did not locate him, according to the Heritage Protection Group account.

How did investigators link his remains to crocodiles?

On 12 April, Zimbabwe’s Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and Beitbridge Rural District Council authorized the shooting of three Nile crocodiles in connection with the search. Two were shot that afternoon, and investigators collected stomach contents for forensic and DNA analysis. A third crocodile was recovered later. During post-mortem examination, investigators found a toe-cap from a CAT boot similar to the footwear Van Zyl had worn, the Heritage Protection Group timeline says.

On 20 April, South African test results reported a DNA match between Van Zyl and material recovered from the crocodile stomach contents. NewsDay Zimbabwe also reported that DNA testing confirmed that remains inside the crocodiles were his.

“Permission was given for three Nile crocodiles in the area to be shot, and one of them contained Mr Van Zyl’s remains. Subsequent DNA tests have proved the remains to be those of Mr Van Zyl.”

Sakkie Louwrens, director of the Heritage Protection Group, as quoted in its timeline

What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?

The forensic finding supports the central claim that Van Zyl’s remains were found in a crocodile. It does not, by itself, document the precise sequence of events or establish exactly how the crocodile encounter occurred. The cited timeline and contemporaneous NewsDay report establish the disappearance, search, recovery and DNA identification; they do not provide a detailed account of the attack.

That distinction matters: “eaten by crocodiles” is a shorthand for the confirmed recovery of remains from crocodile stomach contents, not a complete reconstruction of his final moments.
