Yes. Fish contains protein, and salmon is specifically included among finfish in the USDA MyPlate Protein Foods Group. The amount of protein depends on the species, edible portion, and preparation, so there is no single protein figure that applies to every fish or salmon serving.
Does fish count as a protein food?
Yes. USDA MyPlate classifies seafood, including finfish such as salmon, as part of the Protein Foods Group. Its portion framework uses cooked ounce-equivalents: examples include 1 ounce of cooked finfish and 1 ounce of canned fish.

That classification answers the basic question, but “fish” describes many species and forms. A cooked fillet, canned fish, smoked fish, and a raw portion are not interchangeable measurements. Protein content should therefore be checked for the specific species, serving size, and preparation.
Is salmon a good source of protein?
Salmon is a protein-containing food and can contribute to a meal’s protein intake. However, the evidence available here does not establish one universal number of grams per serving or prove that salmon contains more protein than every other fish. Any comparison should use the same edible portion and preparation—for example, cooked salmon versus another cooked fish, or drained canned fish versus drained canned fish.

What else does salmon provide?
Protein and omega-3 fat are separate nutrients. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements reports the following omega-3 amounts for a 3-ounce cooked Atlantic salmon serving:
| Salmon type | DHA | EPA |
|---|---|---|
| Farmed Atlantic | 1.24 g | 0.59 g |
| Wild Atlantic | 1.22 g | 0.35 g |
These figures describe DHA and EPA, not protein. NIH notes that omega-3 content varies by species and can also depend on the fish’s feed. Those differences should not be treated as evidence of differences in protein.

Use the form and portion stated on the label or database
Look for whether the value applies to cooked, raw, canned, or drained fish, then match the stated serving size. MyPlate’s ounce-equivalent approach is a portion-planning system; it is not a universal gram-of-protein value.
Weighing is optional
If you need a consistent cooked portion, a kitchen scale can measure ounces. Most people do not need a scale for ordinary meals, but weighing helps when following a precisely defined nutrition plan.
What this means for pets
This evidence establishes fish and salmon as protein foods in human nutrition guidance. It does not set a protein target for a dog or cat, confirm that a particular fish product is complete and balanced pet food, or replace veterinary advice. Pet diets also require attention to preparation, bones, seasonings, calories, and the animal’s medical needs; those questions cannot be answered from a general human food-group classification alone.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one protein number for all fish: species, portion, and preparation differ.
- Confusing omega-3 data with protein data: DHA and EPA are fats, not grams of protein.
- Comparing unlike servings: cooked, raw, canned, and drained forms should not be ranked against one another without matching conditions.
- Turning a food-group label into a medical plan: MyPlate classification does not determine an individual or pet’s protein requirement.
