Ragamuffins are large, slow-maturing, exceptionally people-oriented cats with a soft, semi-long coat. They are often relaxed cuddlers and can suit families with children or other pets, but their trusting nature makes careful introductions and safe indoor living important. Plan on a long-toothed comb at least weekly, measured meals, routine veterinary care and several years of growth: the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) says full maturity takes about four years.
Ragamuffin breed history
CFA traces the Ragamuffin to breeders who left the Ragdoll registry in the early 1990s and continued developing cats with selected domestic longhairs. CFA began registering the breed in 2003 and granted championship status in 2011. Those dates describe the organization’s recognition history, not the age of every Ragamuffin line. What a Ragamuffin looks like
The show standard describes a medium-to-large, muscular cat with a broad, rounded modified-wedge head, large walnut-shaped eyes and a full tail. The coat is soft, dense and silky, ranging from medium to medium-long in length. The breed is substantial without being defined by a single required adult weight.
CFA permits every color and pattern except pointed colors. Therefore a cat’s color or pattern alone does not establish that it is a Ragamuffin; pedigree, breeder records and conformity to the standard matter when breed identification is important. Read the detailed CFA RagaMuffin show standard.

Approximate size and maturation
Ragamuffins mature slowly. CFA states, “RagaMuffins attain full maturity at approximately four years of age.” Its profile gives approximate possible mature weights of up to 20 pounds for males and around 15 pounds for females. These are profile figures, not ideal targets or a promise for an individual cat; body condition, frame, age and veterinary assessment are more useful than a number on the scale.
Temperament and everyday behavior
CFA characterizes Ragamuffins as affectionate, people-loving and docile, often content to cuddle. Its standard calls one “a cuddly, feline teddy bear.” Many are sociable with children, cats and dogs, but these are breed tendencies rather than guarantees about an individual. Personality is shaped by genetics, early socialization, handling and experience.

Because Ragamuffins are generally trusting and rarely aggressive, they may not respond defensively to danger. Keep an indoor cat indoors, or provide a secure catio, and supervise interactions with young children. Introduce every new animal gradually rather than assuming a friendly breed will accept an unfamiliar housemate immediately.
Introducing a Ragamuffin to other pets
- Give the newcomer a separate room with food, water, litter and hiding places.
- Exchange bedding or other scents before allowing face-to-face contact.
- Use short, supervised visual meetings through a barrier, rewarding calm behavior.
- Increase shared time gradually and provide separate resources so no animal must compete.
Pause and return to an earlier step if either animal shows persistent fear, chasing, blocking or escalating conflict.

Coat care: low-maintenance, not maintenance-free
The Ragamuffin coat often resists mats, so daily grooming is usually unnecessary. CFA recommends a long-toothed comb once or twice a week; PetMD recommends weekly combing and specifically notes that the longer belly hairs can mat. A practical routine is one thorough combing each week, with an extra session during heavier shedding or whenever tangles appear. CFA’s care guidance and PetMD’s breed overview describe this balance.
- Work gently from the skin outward, checking behind the legs, under the chest and across the belly.
- Use a long-toothed cat comb rather than relying on a quick surface brush.
- Stop if the cat becomes distressed; painful mats may require professional or veterinary help rather than forceful pulling.
- Use routine handling to check the skin, ears, claws and mouth, and arrange veterinary care for abnormalities.
Feeding, activity and home setup
Feed a nutritionally appropriate food for the cat’s life stage. Measure portions instead of leaving unlimited food available when weight gain is a concern; the right amount depends on age, body size, activity, health and veterinary advice. PetMD mentions food puzzles and slow feeders as optional tools for fast eaters, not as Ragamuffin-specific requirements.

Provide sturdy scratching surfaces, climbing or resting areas that can support a large cat, interactive play and daily social contact. A calm Ragamuffin may appear inactive, but play and environmental enrichment still support healthy movement and prevent boredom. Indoor living or a secure catio reduces risks associated with roaming. CFA describes Ragamuffins as generally sturdy and says no breed-specific genetic issues are established in its profile. It also notes that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD) can occur in cats and discusses genetic testing of breeding animals as one way to manage concerns. Testing lowers uncertainty for a breeding program; it does not eliminate every possible illness or guarantee an individual cat’s future health. Ask a breeder which tests were performed, for which parents, and what documentation is available.

PetMD advises veterinary assessment for concerning changes, including signs that could be associated with HCM. Do not attempt to diagnose a Ragamuffin from breed information alone. A veterinarian should tailor examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, nutrition and monitoring to the individual cat.
Zoetis Petcare gives a general lifespan range of 13–17 years. That is a breed-profile estimate, not a prediction for a particular cat; genetics, preventive care, environment and disease all affect longevity. Zoetis’ Ragamuffin profile explicitly notes that breed information does not replace veterinary guidance.

A Ragamuffin is a strong candidate if you want a social companion and can commit to regular combing, measured feeding, indoor safety and veterinary care. It is a poorer fit if you need a cat that can be left without interaction, cannot accommodate a large adult, or do not want ongoing coat maintenance.
