Some communities also lure fish to the hole and spear them. The equipment and technique varied by community, place, period, water, and target fish, so there is no single method used by all Inuit people.
The basic process
- Choose and open the ice. Fishers made an opening by cutting or chiseling through the frozen surface. An Inuvialuit artifact record describes tackle used for “jigging through holes chiseled through ice in winter and spring.”
- Work the opening. A lure or hook-and-line rig was lowered into the water. The fisher repeatedly lifted and lowered, or “jigged,” the lure to attract fish.
- Strike with the selected gear. Depending on local practice, the fisher pulled in a fish on the line or struck it with a spear or dart when it approached the opening.
- Bring up and use the catch. Winter fishing supplied fresh food during a season when daylight was short and other resources could be less abundant. The catch formed part of a broader subsistence cycle rather than a separate recreational activity.
Jigging through an ice hole
Carved lures
The Nunalleq Digital Museum describes a carved, fish-shaped lure called an iqsak, jigged through anluat—holes cut in the ice. Its shape and movement imitated prey or signaled food to nearby fish. The terminology and artifact belong to a specific regional tradition and should not be treated as a pan-Inuit standard.
Hook, line, and hand control
Collection records show several ways of handling a line. Smithsonian records describe Inuvialuit rods with baleen lines. A British Museum Inuinnait short rod functioned as a spool for a plaited sinew line; its copper hook was attached to a bear tooth. These compact systems let a fisher manage the line directly at the hole instead of using a modern-style casting rod.
Spearing through the opening
Spearing is the other method specifically described in public-agency and museum accounts. The U.S. National Park Service summarizes winter ice fishing as luring fish to a hole and either spearing them or using a simple hook-and-line jigging system. A spear or dart required the fisher to watch the opening and time a downward strike as a fish came within reach.
#1 Best Overall
- UGLY STIK CARBON ICE 32" SPINNING ROD AND REEL COMBO: Delivers the same trusted Ugly Stik toughness with precision action tailored for ice fishing applications.
- SIZE 5 FISHING REEL: Features a lightweight graphite body and rotor with a machined aluminum spool for strength without adding excess weight. Recovers at the rate of 20"|51cm with every turn of the crank. Gear ratio of 5.2:1.
- Ugly Tech(TM) construction featuring 100% 24-ton graphite for a lightweight and well-balanced rod. The high-density EVA rear-grip offers unmatched durability, while the golf-style fore-grip ensures superior comfort and control.
- 4 TOTAL BEARINGS: 3 ball bearings + 1 roller bearing provide smooth operation. Oil felt front drag system with a max drag of 6lb|2.7kg helps you fight the fish on your terms.
- 5 PVD coated Ugly Tuff(TM) one-piece stainless-steel guides with a smooth hard coating reduces line fray.
Whether spearing was practical depended on local conditions, including the visibility of the water, the opening’s size, and how fish behaved. The available sources do not establish one universal rule for when an Inuit fisher would choose a spear rather than a line.
What tools and materials were used?
| Tool or material | Documented examples | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Ice-hole tools | Cutting or chiseling tools; the Inuvialuit record explicitly refers to holes chiseled through ice | Open access to the water |
| Lures | Carved bone or antler lures; a fish-shaped iqsak in the Nunalleq collection | Attract fish during jigging |
| Hooks | Iron fish hooks in Smithsonian-recorded examples; a copper hook in an Inuinnait short-rod assemblage | Catch fish on a line |
| Lines | Baleen lines, plaited sinew, and, in a later Igloolik example, nylon monofilament | Lower and retrieve the lure or hooked fish |
| Hand reels or short rods | Inuinnait short rod used as a spool; Inuvialuit rod forms | Store and control line beside the hole |
| Spear or dart | Fish spears and darts documented in Arctic contexts | Strike fish visible beneath the opening |
| Raw materials | Wood, walrus ivory, steatite (soapstone), bone, antler, baleen, sinew, iron, copper, and nylon appear in the cited collections | Form the lure, hook, line, rod, or fittings |
Materials changed over time and differed by location. An Igloolik line-and-lure example combines wood, walrus ivory, iron fish hooks, steatite, and nylon monofilament, illustrating why an artifact should be identified by community and date rather than labeled simply “the Inuit fishing tool.”

Regional examples and names
Inuvialuit
Smithsonian records identify Inuvialuit ice-fishing tackle used through holes chiseled in winter and spring ice, including rods, baleen lines, and bone or antler lures with iron hooks.
Inuinnait
The British Museum catalogs an Inuinnait short rod that served as a spool for a sinew line, with a copper hook attached to a bear tooth. This is a documented object from one community, not evidence that every Inuit fisher used the same construction.

Copper Inuit in Coronation Gulf
A Canadian Museum of History film record documents October ice fishing by nets among Copper Inuit in the Coronation Gulf region. This shows that seasonal timing and gear could differ from the hook-and-line and spearing examples.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Inuit ice-fishing tools the same everywhere?
No. “Inuit” covers many communities across a vast Arctic region, and the source record also includes related but distinct Yup’ik and Inupiat traditions. Local waters, fish species, available materials, technology, and historical period all influenced the gear. It is more accurate to say that ice-hole fishing, jigging, and spearing are documented Arctic practices, then attach each tool or description to the community and place where it is recorded.

How this differs from modern ice fishing
The underlying idea of lowering and moving a lure through an ice hole remains recognizable in modern ice fishing. A contemporary ice-fishing jig lure is the closest general product analogue to the carved, hooked lures in museum collections, but modern equipment should not be presented as an Inuit artifact or as proof of current practice in a particular community. Current fishing rules, permissions, and ice safety depend on jurisdiction and date and are not supplied by these historical descriptions.
Quick Recap
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- It documents both active jigging with a line and luring fish for a spear strike.
- It documents varied materials, including bone, antler, ivory, stone, baleen, sinew, metal, and later nylon.
- It shows seasonal variation, including winter and spring jigging and October net fishing in a Copper Inuit record.
- It does not provide a universal Inuit method, catch rate, average ice thickness, or one set of target species for all communities.
