To make a planted betta fish bowl suitable as a permanent home, use “bowl” to mean a covered, heated and filtered aquarium—not a small decorative bowl. Choose an appropriately sized tank, add gentle filtration and a heater, plant it with soft-edged cover, then cycle and test the water before introducing a betta.
Choose an aquarium, not a small decorative bowl
A larger, covered aquarium gives you room for equipment, plants and swimming space, and makes it easier to keep conditions stable. Published size guidance differs, so there is no single figure shared by all the sources:
| Source | Stated size guidance |
|---|---|
| PetMD, care sheet updated April 27, 2026 | At least 2.5 gallons; 5–10 gallons is described as ideal. |
| Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), publication date not stated | At least 20 litres for a single male. |
| Aqueon, publication date not stated | Ideally at least five gallons. |
These are attributed recommendations, not identical standards. Use them to avoid treating a tiny display bowl as equivalent to a suitable aquarium. Plan for a secure lid: PetMD notes that bettas can jump.
Set up the essentials
- A lidded aquarium of suitable volume
- An aquarium heater and thermometer
- A gentle, adjustable filter, such as a low-flow sponge filter
- Freshwater aquarium substrate if you want to anchor plants; PetMD says substrate is optional
- A freshwater aquarium test kit and aquarium water conditioner
Plan plants and hardscape around the fish
Use smooth stones or other hardscape without sharp or rough edges, and leave open swimming space. Plants provide cover, but leaves and decorations should not snag delicate fins. OATA recommends gravel or sand and ideally live plants for cover; PetMD also considers live plants suitable. Aqueon names hornwort and Najas grass as soft plant options in its lifespan guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Those examples are not a complete compatibility list: the cited care guidance does not establish that every aquarium plant is suitable. Choose plants with soft surfaces and shapes, and inspect them for damage or sharp edges. Artificial cover can be an alternative, but apply the same fin-safety check.
Keep the water surface accessible. PetMD notes that bettas regularly breathe air at the surface; OATA advises leaving a gap between the water surface and cover glasses. Position plants and decor so the fish can reach the surface easily.
Rank #2
- HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
- IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
- MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
- CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
- PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.
Install equipment and prepare the water
Keep water warm and verify it
PetMD gives a temperature range of 76–81°F, while Aqueon’s Betta Care Guide gives 76–85°F. Because these published ranges differ, follow a clearly attributed care recommendation and keep conditions stable rather than treating either range as an unqualified universal. OATA says a heater is required to maintain suitable temperature year-round. Use a heater appropriate to the aquarium and check the actual water temperature with a thermometer; do not assume the room or heater setting tells you what the water is doing.
Use filtration without a strong current
OATA describes filtration as essential. PetMD recommends low or adjustable flow and identifies an air-driven sponge filter as an option. Aqueon’s care guide says a filter is beneficial but not strictly necessary. For a planted permanent aquarium, a gentle filter is a practical way to support water quality; adjust the flow so it does not create a strong current.

Condition tap water
If using tap water, treat it with aquarium water conditioner before filling the tank or adding replacement water. PetMD and Aqueon both recommend treating tap water. Aqueon’s tank-setup guide covers setup, while its care guide cautions against changing all the water at once.
Cycle the aquarium and test before adding a betta
Cycling develops beneficial bacteria that help break down fish waste. Do not use clear-looking water or a fixed number of days as proof that the aquarium is ready. PetMD says cycling can take four to six weeks and advises testing during the process.

- Set up the aquarium, substrate, plants, heater and filter, and fill it with conditioned water.
- Run the equipment while the aquarium cycles; follow the instructions for any cycling method you use.
- Use a freshwater aquarium test kit to monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH during cycling, as PetMD advises.
- Wait for test results—not the calendar alone—to guide when the aquarium is ready for a fish. Do not assume a bottled starter product proves readiness by itself.
PetMD’s care sheet does not provide a specific set of target readings in the cited guidance, so use reliable test-kit instructions or qualified aquarium-care advice to interpret your results rather than guessing at a threshold.

PetMD recommends weekly testing and stable water conditions. Keep records of readings so you can spot changes instead of relying on appearance alone. Condition replacement tap water before adding it, and avoid replacing all the water at once.
