The largest tuna can be much longer than a person is tall, but most tuna are not that size. NOAA says an Atlantic bluefin can reach 13 feet long; by comparison, the measured average height of U.S. men age 20 and older is 68.9 inches. NOAA’s western Atlantic guide gives a common bluefin length range of 16 to 79 inches, so the 13-foot fish is an extreme maximum, not a typical example.
How long is a tuna compared with a person?
It depends on the tuna species. “Tuna” refers to several species with different sizes, so there is no single length that represents all tuna.
| Comparison | Length | How it compares with a U.S. adult’s height |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic bluefin tuna, maximum | Up to 13 feet (156 inches), according to NOAA Fisheries’ species profile | About 2.3 times the 68.9-inch measured average height of U.S. men age 20 and older |
| Atlantic bluefin tuna, common range | 16 to 79 inches, according to NOAA’s western Atlantic tuna guide, published approximately 2019 | Ranges from well below to somewhat taller than the 68.9-inch reference |
| Atlantic bigeye tuna, maximum | About 5.5 feet (66 inches), according to NOAA Fisheries’ species profile | Just under the 68.9-inch reference |
The human figures are U.S. reference measurements, not global averages. CDC/NCHS reports measured average heights of 68.9 inches for men and 63.5 inches for women age 20 and older, based on data collected from August 2021 through August 2023. A maximum fish length and a human average height make a useful visual comparison, but they describe different kinds of values.
What does a 13-foot bluefin look like next to a person?
Imagine a 68.9-inch-tall adult man standing beside a fully stretched 13-foot Atlantic bluefin. The fish would be about 2.3 times as long as the man is tall. That is NOAA’s stated maximum length for the species, not a representative everyday bluefin.

For a more grounded comparison, NOAA’s western Atlantic tuna guide lists common bluefin lengths of 16 to 79 inches. The guide does not give a mean for that range, so it would be misleading to call the midpoint or either endpoint an “average” tuna. Its upper end, 79 inches, is about 10 inches longer than the U.S. adult-man height reference.
How big is a bigeye tuna compared with a human?
NOAA says Atlantic bigeye tuna can reach about 5.5 feet, or 66 inches. That is close to, but slightly less than, the 68.9-inch measured average height of U.S. men age 20 and older. It is also a little taller than the 63.5-inch average for U.S. women in the same age group and data period.

How heavy can a tuna get?
Length and weight are separate measures. NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin profile says the species can reach up to 2,000 pounds. NOAA’s western Atlantic guide separately lists an IGFA all-tackle bluefin record of 1,496 pounds; that is a record listing in the guide, not a typical fish and not the same figure as the profile’s stated maximum. Neither number should be compared with a person’s height.
