There is no catfish species established as the universally “best” or reliably compatible choice for a koi pond. Catfish and koi can both disturb bottom sediment, which may cloud the water, and guidance on raising catfish in managed ponds does not establish that they are safe pondmates for koi. Before adding one, identify its species and adult size, consider the safety of small koi, and assess your pond’s water quality, filtration, aeration, and existing fish load.
Can catfish live with koi?
They may coexist in some ponds, but the available extension and husbandry guidance does not establish dependable compatibility between koi and particular catfish species. Anecdotal reports of fish living together are not enough to show that a pairing is safe across ponds or life stages.
“Catfish” covers different species and adult sizes, so a general claim that catfish are peaceful—or that they will attack koi—is not justified. Even advice about a catfish’s hardiness describes its ability to tolerate culture conditions, not its compatibility with koi. The practical decision is specific to the fish and the pond, rather than a simple yes-or-no rule.
What can go wrong?
Sediment can cloud the water
Bottom-dwelling or rooting fish, including catfish and koi, can stir up sediment. Texas A&M AgriLife explains that a clarifying treatment may only help temporarily if the cause of turbidity remains: Texas A&M AgriLife’s guidance on muddy pond water. If clear water is a priority, adding another fish that disturbs the bottom may work against it.

Small koi may face different risks from adults
The evidence available here does not quantify catfish predation on koi or establish which named catfish species might threaten koi fry or juveniles. Do not assume small koi are safe simply because adult koi are larger, or assume every catfish will prey on them. Ask about the exact species, its adult size and feeding behavior before considering a mixed pond.
Channel catfish can be aggressive in tanks
A Kentucky State University aquaponics handbook cautions specifically about channel catfish in tanks: “In tanks they can be aggressive, and injury during feeding may occur from barbs located on the head of the fish.” This is a tank-management warning, not proof that channel catfish—or all catfish—will attack koi in a pond. It is, however, a reason not to treat channel catfish as automatically docile.

More fish add to the pond’s water-quality demands
Mississippi State University Extension identifies dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and nitrite as important catfish-pond water-quality variables that can change rapidly. Adding fish increases the demands on the pond’s capacity to support its stock, so consider existing fish load, filtration, and aeration rather than judging suitability by species alone. A water test kit can help you monitor conditions, but testing cannot make an incompatible fish pairing safe.

- Professional Quality Testing Kit: The AAwipes Aquarium test kit (50 strips) is developed by experts for fish enthusiasts. It offers 8-in-1 testing capabilities, made with high-quality fiber paper and non-bleeding colors. The kit measures key parameters like Free Chlorine, Nitrate, Nitrite, Hardness, Sodium Chloride, Total Alkalinity, pH and Ammonia nitrogen. By identifying potential issues, our fish tank testing kit helps prevent hidden water problems and ensures the safety and well-being of your fish.
- Versatile Use for Freshwater and Ponds: This aquarium water test kit is versatile and suitable for both freshwater and saltwater environments. It can be used in various aquariums, fish tanks, ponds, pools, and shrimp tanks, making it easy to monitor water quality and ensure your filter functions properly. Experts recommend testing your aquarium water at least twice a week to maintain optimal water quality.
- Fast and Accurate Results: Get accurate results in minutes with just 3 steps: 1) Dip the test strip into water for 2 seconds for pads 1-7; dip pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen) separately for 5 seconds. 2) Remove the strip without shaking off excess water. Hold horizontally for 30 seconds for pads 1-7, wait 180 seconds to read Pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen). 3) Compare the colors to the chart for up to 99% accuracy and take necessary action.
- Extended Shelf Life: The test strips are packaged in a well-sealed bottle to ensure they remain effective over time. This protects the strips from moisture and other environmental factors, ensuring you have reliable testing materials on hand when needed.
- Convenient Use: With this kit, you can test your aquarium water at home without the need to send samples to a lab, saving you both time and money. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your aquarium water is balanced and safe without the stress or extra expense.
- Identify the exact species. “Catfish” is not specific enough to assess adult size or husbandry needs. Do not use a general claim about hardiness as evidence of koi compatibility.
- Find out its likely adult size and feeding behavior. Consider whether small koi or koi fry could be vulnerable, and whether the new fish could compete with existing fish for food.
- Assess the pond’s capacity. Account for pond volume, current stocking, filtration, and aeration. Plan to monitor dissolved oxygen and nitrogenous waste variables, including ammonia and nitrite.
- Decide how much sediment disturbance you can accept. If you are trying to maintain clear water, weigh the added bottom disturbance against that goal.
- Check local rules and availability. Confirm that keeping the species is permitted where you live; rules and availability can vary by location.
Why fishing-pond stocking advice does not answer the koi question
Catfish stocking guidance for managed fishing ponds is not a recipe for a koi pond. UF/IFAS provides stocking information for fishing ponds and advises acclimating fish to temperature when stocking, but it does not give a stocking rate for koi and catfish together. Use such advice only for the context it addresses, and do not infer a safe mixed-pond number from it.

Address the source of turbidity before applying a clearing treatment. Texas A&M AgriLife notes that treatment may be temporary when sediment continues to be disturbed. Since both koi and catfish can stir the bottom, adding a catfish is unlikely to help a pond whose main problem is sediment disturbance.
