AirTag (2nd generation) is a Bluetooth item finder, not a standalone GPS tracker. It reports a nearby tag through Bluetooth or an approximate location when other Apple devices anonymously relay it through the Find My network. That makes it excellent for misplaced belongings, useful as a backup for luggage and pets, and unsuitable for continuous tracking of people, animals, vehicles or shipments.
Apple introduced the current model on January 26, 2026, at $29 for one or $99 for four in the United States. Apple says its speaker is 50% louder and Precision Finding works at up to 1.5 times the previous generation’s range; those are Apple’s stated comparisons, not guaranteed performance in every building or landscape. Setup requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. Apple’s announcement
How an AirTag actually finds something
When your iPhone is close, Find My can make the tag play a sound and, on compatible iPhones, show directional and distance guidance with Precision Finding. Farther away, nearby Apple devices can detect the Bluetooth signal and anonymously relay an approximate location. If no participating device is nearby, Find My may show only an old location—or none at all.
A map pin is therefore a last-reported or approximate position, not proof that an item is at that exact spot. Walls, metal containers, underground locations, sparse rural coverage, a muffled speaker, a removed tag and a depleted battery can all prevent a useful update.

1. Keys, wallets and everyday essentials
Why it helps
Attach an AirTag to house keys, a purse or backpack, or place one in a wallet. In Find My, select the item, review its location, tap Play Sound when it is nearby, or use Find Nearby when available. Turn on separation alerts where your current Find My software supports them so you can be warned after leaving an item behind.
Attachment and limitation
- Use a key ring or loop for keys and bags.
- Use a slim wallet insert or adhesive holder; the tag is too thick for many card slots by itself.
- Rename it precisely, such as “House Keys” or “Work Bag.”
Find My setup and locating instructions are documented by Apple Support. The tag helps recover an object; it cannot prevent loss or theft.
2. Luggage and travel bags
Why it helps
Put the tag inside a suitcase, where it is less likely to be knocked off, and add a conventional luggage label with your name and contact details. If a bag is delayed or misrouted, its last reported position can give the airline a useful lead. Do not enter a restricted area or retrieve a bag yourself based only on a map.
Sharing a location with an airline
Where a participating airline supports Apple’s Share Item Location feature, you can provide a link to the item’s location, stop sharing it, and have sharing expire automatically after seven days. Apple says it has partnered with more than 50 airlines, but carrier and regional availability varies. This does not replace a baggage claim or airline investigation. Share Item Location instructions

3. Packages, returns and valuable shipments
Where it can help
An AirTag inside a high-value parcel can show whether it reached a destination or was left somewhere unexpected while you personally transport it, hand it to a courier or move it between offices. Lost Mode can display contact information when a finder taps the tag with an NFC-capable phone.
Why it is not shipment tracking
Keep the carrier’s tracking number, scans, insurance and signature records. An AirTag may not update if no Apple device detects it; it can be removed or damaged; and its location is not proof of delivery or theft. A courier or recipient may also receive an unknown-tracker alert. Use carrier procedures and, when appropriate, law enforcement rather than confronting anyone at the displayed location. Apple’s Lost Mode guidance
4. A pet collar: backup only
What it can do
If a dog or cat wanders nearby, an AirTag may help you identify where it was last detected or make the tag sound. It can be a low-cost secondary identifier for a pet that already has a registered microchip, visible ID and a secure collar.
Why it cannot replace a pet tracker
Apple says AirTag is designed for objects, not pets. It has no GPS receiver, cellular connection, live route history, geofence, emergency response or guaranteed updates. A pet in a rural area may move far beyond the reach of participating Apple devices, leaving an old location.

- Choose a lightweight, secure, snag-resistant collar holder.
- Inspect the attachment regularly and keep the tag sealed so the coin cell cannot become accessible.
- Never rely on it instead of a microchip, ID tag, secure collar and a recovery plan.
Apple’s safety information and object-not-pet qualification appear in its battery and safety guidance and the product announcement. A dedicated GPS/cellular pet tracker is the better choice for live location, geofencing or remote-area coverage.
5. Bicycles, scooters, cars and other movable property
Practical placement
Hide the tag in a bicycle frame bag, saddlebag, pannier, helmet or accessory pouch. In a car, use a reachable but concealed console, glovebox or trunk-lining location; keep it away from severe heat, water exposure and impact. A scooter’s removable bag or accessory is often safer than an exposed mount.
Recovery, not prevention
Find My may provide a last detected location after an item moves, but an AirTag is not an alarm. Anti-stalking protections can alert a thief, and a determined person can find and disable the tag. Combine it with a strong lock, registration, visible identification and insurance. Do not confront a suspected thief or attempt an unsafe recovery. Apple’s AirTag feature description
6. Shared household and work equipment
Examples
A shared car key, camera case, musical instrument, stroller, office equipment case or tool kit can remain findable for everyone who legitimately uses it.

Share it correctly
Apple’s current iPhone guide allows up to five borrowers, for six users total per AirTag. Requirements include two-factor authentication, an Apple Account, iCloud Keychain and compatible operating systems.
- Open Find My.
- Tap Items and select the AirTag.
- Tap Add Person under Share This AirTag.
- Select the borrower and send the invitation.
Proper sharing suppresses unwanted-tracking alerts for legitimate borrowers. Simply handing someone an unshared tagged item can cause an unknown-AirTag notification. Apple’s sharing instructions
7. Backpacks, instruments, cameras and sports gear
Two useful Find My modes
For an instrument case left at rehearsal, a camera bag forgotten in a rideshare, a child’s backpack left at school, a tool case on a job site or sports equipment at a stadium, use Play Sound or Precision Finding when nearby. If the item is elsewhere, review its last reported location and enable Lost Mode.
Keep the purpose clear
Track the bag or equipment—not a child, partner or employee. AirTag is an object-recovery tool, not consent-based personal location sharing or a safety device. Choose a holder that cannot easily detach from the specific case or bag.

AirTag or a different tracker?
| Need | AirTag | GPS/cellular tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Misplaced keys or bags | Strong fit | Usually excessive |
| No recurring subscription | Strong fit | Often unavailable or limited |
| Live location, geofencing or route history | No | Generally available, subject to coverage and plan |
| Rural pet tracking | Weak | Usually better |
| Nearby directional finding | Strong on compatible iPhones | Varies |
| Dependence | Nearby Apple devices and Bluetooth | Cellular coverage and battery |
| Android ownership | Poorer fit for ownership and management | Often better |
Android phones can receive unknown-tracker alerts and help identify or disable an AirTag, but full ownership and Find My management remain centered on Apple devices. Google’s Android guidance
Privacy, consent and safe use
- Do not hide an AirTag on a person or use it to monitor a partner, child or employee. Use consent-based location sharing or an appropriate safety product.
- Someone legitimately carrying another person’s unshared tag should receive an unknown-tracker alert. Share the item through Find My instead of disabling safety protections.
- Turning off Bluetooth, Location Services or Airplane Mode on an Android phone does not stop the owner locating the tracker; the tag itself must be disabled. Google explains the process
- Lost Mode contact information should be useful but should not expose unnecessary personal details.
- AirTag has no cited recurring service fee, but holders and replacement batteries cost extra. Use Apple’s resistance specification rather than calling the tag permanently waterproof.
Which AirTag purchase makes sense?
Buy one ($29 in the United States as of January 26, 2026) when you are testing the system or protecting one important item. The four-pack ($99) is practical for several regular targets such as keys, luggage, a backpack and shared equipment. A purpose-built, secure holder is more important than the cheapest accessory, especially for pets, bicycles and luggage. If you need live GPS, geofencing, emergency notifications, movement history or reliable coverage away from populated areas, choose a cellular/GPS tracker and budget for its charging and subscription requirements.
