Why human tuna should not be a regular cat food
Tuna intended for people is not formulated to meet a cat’s nutritional needs. VCA says it lacks essential nutrients, while Cornell recommends choosing commercial cat food with a nutritional adequacy statement appropriate to the cat’s life stage. Cats need a balanced supply of nutrients, not just a food they enjoy or a source of protein.
Cornell also warns that some cats consuming canned fish products intended for people have developed potentially serious neurological disorders. That warning does not mean every taste causes harm: the guidance does not specify a dose threshold or the likelihood of harm from a particular exposure. What to feed instead
Make a food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage the dietary staple. Check the package’s nutritional adequacy statement; a canned product marketed for a specialty purpose is not necessarily nutritionally complete. Wet cat food can also contribute dietary moisture, but the label still matters.

- Special diet or supplements: Ask your veterinarian before making changes. Cornell notes that a veterinarian may recommend a recipe developed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist when a home-formulated diet is appropriate.
How much tuna can a cat have?
The reviewed veterinary guidance does not establish a tuna-specific safe portion or feeding frequency. Cornell’s general suggestion that treats usually make up no more than 10–15% of daily calories applies to treats overall; it is not a tuna allowance or proof that tuna is safe within that limit. Because Cornell separately warns about some canned fish products intended for people, do not use that general treat guideline to calculate a tuna serving.
What if your cat already ate tuna?
The guidance does not provide a universal emergency threshold, and it does not establish that a particular amount is harmless. If the exposure was large or repeated, your cat is unwell, your cat is a kitten, or your cat follows a prescribed diet, contact a veterinarian. Share the product type and your best estimate of how much and when your cat ate it. For an otherwise well cat after a small exposure, ask your veterinarian if you are unsure what to do rather than relying on an invented safe-dose rule.

Can tuna water encourage a cat to drink?
Cornell mentions that a small amount of tuna-can water may sometimes be used to flavor water to encourage drinking. This is a limited flavoring suggestion, not a recommendation to feed tuna meat or make tuna water a staple. If you suspect dehydration, contact a veterinarian; Cornell’s hydration guidance advises veterinary help for that concern.
