Let your cat set the pace: leash training is guided exploration, not teaching a cat to heel like a dog.
What you need before training
Use a cat-specific harness with a leash attachment on the back, not a collar. A harness is harder for a cat to slip out of than a collar, according to the Wisconsin Humane Society. Choose a design that lets your cat move normally and does not rub or restrict the shoulders.
Fit the harness snugly, with room to slide two fingers between it and your cat, as the Wisconsin Humane Society recommends. Check that it stays secure when your cat moves; a loose harness can make escape easier, while one that is too tight can be uncomfortable.
Gather a lightweight leash six to eight feet long, treats your cat reliably enjoys, and optionally a clicker and target stick or feather wand. The Ontario SPCA lists these as useful training supplies. One harness example named by the Wisconsin Humane Society is the PetSafe Gentle Leader Come With Me Kitty Harness; the right choice depends on fit and your cat’s comfort.

Introduce the harness indoors
Build a positive association
Set the harness near your cat’s food or a favorite resting place and let your cat investigate it voluntarily. Reward sniffing or approaching with a favorite treat, canned food, or play. Then, over brief sessions, pair gentle handling and momentary contact with rewards. Keep the harness from becoming a surprise or a struggle.
Practice wearing it
When your cat is calm, put the harness on and offer food or play. Start with a short wear, then remove it before your cat becomes distressed. Gradually extend the time over repeated sessions, watching for relaxed movement rather than rushing through a schedule.

Before adding a leash, aim for comfortable harness wear for 10 to 15 minutes. This is the readiness guideline given by the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society in 2019, not a promise that every cat will be ready after a set number of days.
Teach your cat to accept the leash
Let the leash become familiar
Clip the lightweight leash to the back of the harness and let your cat drag it indoors under close supervision. Keep sessions calm and brief. Do not leave your cat alone with a dragging leash, and do not jerk or pull it.

Follow your cat and reward relaxed movement
Once your cat moves comfortably with the leash attached, pick it up and follow rather than steering or tugging. Reward calm exploration and a slack leash. A clicker, target stick, or feather wand can encourage a step or two; reward small choices and build gradually.
Some cats will explore on foot; others may prefer to sit and observe. The San Francisco SPCA cautions against expecting cats to walk like dogs. Let your cat decide where to investigate, while keeping the leash secure and loose enough for natural movement.

Take the first outdoor steps
Wait until your cat is relaxed wearing the harness, moving normally, calm with the leash dragging, and able to recover from mild distractions indoors. There is no universal training timetable; readiness is more useful than counting days.
- Before outdoor outings, check recommended vaccinations and make sure your cat has microchip identification.
- Choose a quiet time and a secure, low-activity area. Keep the first visits short.
- Let your cat sniff and choose the direction. Reward calm behavior and end the outing while your cat is still coping comfortably.
- Stay with your cat throughout. Never leave a harnessed cat outside unattended or tie the cat outdoors.
Use a carrier for veterinary transport rather than relying on a leash and harness.

If your cat freezes or seems frightened
Freezing can happen when a cat first wears a harness or encounters a new setting. Do not pull harder. Shorten the session, offer rewards, and return to a step your cat can handle. If your cat hides, tries to flee, or stops exploring, go back indoors and try another day at an easier level. Progress is the cat’s relaxed participation, not how far you walk.
