The Burmilla is an elegant, medium-sized cat known for a silver-based, tipped or shaded coat, vivid green eyes and dark “make-up” markings around the eyes, nose and lips. Breed profiles from the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA) describe Burmillas as affectionate, sociable, inquisitive and playful, but those are tendencies—not guarantees for every individual cat.

What is a Burmilla cat?

The Burmilla is a recognized cat breed with ancestry linked to a Chinchilla Persian and a lilac European Burmese. CFA dates the breed’s beginning to an accidental 1981 mating that produced four shorthaired female kittens. FIFe records acceptance of the breed on January 1, 1995. CFA accepted both longhair and shorthair varieties for registration in 2011 and reports championship status in 2014. Registry terminology and accepted colors can differ, so the current standard of the registry involved is the authority for show classification.

Burmillas are found in shorthaired and longhaired forms. The longhair is generally described as a silky semi-longhair rather than a heavy, fully long coat.

Burmilla appearance and coat

Signature silver coloring

The defining visual effect is a pale, usually silver-white ground color with colored tipping or shading. Because the pigment is concentrated toward the ends of the hairs, the coat can appear to sparkle when the cat moves. Tipping and shading may occur in several colors recognized by a particular registry; consult the applicable standard rather than assuming every color is accepted everywhere. CFA and TICA describe the breed’s characteristic silver-based patterning in their breed information: CFA Burmilla profile and TICA Burmilla profile.

Face, eyes and build

Burmillas have green eyes and a sculptured head set on a muscular but elegant, medium-sized body. Dark lines around the eyes, nose and lips create the breed’s often-mentioned “make-up” look. Individual eye intensity, head shape and the precise description of acceptable markings should be judged against a registry standard, not a photograph or a pet advertisement.

Shorthair and longhair differences

Variety Coat description Routine implication
Shorthair Short coat with the same silver-based tipped or shaded effect Usually straightforward weekly brushing or combing
Longhair Silky semi-longhair; TICA notes feathering beneath the body and on the britches, tail and bib Weekly combing is still the baseline, with extra attention to feathered areas

TICA lists separate Burmilla and Burmilla Longhair standards in its standards index: TICA breed standards index.

Burmilla temperament and behavior

CFA characterizes the breed as combining the outgoing, mischievous qualities associated with the European Burmese and the mellower nature associated with the Chinchilla Persian. TICA describes Burmillas as gentle, affectionate, sociable, inquisitive and playful. In practical terms, many are people-oriented without needing constant attention, alternating active play with periods of rest.

These descriptions are breed tendencies, not a behavioral guarantee. Early socialization, the cat’s genetics and previous experiences, household routine and the quality of introductions all influence the adult animal.

Are Burmilla cats playful?

Yes, official breed profiles describe regular bursts of play and curiosity. Provide interactive toys, opportunities to chase and climb, and short play sessions that let the cat stalk, jump and investigate rather than relying on a single toy left on the floor.

Do Burmilla cats get along with children and other pets?

TICA says Burmillas can get along with children and other animals. Success depends on the individual cat and on gradual, supervised introductions. Give every pet a separate retreat, keep resources such as food and litter boxes accessible without confrontation, and never require a cat to tolerate rough handling.

Exercise, climbing and enrichment

Burmillas are described as good climbers and jumpers. A suitable home setup includes:

  • A stable cat tree or other vertical structure.
  • Secure perches near windows or in quiet rooms.
  • Interactive toys rotated regularly to preserve novelty.
  • Scratching posts that are tall and sturdy enough for a full-body stretch.
  • Daily opportunities for play, adjusted to the cat’s age, health and interest.

Secure windows and balconies before offering elevated access. Vertical territory is enrichment only when it is stable and cannot expose the cat to a fall or escape.

Grooming and routine care

Both CFA and TICA recommend at least weekly brushing or combing, and describe the varieties as generally easy to groom. Use a stainless-steel comb or a small slicker brush, working gently through the coat and paying attention to the longhair’s feathering. Increase checks if the coat tangles, during seasonal shedding or after outdoor exposure.

Weekly and periodic checklist

  • Coat: Brush or comb at least weekly; stop if the cat becomes distressed and resume with shorter, positive sessions.
  • Nails: Trim regularly, taking only the sharp tip.
  • Ears: Inspect and clean only as needed with a method recommended by your veterinarian; redness, odor or discharge warrants an appointment.
  • Teeth: Brush with veterinarian-approved pet toothpaste and introduce the process gradually.
  • Bathing: Usually unnecessary according to CFA, although an occasional bath may improve coat presentation when appropriate.

Health, feeding and veterinary care

CFA and TICA describe Burmillas as generally healthy, while noting that issues seen in related parent breeds can still matter. CFA also points to the breed’s small gene pool and the importance of responsible breeders using genetic screening. These broad descriptions do not establish a complete, universally applicable Burmilla-specific testing protocol.

What to ask about health

Before committing to a kitten, request the parent cats’ veterinary records and any health-screening or genetic-test results relevant to those lines. Ask your veterinarian which examinations and tests are appropriate for the individual cat, then maintain routine preventive care, vaccinations and parasite control. TICA specifically recommends keeping vaccinations and parasite treatments current.

Nutrition

TICA reports no special nutritional requirement beyond good-quality food and fresh, clean water. Choose a complete diet appropriate to the cat’s life stage, monitor body condition and adjust portions with veterinary guidance. A breed label should not replace an assessment of the individual cat’s weight, activity, dental health or medical needs.

How to find a responsible Burmilla breeder

Availability varies by country and registry. CFA suggests contacting cat-show organizers to identify Burmillas and using its Find-A-Breeder resource. TICA offers a Burmilla breeder search and says its directory lists TICA member breeders who have signed its Code of Ethics. Start with the organizations’ current resources: CFA Burmilla information and breeder guidance and TICA Burmilla profile and breeder search.

Documents and questions to request

  • Registration and pedigree documentation, with the issuing registry identified.
  • Veterinary and vaccination records for the kitten.
  • Health-screening information for both parent cats, including the tests actually performed and their dates.
  • An explanation of how kittens are raised and socialized around people and household activities.
  • The age at which kittens go home, along with written care and return policies.

Meet the breeder and observe the cats’ living conditions when possible. A clean environment, transparent records and willingness to discuss limitations are more useful signals than coat color alone. Compare the kitten’s observed temperament with your household rather than assuming every Burmilla will behave identically.

Is a Burmilla right for your household?

A Burmilla may suit people who want an affectionate companion with an elegant coat and enough curiosity to enjoy play, climbing and interaction. Plan for weekly grooming, routine nail, ear and dental care, safe vertical space and a breeder or rescue source that can document the cat’s background. If you need a completely independent, inactive cat or cannot provide gradual introductions and enrichment, another individual cat may be a better match regardless of breed.
