It depends on the species. NOAA Fisheries lists Atlantic cod at up to 51 inches and 77 pounds, while its Pacific cod summary gives a maximum length of 6 feet. A much larger Atlantic cod—96 kg (211 pounds) and over 180 cm—is cited as a historical report from 1953, not as the same kind of figure as NOAA’s current species summary.
How big do Atlantic and Pacific cod get?
“Cod” can refer to more than one species, so there is no single size limit for all cod. The agency figures below come from separate species summaries and should not be treated as measurements from a standardized comparison.

What is the largest Atlantic cod on record?
A NOAA-hosted archival report cites an Atlantic cod weighing 96 kg (211 pounds) and measuring over 180 cm, attributing the historical report to Bigelow and Schroeder (1953). This older reported record is much larger than NOAA Fisheries’ current quick-facts maximum of 77 pounds; the sources do not explain the difference, so the figures should remain distinct rather than be presented as a reconciled record. How large are Pacific cod according to Canada?
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says Pacific cod can exceed one metre and 20 kg, with an average weight of 2.5–4.5 kg. Those are that agency’s profile figures, not a replacement for NOAA’s separate maximum-length summary of up to 6 feet. Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Pacific Cod

How long do cod live?
