How Is Plastic Contaminating Our Fish?

Fish can ingest plastic directly or through prey, but a finding in the gut does not prove plastic is in edible muscle or that eating fish poses a health risk.

Fish encounter plastic in aquatic environments and can ingest it directly or through prey. Published studies document plastic ingestion across many marine fish species, but the findings vary by species, habitat, particle size, and measurement method. A plastic particle found in a fish’s stomach does not, by itself, mean its edible flesh contains plastic or that eating the fish poses a proven health risk.

How plastic gets into fish

Discarded plastic breaks into smaller pieces as it weathers in the environment. Fish encounter these particles in the water and through the food web. Some particles are small enough to overlap in size with prey, making them possible food items for fish, including young fish. NOAA describes research on larval fish consuming tiny, prey-sized plastic particles and on fish feeding in deep-pelagic habitats (NOAA on microplastics; NOAA Fisheries on larval fish).

The FDA describes microplastics as particles typically less than 5 millimeters in at least one dimension, but notes that there is no standard definition for microplastics or nanoplastics. That lack of a shared definition is one reason results from different studies can be difficult to compare (FDA: Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Foods).

What studies have found

A 2021 global review by Savoca, McInturf, and Hazen compiled observations from 171,774 individual marine fish representing 555 species. It found published records of plastic ingestion for 386 species, including 210 species of commercial importance; 148 species reviewed had no records of plastic consumption. These are records in the scientific literature, not a census of every fish population or a measure of every fish sold as food (NOAA Institutional Repository: Savoca et al. (2021)).

The same review reported a pooled incidence of 26% across studies that accounted for microplastics. That figure describes the studies included in the review; it is not the chance that any particular fish, meal, or seafood purchase contains plastic. Exposure and reported findings differ with species and life stage, habitat, sampling, particle-size thresholds, and how researchers identify particles.

Regional studies show why scope matters. In a 2023 study of deep-pelagic animals in the Gulf of Mexico, researchers found microplastics in 26% of sampled fish individuals and 29% of sampled crustacean individuals. The mean particle length was 0.59 ± 0.2 millimeters. Those results describe that regional sample, not seafood worldwide (NOAA Institutional Repository: Bos et al. (2023)).

Not every study detects plastic. A 2024 study of 97 reef fish from nine species in the Republic of the Marshall Islands found no plastic larger than 1 millimeter in their gastrointestinal tracts. Its result applies to those fish and that detection threshold; it does not establish that all reef fish are free of smaller particles or that fish elsewhere have the same results. The researchers used multistage screening to reduce false positives, underscoring how identification methods can shape findings (NOAA Fisheries summary of Shaw et al. (2024)).

Does plastic in a fish mean it is in the meat?

No. Many findings concern the gastrointestinal tract—the stomach and intestines—not the edible muscle. A particle reported in gut contents is not evidence by itself that the fish’s flesh contains plastic. The available studies summarized here do not provide a comparable global estimate for how often edible fish muscle contains microplastics.

This distinction also matters for exposure through food. NOAA notes that people generally remove the guts before eating finfish, while people who eat whole soft-bodied shellfish may have a different exposure route. Finding plastic in a fish’s digestive system therefore does not translate directly into a measure of how much plastic a person consumes (NOAA Marine Debris Program: Health).

What is known about harm?

Plastic ingestion is documented in fish, but its effects depend on the particle and the animal; researchers have not established the full consequences for fish populations. NOAA notes that particles with sharp edges can physically damage tissue, while its larval-fish feature says researchers are unsure how harmful ingestion is to larval fish. The presence of plastic alone does not show that a particular fish was injured (NOAA RESTORE Science Program: Microplastics in deep-sea stomachs; NOAA Fisheries on larval fish).

For people, the FDA says current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics and nanoplastics detected in foods pose a human-health risk. The agency also cautions that definitions, reference materials, sample preparation, and quality controls are not standardized, limiting comparisons among studies. This is not proof that every possible exposure is harmless; it is the agency’s assessment of the evidence available (FDA: Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Foods).

Why prevalence claims need context

A percentage from one study cannot be applied automatically to all fish. Before comparing results, check what the researchers sampled and measured:
