For a typical adult meal, plan on 4 ounces (113 g) of raw edible fish fillet per person. That is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s general adult serving, measured before cooking. It is a weight—not a count of whole fish, whose edible yield varies by species and size.
How much fish should you buy per person?
Use 4 ounces of raw, edible fillet for each adult as a starting point. The FDA says that amount is about the size and thickness of an adult’s palm. For a group, multiply the portion by the number of adult diners:
- One adult: about 4 ounces (113 g)
- Two adults: about 8 ounces (227 g)
- Four adults: about 16 ounces (1 pound, or 454 g)
These amounts assume boneless edible fillets and typical adult portions. Adjust for appetite, side dishes, and whether you want leftovers; the 4-ounce figure is a general serving, not a guarantee that every diner will want exactly that amount. See the FDA/EPA fish advice FAQ.
Raw fillet weight and cooked weight are different
The FDA’s 4-ounce serving is measured before cooking. NOAA lists a 70% cooked yield for fresh or frozen fish fillets, skin-on or skinless, under its standard cooking procedures. That means 4 ounces of raw edible fillet works out to roughly 2.8 ounces cooked; 1 pound raw works out to about 0.70 pound cooked. This is a fillet-to-cooked-weight calculation, not a whole-fish yield estimate. NOAA’s 2024 cooked fish yield standards describe the procedure behind that factor.

How much should children have?
FDA/EPA age-based serving amounts are smaller for younger children:
| Age | Serving amount |
|---|---|
| 1–3 years | 1 ounce |
| 4–7 years | 2 ounces |
| 8–10 years | 3 ounces |
| 11 years and older | 4 ounces |
These are portion amounts, not recommendations to serve fish of any species without considering mercury advice. FDA/EPA guidance groups fish by mercury levels, so consult its current fish and shellfish advice when choosing fish, particularly for children and people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or might become pregnant.

How often is fish recommended?
The FDA/EPA advice describes 2–3 servings of varied cooked fish per week for adults, about 8–12 ounces in total. The FDA also reports the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation of at least 8 ounces weekly on a 2,000-calorie diet. These are weekly recommendations, not a requirement to eat a particular amount at every meal.

There is no reliable universal count. Whole-fish weight includes parts that may not be served as edible meat, and the usable yield depends on the fish’s species, size, and how it is prepared. The 70% NOAA factor applies to edible fillet weight during cooking; it does not tell you how much meat a whole fish will provide.

If buying a whole fish, ask the fishmonger for the dressed edible yield of that species and size, then compare that amount with your planned portions. For fillets, calculate directly from raw edible weight.
Keep seafood safely chilled
FDA advises not leaving seafood unrefrigerated for more than 2 hours, or more than 1 hour when the temperature is above 90°F. For handling and storage details, see FDA’s seafood safety guidance.
