Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), often called feline distemper or feline parvo, is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease. “Feline distemper” is an informal name for FPV; it is not canine distemper. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, appetite loss, or dehydration warrant an immediate call to a veterinarian—especially in a kitten or an unvaccinated cat. Prompt veterinary care, isolation, and vaccination are central to managing and preventing the disease.
What is feline panleukopenia?
FPV is a feline parvovirus that can infect felids. The name panleukopenia refers to a marked reduction in white blood cells: the virus targets rapidly dividing cells, including those in bone marrow and lymph nodes. It also damages the intestinal lining, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and severe dehydration. Developing fetal tissue can be affected as well. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes FPV as highly contagious and deadly. Cornell’s overview was last updated September 8, 2026.
“Feline distemper” is a colloquial alternative name for FPV and can be confused with canine distemper, which is a different disease. Feline parvo and feline panleukopenia refer to FPV.
What signs should prompt a veterinary call?
Signs can include:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Fever
- Depression, unusual tiredness, or lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration, which may show as dry gums or sunken eyes
- Abdominal pain
Kittens are at greatest risk of severe disease; sudden death is reported most often in kittens under five months. Do not wait for every sign to appear. Cornell advises owners to contact a veterinarian immediately if these signs occur. Call promptly if your cat is unvaccinated, is a young kitten, or may have been exposed to an infected cat or contaminated environment.

If a kitten survives an infection acquired before birth, damage to the cerebellum can cause lasting incoordination and tremors, a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. This is not an outcome for every infected kitten.
Can an indoor cat catch feline parvo?
Yes. FPV spreads mainly through fecal contamination, including on objects and in environments. People can move contamination on shoes or clothing, so indoor-only status does not eliminate indirect exposure. The European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD) says infectious virus may remain in the environment for months; Merck Veterinary Manual owner guidance says it may persist for more than a year unless potent disinfectants inactivate it. These descriptions show why the virus can pose a lingering risk, not a guaranteed survival time in every home.

Exposure risk is reduced by vaccination, avoiding known infected cats and contaminated premises, washing hands after handling other cats, and not sharing bowls or toys with cats whose health status is unknown. Keep a new cat separate pending veterinary examination and appropriate vaccines, and isolate a sick cat from other cats.
How do veterinarians diagnose FPV?
A veterinarian considers the cat’s signs, exposure history, and vaccination history, then examines the patient and may check bloodwork, including white blood cell counts. A clinic antigen test may support diagnosis. PCR testing through a specialized laboratory may be considered when uncertainty remains. Recent vaccination can affect interpretation of fecal antigen or PCR results, so tell the veterinarian when the cat was last vaccinated. Merck Veterinary Manual’s clinical guidance, reviewed June 2025 and updated March 2026, describes compatible history and signs, patient-side ELISA testing, and characteristic neutropenia or lymphopenia as diagnostic support.

How is feline panleukopenia treated?
Cornell’s guidance describes no specific treatment that eliminates the virus. Seriously ill cats may need hospitalization and intensive supportive care while their bodies fight the infection. Depending on the cat’s condition, care can include:
- Intravenous fluids to address dehydration and fluid losses
- Medication to control nausea and vomiting
- Nutritional support and nursing care
- Antibiotics when indicated
- Vitamins, and transfusion for some cats with anemia or severe protein loss
There is no home cure described in this veterinary guidance. Do not try to treat suspected FPV with home medication or wait for the cat to recover without veterinary assessment. Call a veterinarian promptly and follow instructions for isolation and transport.

Published mortality figures need context. An ABCD guideline abstract from 2009 reported mortality of over 90% in kittens; that historical figure is not an individual prognosis or a current estimate across treatment settings. Separately, the ABCD guideline’s severe-disease discussion says survival among diseased cats is less than 50% even with intensive care. These figures describe different contexts and should not be combined into a single prediction for an individual cat.

Ask your veterinarian how to manage the specific room, objects, and materials your cat contacted. Cornell specifies household bleach diluted 1:32—one-half cup of bleach in one gallon of water—with at least 10 minutes of contact on affected surfaces. Merck identifies this as 6% aqueous sodium hypochlorite used for a 10-minute contact time. This guidance is for compatible surfaces, not every household material.

- Keep other cats away from the affected area and follow your veterinarian’s isolation and hygiene instructions.
- Remove visible contamination before disinfecting; apply the bleach solution only to surfaces that can safely tolerate it.
- Keep the surface wet for at least 10 minutes, as specified by Cornell’s guidance.
- Follow the product label and veterinary advice. Do not mix bleach with other cleaning products or apply disinfectant to an animal.
- Dispose of items that cannot be disinfected, as Cornell recommends, and ask your veterinarian about materials that are difficult to clean.
Use a disinfectant identified and labeled as effective against parvoviruses, at its specified dilution and wet contact time. A generic “pet-safe” claim alone does not establish that a cleaner inactivates FPV.
How can vaccination prevent FPV?
Vaccination is the central preventive measure. Cornell identifies the FVRCP combination vaccine as protecting against FPV, feline herpesvirus 1, and feline calicivirus, and recommends it as a core vaccine for all cats, including indoor cats. The 2020 AAHA/AAFP Feline Vaccination Guidelines also treat FPV as a core vaccine and emphasize tailoring decisions to the patient’s history and risk.
Cornell’s general schedule, on its page last updated September 8, 2026, is:
- Kittens: Start at 6–8 weeks of age, then give doses every 3–4 weeks through 16–20 weeks, followed by a booster at one year.
- Cats older than 16 weeks with no or unknown vaccination history: Give one or two doses, depending on veterinary protocol, 3–4 weeks apart.
- Later boosters: Intervals differ depending on whether the vaccine is injectable or intranasal.
This is general guidance, not an individual prescription. Ask your veterinarian to reconcile local protocols and the product label with your cat’s records, age, health, maternal-antibody considerations, and exposure risk. Vaccination does not replace isolation of a sick cat or careful hygiene.
