Hairless Xolos need attention to sun exposure and, sometimes, extra skin care when young; coated Xolos have a short coat that needs only occasional brushing. The breed standard describes the typical temperament as calm, tranquil, aloof and attentive, but individual dogs differ.
What is a Xoloitzcuintli?
The Xoloitzcuintli is an ancient, natural breed from Mexico, kept as a companion and guard dog. The American Kennel Club (AKC) uses the spelling “Xoloitzcuintli,” while the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) record uses “Xoloitzcuintle”; these names refer to the same breed. The FCI lists Mexico as the breed’s country of origin and gives 8 October 2012 as the publication date of its official valid standard. FCI breed record
The breed is defined by two varieties—hairless and coated—and three AKC-recognized sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard. The official standard says the varieties are alike in conformation except for coat and dentition. AKC breed information AKC Official Standard of the Xoloitzcuintli
Are Xoloitzcuintli dogs hairless?
Not all of them. The hairless variety has a total or almost total absence of hair, while the coated variety is covered in a short, flat coat. The word “hairless” in the breed’s common name describes one variety, not every Xolo.

How big do Mexican Hairless dogs get?
AKC recognizes Toy, Miniature and Standard Xolos. These are size categories; the sources cited here do not provide height or weight ranges to quote. If you are choosing a puppy, ask the breeder which size category the parents represent and what size range they expect, rather than relying on the breed name alone.
What is a Xoloitzcuintli’s temperament?
The AKC Official Standard states: “Typical Xolo temperament is calm, tranquil, aloof and attentive.” That is a description of the breed’s typical character, not a guarantee about an individual dog or a promise that every Xolo will be quiet or immediately welcoming to strangers. AKC Official Standard of the Xoloitzcuintli
AKC describes Xolos as enjoying long walks and upbeat play, and notes that they are often tranquil at home. Young dogs need substantial exercise and structured play. The right routine depends on the individual dog and household, so assess the dog’s needs rather than treating an unspecified number of daily minutes as a breed rule. AKC breed information
Are Xolos good family dogs?
A Xolo may suit a household that can provide regular activity, structured play for a young dog and routine care for its coat variety. The standard’s calm, attentive description can help set expectations, but it cannot determine how a particular dog will behave with children, visitors or other pets. Meet the individual dog, ask how it has been socialized, and consider whether its temperament and needs fit your household.

How do you care for a hairless Xolo?
Skin and sun care
AKC recommends sunscreen for hairless Xolos when they have prolonged exposure to direct sun. The breed guidance does not specify a product, SPF, ingredients or application schedule, so ask your veterinarian for advice suited to your dog and outdoor routine. Some younger Xolos develop adolescent acne and may need special skin care. AKC breed information
Coat, nails and routine grooming
Coated Xolos need occasional brushing for their short, easy-care coat. Grooming for hairless adults is minimal, though younger dogs may need the additional skin attention described above. AKC also recommends occasional baths and regular nail trimming. AKC breed information

Health care and breeder questions
AKC describes Xolos as generally healthy and says responsible breeders screen for concerns including hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and eye disorders. The AKC national breed-club testing list names patella evaluation, hip evaluation, cardiac exam and ophthalmologist evaluation. These are screening recommendations, not diagnoses or proof that a puppy is free of disease. Ask a breeder for the parents’ relevant health-test documentation and discuss ongoing care with your veterinarian. AKC breed information AKC recommended health tests
AKC also advises regular veterinary checkups and parasite control, regular ear checks, and frequent tooth-brushing with dog toothpaste. AKC breed information

Which Xolo variety is right for you?
| Variety | Coat | Care considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Hairless | Total or almost total absence of hair | For prolonged direct sun exposure, AKC advises sunscreen; some young dogs may need extra skin care if they develop adolescent acne. |
| Coated | Short, flat coat | AKC says occasional brushing is sufficient. |
Beyond coat and size, consider the individual dog’s temperament, the breeder’s health-test documentation and whether your household can provide activity and structured play. Your outdoor routine and sun exposure also matter when considering the hairless variety.
