What sniffing gives your dog
Dogs use scent to gather information about their surroundings. A sniff-focused walk lets them follow that natural behavior instead of treating every outing as a race for distance or pace. VCA Animal Hospitals describes scent walks as mental enrichment that helps dogs process the world around them (VCA Animal Hospitals).
Sniffing also gives a dog some choice in how to explore. The American Kennel Club (AKC) identifies autonomy and potential stress relief as benefits of sniff walks, and says most dogs benefit from scent exploration (AKC). It is enrichment, not a guaranteed treatment for anxiety or other behavior problems.
What the research can—and cannot—show
A 2019 controlled study by Charlotte Duranton and Alexandra Horowitz followed 20 pet dogs practicing nosework or heelwork for two weeks. The authors concluded that nosework increased dogs’ positive judgment bias, sometimes described as “optimism” (Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 2019). This is evidence for olfactory enrichment under the study’s conditions; it does not establish that every outdoor sniff walk produces the same effect, or how long or often every dog should sniff.

How to make a walk dog-led and safe
- Choose a suitable place. Pick a route with room to pause without blocking pedestrians or putting your dog near traffic, hazardous substances, or animals that may be unsafe. Match the route to your dog’s confidence and ability to respond to you.
- Use equipment that gives room without giving up control. A well-fitted harness can help manage the leash. In an open, low-traffic area, PetMD suggests a 10–30-foot leash, and AKC recommends a harness and long line for safer exploration (PetMD; AKC). A 30-foot long-line dog leash is one option where there is enough open space; shorten the line when needed for control or to comply with local rules.
- Give pauses time. When your dog stops to investigate, wait rather than immediately pulling them away. Keep the leash from becoming a constant correction, while maintaining basic leash manners and attention or recall skills. VCA’s enrichment guidance recommends letting dogs sniff freely during an enrichment walk (VCA Animal Hospitals).
- Notice how your dog is coping. Loose, relaxed movement and the ability to disengage are useful signs that the outing is manageable. Tension, hypervigilance, frantic scanning, or an inability to settle may mean you should create more distance, shorten the outing, or seek help from a qualified veterinary or behavior professional.
How long should a dog sniff?
There is no established universal duration or frequency for sniff walks. AKC says 20–30 minutes of sniffing can provide substantial mental stimulation, but this is practical guidance—not a prescription for every dog or a substitute for assessing the individual animal (AKC). Let your dog’s interest, comfort, health, and the conditions of the walk guide its length.
Sniffing versus exercise and potty walks
A sniff walk includes some movement, but sniffing alone does not necessarily meet a dog’s physical exercise needs. AKC notes that dogs may need additional exercise beyond sniff walks (AKC). Consider age, breed, health, mobility, weather, and your dog’s preferences when balancing exploration with walking, play, or training.

Different outings can have different jobs: a scent-focused walk for exploration, a brisker walk for physical activity, and a short trip for toileting. PetMD recommends allowing sniffing rather than immediately pulling a dog away, while recognizing that not every walk has to serve the same purpose (PetMD).

If weather, safety, or other circumstances make an outdoor walk impractical, hide some of your dog’s meal for them to find, or use a snuffle mat or treat-dispensing toy. These activities encourage searching and foraging indoors; AAHA and VCA include food-based enrichment among ways to engage dogs (AAHA; VCA Animal Hospitals). Adjust the activity to your dog’s abilities and supervise as appropriate.
