Fresh, cooked, thawed, or unseasoned frozen peas are the best options. Keep them an occasional treat or topper, not a replacement for complete dog food. Avoid seasoned peas and make canned peas an exception because of their added sodium. Introduce peas gradually, and ask your veterinarian before offering them to a dog with a medical condition or a prescription diet.
When peas are safe for dogs
Plain peas are generally safe for healthy dogs when served in modest portions. They provide fiber plus vitamins A, C and K, iron, potassium and antioxidants, but they do not supply all the nutrients a dog needs. A complete-and-balanced commercial food should remain the foundation of the diet.
Use peas as an occasional reward or food topper. Wash fresh peas, and cook or steam them until tender when necessary. Thaw frozen peas before serving; choose packages with no salt, butter, oil or seasoning. Start with only a few peas and watch your dog’s stool and appetite before offering more.
Fresh, frozen or canned: which peas are best?
| Type | How to serve | Main concern |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh | Wash and serve plain; cook until tender if firm. | Raw, hard peas may be more difficult for some dogs to chew. |
| Frozen | Thaw and serve an unseasoned product; cooking can make peas easier to chew. | Check the ingredient label for salt or flavorings. |
| Canned | Only occasionally, and only if the product is plain and low in sodium; draining and rinsing can reduce surface salt. | Many canned peas contain added sodium. Seasonings may add further hazards. |
Never add butter, salt, onion, garlic, oil or spice blends. Onion and garlic can be toxic to dogs, while rich or salty preparations can cause gastrointestinal upset and add unnecessary calories.

How many peas can a dog eat?
There is no single medically optimal number for every dog. Portion depends on body size, total daily calories, activity, health and tolerance. PetMD’s general examples below are starting points—not individualized prescriptions.
| Dog size | General daily example |
|---|---|
| Extra-small (2–20 lb) | 1 teaspoon or less |
| Small (21–30 lb) | 2 teaspoons or less |
| Medium (31–50 lb) | 3 teaspoons or less |
| Large (51–90 lb) | 1–2 tablespoons or less |
| Extra-large (over 90 lb) | 3 tablespoons or less |
Those amounts are general guidance from PetMD, not a veterinary feeding plan. All treats—including vegetables—should provide about 10% or less of a dog’s daily calories; the remaining calories should come from a balanced diet. If your dog is overweight, diabetic, has digestive disease, or eats a therapeutic diet, your veterinarian may recommend a different limit or no extras.

Peas, pods and choking risk
Whole peas are usually easy to portion, but pods can be tough and may lodge in the throat, particularly when swallowed whole. Shell garden or English peas. Treat edible-pod varieties cautiously: remove the pod for small dogs, dogs that gulp food, and dogs with chewing or swallowing difficulty. Cut larger pieces and mash peas when needed.
Seek urgent veterinary help if a dog is choking, struggling to breathe, repeatedly gagging, or unable to swallow. A swallowed pod that causes persistent coughing, vomiting or distress also warrants prompt advice.

Introducing peas and spotting intolerance
- Offer a few plain, tender peas when your dog is otherwise well.
- Observe for changes in stool, gas, appetite or energy over the next day.
- If there is no problem, keep future servings small and occasional rather than increasing rapidly.
Stop serving peas and contact your veterinarian for repeated vomiting, significant diarrhea, marked abdominal discomfort, lethargy or an allergic-type reaction. Mild gas or a loose stool can occur when a dog receives too much fiber or a new food, but persistent or severe signs need professional assessment.

Peas in a treat-sized home serving are different from peas or other pulses (such as lentils and chickpeas) making up a large share of a commercial formula. Ingredient position alone does not establish that a food is unsafe; the complete recipe, formulation and the individual dog matter.

Research and case reports have raised questions about some pulse-heavy diets and diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The evidence has not shown that a few plain peas given as a treat cause DCM. The American Kennel Club reports the FDA received more than 1,100 diagnosed canine DCM cases — U.S. Food and Drug Administration case reports, January 2014–July 2020, as reported by the American Kennel Club. AKC also summarizes Tufts researchers’ analysis of nine diets associated with canine DCM that contained pulses and/or potatoes or sweet potatoes as major ingredients. These findings support veterinary and scientific attention to the overall diet, not avoidance of every pea.
Do not abruptly switch foods or add supplements in response to internet claims. If peas, legumes or potatoes are prominent in your dog’s food and you are concerned, discuss the specific product and your dog’s history with your veterinarian. As AKC Chief Veterinarian Jerry Klein, DVM, advises: “In addition, it’s important to discuss any change in diet you are considering with your vet prior to making that change.”

When to check with your veterinarian first
- Your dog eats a prescription or therapeutic diet.
- Your dog has heart, kidney, pancreatic, intestinal or metabolic disease.
- Your dog has food allergies or a history of diet-related diarrhea.
- You are considering a major diet change rather than an occasional topper.
- Your dog develops repeated digestive signs, coughing, weakness or reduced exercise tolerance after a diet change.
High-quality commercial pet foods are formulated to provide the nutrients dogs need, except when a veterinarian prescribes a special plan for a medical condition. For those dogs, even a seemingly small extra can affect calorie, sodium or nutrient targets.
