What Saltwater Fish Has a Chin Barbel?

A chin barbel occurs in several saltwater fish, including the Barbelled Drum, Goatee Blenny and juvenile European whiting. Use range, jaw, fins and body features to narrow an identification.

Several saltwater fish have a chin barbel, so that feature alone cannot identify a fish. A Barbelled Drum has a small, thin barbel at the center of its chin; a Goatee Blenny has a more prominent one about as long as its eye. Juvenile European whiting may also have a small chin barbel, which FishBase says disappears as the fish matures.

Saltwater fish with chin barbels

Fish Chin-barbel description Range or context
Barbelled Drum (Ctenosciaena gracilicirrhus) One small, thin, flexible barbel at the center of the chin; the species profile also describes two pairs of pores beside it. Southwest Gulf of Mexico to southern Brazil. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute profile reports sandy and muddy bottoms at 10–130 m. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute species profile.
Goatee Blenny (Paraclinus barbatus) A prominent barbel about the length of the eye. Greater Caribbean. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute species profile.
European whiting (Merlangius merlangus) A small barbel may be present in juveniles or absent; FishBase says it disappears at maturity. Life stage matters, so the trait alone is not enough to identify a specimen. FishBase species page.
Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) Chin barbel absent. NOAA’s manual gives its range as the Gulf of California to the Gulf of Alaska. NOAA identification manual.

Why the barbel is a clue, not an identification

A chin barbel is a whisker-like appendage, but it is not unique to one saltwater species. Its size and visibility vary: the Barbelled Drum’s is small and central, the Goatee Blenny’s is conspicuous, and a juvenile whiting’s may be tiny or difficult to see. Other fish, including Pacific hake, have no chin barbel.

Identification keys therefore use more than this one feature. NOAA’s Alaska cod-and-hake key compares barbel presence and size with jaw position and other identifying characters. Read NOAA’s Alaska identification key.

How to narrow down a fish with a chin barbel

  1. Note where it was seen. Record the sea or ocean, coast or country, and whether the fish was offshore, on a reef, or over sand or mud. Range and habitat can rule out candidates, but the ranges in a species profile should not be extended beyond what that source reports.
  2. Describe the barbel. Check whether there is one central filament or more than one, and whether it is tiny, flexible, branched, or roughly eye-length. Look for nearby pores as well.
  3. Compare the rest of the fish. Note the jaw’s position, body shape, fins, color, and pattern. NOAA’s key explicitly combines barbel size with jaw and other traits.
  4. Use a clear side-view photo and a regional key. FishBase provides identification resources and filters for marine or brackish waters, territory, taxonomy, and fin counts. Open FishBase’s identification search.

A single chin filament is not a reliable basis for identifying an individual fish: it can be subtle, vary with life stage, and occur in different fish groups. A location and clear photograph make a more useful starting point.
