Do Jack Fish Have Scales? A Species-by-Species Guide

Most jack fish are scaly, but their coverage is species-specific. Crevalle jack has a scaleless chest with a small scale patch, while almaco jack lacks lateral-line scutes.

Yes—most fish called jacks have scales. However, “jack fish” is a broad common name covering several species in the jack family (Carangidae), and their scale coverage differs. A crevalle jack has a distinctive scaleless chest with one small scale patch, while an almaco jack has no scutes (hard, spiny scales) along its lateral line.

What “jack fish” means

“Jack fish” is not one precise species name. It can refer to multiple members of the Carangidae family, including crevalle jack (Caranx hippos) and almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana). Similar-looking species are especially difficult to distinguish as juveniles, so the answer about scales should be tied to a named species rather than generalized to every fish called a jack.

Where the scales are on a crevalle jack

Crevalle jack is scaly over most of its body, but its chest is an important exception. The chest is scaleless except for a small patch of scales immediately in front of the pelvic fins. This patch is a distinctive identification feature: the crevalle jack is described as the only jack in the western Atlantic with that particular patch.

Therefore, a “scaleless chest” does not mean a scaleless fish. It describes a localized area of bare skin on an otherwise scaled fish.

How almaco jack scales differ

Almaco jack is a different species from crevalle jack. Its lateral line has no scutes. Scutes are the harder, spiny scale-like structures that occur along the lateral line of some fishes; their absence does not mean that the almaco jack has no ordinary scales anywhere on its body.

Scale and scute placement can help with identification, but they should be assessed together with body shape, coloration, fin-spine and fin-ray counts, and geographic range.

Are all jack species scaled in the same way?

No universal scale pattern or scale count has been established here for every fish worldwide called a jack. NOAA describes several similar-looking Seriola species, and juveniles can be particularly hard to identify. Scale details are one character among several, not a stand-alone rule.

Why identification can be difficult

A 2022 NOAA study reported that field assignments were at least 91% correct for Seriola fasciata, S. rivoliana, and S. zonata, but only 24% correct for S. dumerili. That difference shows why a fish should not be identified from a single scale feature, especially when it is young or photographed under poor conditions.

Are jack fish hard to scale?

That depends on the species and on what you mean by “scale.” A jack can have normal body scales while lacking scales or scutes in particular areas. The crevalle jack’s bare chest is not evidence that the entire fish is difficult to scale, and the almaco jack’s lack of lateral-line scutes does not indicate a scaleless body. For cleaning or preparation, inspect the whole body rather than assuming one consistent covering pattern.

What scale details are useful for identification?

  • Breast and chest: Check whether the area is scaled, bare, or has a small localized patch.
  • Lateral line: Look for scutes, and note when they are absent.
  • Overall form and color: Compare body profile and markings with a species-level guide.
  • Fins: Fin-spine and fin-ray counts can separate similar species.
  • Range: Geographic distribution can rule out otherwise similar jacks.

Why correct identification matters

Accurate species identification is important for understanding jack biology and managing fisheries. As fishery context, recreational anglers landed 389,000 almaco jack in the Gulf of America and South Atlantic in 2024. That landing figure describes the fishery, not the number or arrangement of scales.
