The best Shih Tzu haircut is the one that matches your dog’s coat, face, lifestyle and the amount of brushing you can maintain. Take a photo to your groomer, then agree on four details before the clippers come out: body length, face shape, leg length and how much daily care you are prepared to do. These four looks—puppy clip, long coat with a topknot, teddy-style face and lion-inspired trim—are useful visual starting points, not a ranking.
What haircut should I ask my Shih Tzu’s groomer for?
Start with the look you like, then describe the practical limits. The American Shih Tzu Club says coat type, environment, owner time and activities all affect whether a pet should keep a long coat or have it shaped shorter (American Shih Tzu Club guidance). A reference photograph is especially important because names such as “teddy bear” and “lion cut” do not describe one universally standardized recipe.
- Body length: State the approximate amount of coat you want left, rather than only saying “short.”
- Face: Show whether you want a rounded outline, a visible muzzle, fuller cheeks or a neat, short finish.
- Legs and tail: Ask how much length and shaping will remain on each.
- Upkeep: Tell the groomer how often you can brush, comb and return for professional trims.
- Individual suitability: Ask what the dog’s coat texture, matting, skin and daily activities make realistic.
1. Puppy clip: the practical short trim
A puppy clip is a short, even pet trim. Ask the groomer to leave a specific length that feels manageable for your household and to keep the body, legs and head proportionate. The American Kennel Club describes the puppy clip as a shorter option that makes care easier, particularly when a coat tangles readily or an owner wants less daily grooming.
What to say at the appointment
“Please give my Shih Tzu an even puppy clip, leaving approximately [your preferred length]. Keep the face comfortable and the legs and tail shaped to match. Please tell me what brushing this length still needs.”

Maintenance and trade-offs
AKC says dogs in a puppy clip typically need professional grooming every four to six weeks; that is source guidance, not a schedule that fits every dog. A short cut reduces the amount of coat to work through, but it does not eliminate brushing, bathing or checks for mats. Your groomer can adjust the interval for growth rate, coat texture and how quickly the dog becomes untidy.
2. Long coat with a topknot: the classic flowing look
For a long, elegant style, ask the groomer to retain coat length and gather the hair on top of the head so it stays clear of the eyes. AKC describes the Shih Tzu as having a double coat—a long, silky topcoat over a soft undercoat—and notes that texture varies; many dogs’ coats change around 10 to 12 months of age (AKC coat guide).

What to say at the appointment
“I want to keep the coat long. Please shape the head hair for a secure topknot, keep the eyes unobstructed, and even the ends without taking off more length than necessary. Show me how to maintain it at home.”
Maintenance and trade-offs
This is the highest-maintenance choice here. AKC recommends daily brushing of a long coat with a good-quality wire brush with flexible pins, working in layers so the brush reaches the skin. The mustache and topknot need daily combing, and the topknot should be changed daily (AKC Shih Tzu breed information). Hair on the head should either be cut short or held in a topknot to help prevent irritation; a haircut is not a treatment for an eye disorder. Ask your groomer or veterinarian about bathing frequency for your dog: AKC pages give different long-coat intervals, about every three to four weeks in one guide and every two to three weeks in another, so there is no single universal timetable.

3. Teddy-style face with a shorter body: a rounded, cuddly outline
“Teddy bear” is an informal visual description, not a fixed breed-club specification. Use a photograph and explain exactly which features you want rounded. The groomer may shape the cheeks, muzzle, ears and chin differently depending on the dog’s skull, coat density and eye placement.
What to say at the appointment
“Please make the face look softly rounded like this photo, with [fuller/shorter] cheeks, a [more visible/less visible] muzzle and ears blended into the outline. Keep the body at approximately [length] and tell me how often it will need brushing and trimming.”

Maintenance and trade-offs
A shorter body can make tangles easier to manage while preserving the expressive, rounded face. The exact result still depends on how much coat is left around the eyes and muzzle, so confirm those points before the cut. Bring a second photo if the first does not show the profile or leg length clearly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Lion-inspired trim: dramatic contrast by reference photo
A lion-inspired trim usually means a shorter body with a fuller-looking head and/or tail, creating contrast rather than following a standard Shih Tzu formula. The primary breed and grooming references do not define a standardized Shih Tzu lion cut, so there is no authoritative clipper-guard recipe or guaranteed universal result.

What to say at the appointment
“I would like this lion-inspired contrast: a shorter body, with the head and tail left fuller as shown in the photo. Please recommend lengths that suit my dog’s coat, skin and lifestyle, and explain how the shape will grow out.”
Maintenance and trade-offs
Ask whether the fuller areas will mat more quickly than the body and how often they should be combed. Your groomer may alter the proportions for comfort, coat condition or movement. Do not assume a dramatic trim is needed for summer: Shih Tzus do not tolerate heat well, but AKC’s general summer-grooming advice does not establish that shaving a Shih Tzu is appropriate (AKC summer grooming guidance).
Compare the four looks before you book
| Style | Visual brief | Home-care demand | Best appointment conversation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy clip | Short, even pet trim | Lower than a long coat, but still requires care; AKC typically cites professional grooming every four to six weeks | Specify the length left and proportions |
| Long coat with topknot | Long coat; head hair tied clear of eyes | Highest; daily layered brushing and daily combing/topknot changes | Confirm length, knot technique and daily routine |
| Teddy-style face | Rounded face with a shorter body | Depends on facial and body lengths | Clarify cheeks, muzzle, ears, eyes and body length with photos |
| Lion-inspired trim | Shorter body with fuller head and/or tail | Depends on how much fullness remains | Ask for coat- and lifestyle-appropriate proportions and grow-out expectations |
Coat-care facts that apply to any Shih Tzu haircut
- Shih Tzu coats can mat, and texture may change as a dog matures; inspect behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar and at the tail base.
- Even a short trim needs regular brushing and skin checks. A clip is not a substitute for maintenance.
- Use a flexible-pin wire brush for a long coat and work in layers to the skin, as recommended by AKC (AKC breed information).
- Keep hair around prominent eyes arranged safely. Contact a veterinarian for redness, squinting, discharge or persistent rubbing rather than trying to solve a possible eye problem with scissors.
- Discuss bathing with your groomer or veterinarian because the appropriate interval varies with coat length, skin and lifestyle.
Your groomer-appointment checklist
- Save one or more photos showing the front, side and back of the desired look.
- Write down the body length you want left and whether the legs and tail should match or contrast.
- Describe the face precisely: rounded or defined muzzle, cheek fullness, ear length and eye clearance.
- Tell the groomer how many minutes you can brush or comb on an ordinary day.
- Disclose matting, sensitive skin, previous clipper reactions, heat concerns and activities such as swimming or muddy walks.
- Ask what the cut will look like as it grows out, when to schedule the next visit and which brush or comb technique to use.
Photos plus a frank conversation about maintenance will give your groomer enough information to turn an appealing idea into a comfortable, workable trim for your individual Shih Tzu.
