This is a species-specific behavior—not something to expect from every loach or freshwater fish. For these fish, soft sand can support burrowing while being gentler on their skin and sensory barbels.
Which freshwater fish burrow in sand?
Pangio anguillaris
Loaches Online describes Pangio anguillaris, also called an eel loach or eel kuhli, as an active burrower. Its species account says it lives over sand or silt and spends much of its time buried or foraging along the substrate surface. The account gives its distribution as the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Read the Pangio anguillaris species account.
Brown Eel Kuhli Loach (Pangio cf. anguillaris)
The Brown Eel Kuhli Loach account recommends soft sand because it allows burrowing and helps protect the fish’s delicate skin and sensory barbels. It also notes that these loaches may dig beneath rocks. Common names such as “kuhli” and “eel loach” can refer to closely related or trade-identified Pangio fish, so the scientific name helps distinguish the account’s subject. Read the Brown Eel Kuhli Loach account.
Other eel loaches
Some eel loach species bury themselves with only their faces protruding, according to Practical Fishkeeping. That describes a behavior seen in some species, not a habit shared by every eel loach. Nosing through substrate or foraging along its surface is also not necessarily the same as fully burrowing. Practical Fishkeeping’s guide to kuhli and other eel loaches describes both behaviors.

What substrate should burrowing loaches have?
For the two cited Pangio examples, soft aquarium sand is the clearest choice when you want to support burrowing and avoid rough substrate against delicate skin and barbels. Aqueon gives sand or fine gravel as suitable substrate for most loaches, but emphasizes that habitat and water needs vary by species. Its broad guidance does not mean every loach burrows in sand or has identical care requirements. See Aqueon’s Loaches Care Guide.

How to make an aquarium safer for fish that dig
- Choose a suitable soft substrate. Use soft sand for the cited eel loaches to support burrowing and protect sensitive skin and barbels.
- Secure rocks and other structures. A fish digging underneath an unstable rock can cause it to shift or fall. Set hardscape firmly so it cannot topple if substrate is disturbed.
- Provide appropriate hiding places. Include suitable cover as part of the aquarium setup rather than relying on burrowing alone.
- Check the needs of the exact species. Loaches differ in habitat and water requirements; general advice for the group is not a substitute for species-specific care.
