Yes. Pike are bony fish. Northern pike (Esox lucius) are ray-finned fish in the broader bony-fish grouping Osteichthyes. Their skeleton is internal; “bony fish” describes their biological classification, not whether bones are visibly obvious from the outside.

Where pike fit in fish classification

The northern pike is classified as Esox lucius, a member of the pike family, Esocidae. Modern taxonomic trees place it through these main ranks:

  1. Osteichthyes: the broad grouping of bony fishes
  2. Actinopterygii: the ray-finned fishes
  3. Teleostei: the large modern teleost fish group
  4. Esociformes: the order containing pikes
  5. Esocidae: the pike family
  6. Esox lucius: northern pike

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service taxonomic tree uses these lower ranks for northern pike, while FishBase also places the family within the deeper bony-fish classification.

What “bony fish” means

Biologists use “bony fish” for fishes in Osteichthyes, whose internal skeleton is primarily made of bone. Ray-finned fishes are one of the living branches within this broader grouping. Pike therefore belong to the same general bony-fish lineage as most familiar freshwater and marine fish.

Why the classification can look different between sources

Taxonomy is hierarchical, so references may show different levels of the same classification. One source may emphasize Osteichthyes, while another starts with Actinopterygii, Teleostei, or Esociformes. These labels are not competing answers to whether pike are bony fish; they describe progressively narrower positions in the hierarchy.

Older literature also used different arrangements for the pike’s higher-level order. Contemporary references such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and FishBase use Esociformes for pike, but historical sources may display another order name.

Are pike cartilaginous fish?

No. Pike are not cartilaginous fish. Cartilaginous fishes, such as sharks and rays, belong to a separate major lineage whose skeleton is made primarily of cartilage. Pike are ray-finned bony fish instead.
